Dear Parents and Members of the Carranballac College Community

With only three more weeks before the end of term this is a good time for parents to reflect on how connected they are with the College and their children's learning. Education is a partnership between students, parents and staff and the key to this is the connectedness of parents. Parents who take responsibility for their children's learning and behaviour in partnership with the College stand a far better chance of ensuring their children's educational success. How has your son/daughter been going at school? Do you speak about the highlights of their day at the dinner ta-ble? Why not ask them what they learned that was interesting/new today? Who did they play with at recess/lunch? Did they solve any problems today? Keep a focus on the positives in order to build their resilience. Take the time to speak to your child's teacher if you sense a change or want to pass on a positive message. STAFFING Jamieson Way: Mrs Pell is on Long Service Leave until the end of term. We welcome Mrs Gault into her role and Mrs Pathak into EAL. Miss Hudson will be Team Leader of the 3/4 team. Mr Vasilevski is also on long service leave. Dur-ing his leave Mr Johnson will be taking his class whilst Miss Paten will be Team Leader. I would like to thank and congratulate our staff for the positive manner in which they have capably adapted to their new roles.

PARENTS and FRIENDS:

Congratulations again to our band of volunteer helpers. Although the movie night did not attract large numbers, all who attended commented favourably on what a great night it was. Well done team, thank you also to our staff for supporting and accommodating the event in the BER.

Next up will be the TRIVIA NIGHT. Fun and games for all who join in for a very affordable night out with many priz-es on offer. More information later in the newsletter/calendar. WHAT's ON, WHEN!!??

In semester one we posted the camps schedule for the first two terms under 'students' on the webpage. We apolo-gise for the late posting of semester two activities - they are now up on the web page. As we move over to our new integrated software management system - COMPASS , we will be able to post all College activities for parents and students to view on line. It is hoped to have this available for 2017 in Term 4 this year. We will keep you informed through the newsletter. Have you subscribed to the newsletter on line yet - 300 families have and it guarantees them access to College updates without having to dive into their children's school bags each night and accidentally finding that banana that has been there far too long! ROCK BAND:

A huge thank you to our Rock Band, to Barry and Gaye, to our rocking parents (for their continued support). Rock band performances took place at Jamieson Way on Friday afternoon AND on Sunday at the Saltwater Community Centre. SPORT: Oh what an incredibly amazing and complex job our Physical Education staff, leadership, staff, student leaders and students do in order to provide sport opportunities at the College. Badminton, Soccer, Basketball, Athletics and the list goes on. Last week's Year 7 to 9 athletics at Newport was a celebration of the successful planning and prepara-tion put in by our two key co-ordinators: Mrs Huell and Miss Russell. Well done. Special thanks also to our chefs and young chefs, all pre-service teachers in attendance on the day as well as to all parents who attended in support. ELECTIVES:

Year 9 students will have an opportunity to select subjects from a range of electives in second semester. Mrs Hall has been working with all Specialist staff to develop the curriculum program blurbs from which students will get a content and purpose overview. This is an exciting time for our Year 9 cohort as they prepare for their senior years in Years 10, 11 and 12. If you have any questions please address them to Mrs Hall. I attended another wonderful Athletics Carnival on Friday for our Year 7/8/9 students. I was delighted to witness such high levels of student participation and sportsmanship. I also noted a fabulous connec-tion between our two schools as students competed in a friendly but determined way in each of their events. Congratulations to Carolyn Huell and Yolanda Russell for their organization of this mammoth event. Thanks also to our very supportive staff and Pre Ser-vice Teachers who assisted on this day.

There is a new line of track suit pants now available at PSW; a great addition to our uniform for the cool-er months. Our college is still consulting with our students and families for a choice of outside jack-ets. Compliance to our school uniform each day shows pride and respect for selves and our school community.

Improvement in attendance and punctuality is also noted. Lessons begin promptly at 8.45am every day so being prompt is essential to maximise the learning of all students.

Our students are continuing to make use of the Point Cook oval at lunch times while our school oval is un-der construction. The use of this wonderful facility is made possible by Wyndham Council through weekly