Book Club
The Avenbury Book Club will meet at the Lodge on June 7th at
10:30 AM to discuss The Summer Before the War by
Helen Simonson. This book is set in the small village of Rye,
England, the summer before the beginning of World War I. It is a subtle romance novel, a look at the manners and morals of life in
Edwardian England, and a character study of the people of the town as the
stark realities of trench warfare and the terrible toll of the Great War
change lives forever. The book for July 5th is The Tuscan Child by Rhys Bowen.
Learn How To Play Pickleball
Thursday, June 7th at 6:30 PM!
Pickleball is a fun game played on half of a tennis court
with a paddle about twice the size of a ping pong paddle
and a hollow plastic ball about the size of a baseball. Each
team has two players. There is much less running than in tennis, and many
people are still playing well into their eighties. We would love to introduce
this game to more of our residents. On Thursday, June 7th at 6:30 PM there will be a good opportunity to learn
how to play pickleball. We will have experienced players teaching how to
play this fun game, including: the basic rules, how to score, how to serve the
ball, and how to volley. Currently, there are three scheduled times each week to play at Avenbury
Lakes:
Tuesdays at 6:30 PM Fridays at 10 AM (ladies only) Saturdays at 10 AM If we can add more players, we will try to add another regular play time to
the above schedule. Balls and paddles are provided, so there is no cost to
you. If you can not make the June 7th event, please come to any of our regu-
lar playdates. New players are always welcome! If there is rain on June 7th, June 14th will be the make-up date at the same
time (6:30 PM)

The Men’s Investment Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 10 AM to
11:30 AM. We talk about the stock market, compare stocks, and buy and sell stocks.
If you have an interest in learning about better investing or have some expertise to
share, you would enjoy this club. A special benefit all members receive this year is a tool called Manifest
Investing that they can use with the club and even with their own portfolios.
If you’re interested in learning more about this club, please call Gene Braden at 440-242-1296 or feel
free to attend any of our meetings as our guest.
The Monday morning Bible Study is Alive and Well! We had a wonderful Guest speaker
last month, Dr. Hugo Gomez, who has connected us with a Health and Educational
Christian Mission in Guatemala. We were able to help the Training Center for Women
by providing a donation of yarn. It is exciting to be connected to a World Mission.
Please join us on Monday mornings at 10:30 AM until Noon, in the Lodge, as we continue the “Study of
Romans” throughout the Summer. Contact Phyllis Barrett with any questions at
440-465-5312. Hope to see you there!

JUNE SUMMER CONCERT
“Like a pint of Guinness in a room full of Miller Light, Jim Gill stands out
among Ohio singer/songwriters.” – Medina Gazette Please join your Avenbury neighbors at 7 PM on Sunday, June 10th at the outdoor pool to
enjoy the rich, mellow sounds of Jim Gill. “His songs, based on life experiences, are sensitive,
funny and musically engaging”. – Tom Fleming – Huntington Wood House Concerts. He plays
both six and twelve string guitar, as well as the harmonica. “Jim Gill brings a bright new voice to the Ohio music scene.…whether he’s delivering hard
hitting tunes about the world around us, or heartfelt personal ballads. He’s a captivating
performer, so don’t miss a chance to see Jim Gill in concert.”—John Soeder, Cleveland Plain
Dealer If the weather does not cooperate, the concert will be moved indoors at the Lodge. Please sign
up in the book at the Lodge, and mark your calendars. Bring your neighbors and your favorite
beverage, if you like, and join us for a great concert. Sponsored by the Avenbury Lakes Commu-
nity Fund, so no charge to attend. Also save the dates Sunday, July 15th and Sunday, August 12th for summer concerts at 7 PM.
The Travel Club will meet on Friday, June 8th at 11 AM in the Lodge Library. We will
review details of our upcoming “Windy City” Chicago – Part II tour for August 27th-30th,
and our mid-week break at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake for October 2nd-4th. Fliers
for the trips are available on the Lodge Bulletin Board table and the Avenbury website.
Remember that all trips are open to your families and friends. Residents and guests
should (1) enroll for the trips with the sponsoring tour companies and (2) add their

She is a regular contributor to the organization’s quarterly newsletter on historic topics ranging from
bootleggers, to tramps, to origins of local street names. Her favorite Avon Lake historic spot is the Avon
Lake Cemetery, which she has been researching for over 16 years, and where she has been giving

Landscape News
Plant Hints We’re all hoping that finally we will have some warm,
sunny weather so we can plant flowers without worries of
a night frost. The grass is a beautiful green color from the
rains we’ve had. The rains have also encouraged weeds in the flower beds
around our homes. Try to pull out the weeds when they are small and not yet
established. If you want to grow some scented flowers, consider Agastoche
‘Blue Boa’, Petunia ‘Rainmaster’, Lavender ‘Big Time Blue’, Phlox ‘Peacock
White’, Dianthus ‘Old Square Eyes’ and Sweet Alyssum ‘Benthamii’. Plant
some Sedum, Purple coneflowers, Joe-Pyeweed, Black-eyed Susan and Zinni-
as. This will help migrating Monarch butterflies in August and September.
Pinch back Chrysanthemums by one inch this month and continue every two
weeks until the end of July to encourage branching and more flowers. If you
have Mugo pines, pinch their candles in half to keep the bush compact. Garden Hints Once our weather stays warm it’s time to plant tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers
and eggplants. After putting down some organic matter and some 5-10-5 or 10
-10-10 fertilizer, plant your seedlings at the same level they grew in pots, late
in the day or on a cloudy morning. Tomatoes are an exception and should be
planted deep without covering the foliage. Thin out seedlings of earlier plant-
ed vegetables to give them room to develop. Newly planted vegetable plants
need up to two inches of water a week if it doesn’t rain.
A compost pile can be developed by using the cut-up plant material, if not dis-
eased, from your plots. Dried leaves, coffee grounds and shredded paper
(black and white only) can also be added to the compost pile. www’SelectSeeds’.com; ‘Gardening in Ohio’ by Denny McKeown; ‘Crockett’s

TICKS AT AVENBURY LAKES
TICKS: Avenbury Lakes is an active adult community with lots of folks
enjoying the outdoors and walking their dogs. Unfortunately, especially this
time of year that means we may come in contact with ticks. Here is some information you can use to minimize your exposure:
Ticks crawl up. They do not fly, jump or drop down from trees.
Ticks attach on lower extremities, shoes or clothing and crawl upwards.
They like to climb under clothing, biting in hard-to-see places.
Pets can be treated with tick repellant, especially those who live outside
and inside.
You can make your own clothing more repellant with available sprays and
lotions.
Stay in the middle of trails avoiding high grasses and leaf litter.
Check your body and your pet’s body for ticks after walking in tick habitat
and remove them right away.
Wear light colored pants so the ticks can be more easily seen.
We share this land with all types of creatures and sometimes we need to take
extra precautions around them. For more information on this topic, visit
www.tickencounter.org.

Community Manager Update
Earth Day Metal Recycling Event: This year we collected 1,695 pounds of metal, diverting items
away from landfills and reducing the need to mine for virgin resources. We also collected $202.04 for
the Community Fund. Thank you to all those who participated, especially Sandra Shumway and
Lenny Evans!!! Start saving now for next year’s event!! Trespassers: If you see unauthorized people on the property, for example in the Wetlands or fishing
at the pond, please contact the Avon Police Department and report it immediately. They will send
an officer out and check ID’s. They get a warning the first time and their name is placed on a list.
Tickets are issued for repeat offenses. Additionally, let us know at the Information Center. Remem-
ber that your guests are welcome to use AL amenities but you must accompany them. Property Inspection notices: For those who received a letter earlier in the year requesting you to re-
move items from common area beds, the time frame is closing. Please remove all common area items
by the end of the month and let us know at the Information Center so we can update your folder. Cambria Suites: If you are hosting summer or Holiday visitors, remember that Cambria offers a
10% discount for Avenbury Lakes residents and their visitors. Make sure you mention Avenbury
when making reservations (440-695-1270). There is also a link on the AvenburyLakes.com website. Brightview News: The 2018 Mow Schedule is posted on the website and on the Bulletin Board at the
Lodge. Feel free to call the Info Center with any questions or complaints. Remember the schedule
is subject to change based on the weather. Pruning will be on going this month. Street Work: Seal Coating will take place on 6/4, 6/5, 6/6 and 6/11. Work will be done on those
streets that were replaced last year, including driveways, and on the Shakespeare walking path.
All those affected will receive flyers with specific instructions the week of 5/28/18. Residents are
asked to avoid seal coated areas for 24 hours. Information will be on the website and available at
the Info Center. Roof Replacements: Per our contractor Final Touch, roof replacements began on 5/29/2018 at the
Northwestern end of Langford and will continue on that street until the entire west side is com-
plete. Roof replacements will continue through the summer moving onto Worthington and most of
Manchester. Residents affected will receive flyers with specific instructions the week before work
begins. Please stay away from work areas while the crews are on the property. Updates will be post-
ed to the website and residents can call the Info Center with any questions or concerns. Thank You: Phyllis Neidhardt has donated a set of Landscaping books to Avenbury Lakes residents.
The books are located at the Info Center in the bookshelf. Feel free to come in and take a look!!
Thank You, Phyllis!!!
If you look to the far left of the picture of the Outdoor Pool Deck Clean-Up Crew, you will notice a
young man, this is Lenny’s son, Logan. Logan has been hired to help out part-time for the summer
around the community by painting mailboxes and assisting Lenny in day-to-day tasks. If you see
him, be sure to say “Hi”.
You never know what type of wildlife you’ll find while
exploring the Avenbury Lakes community!
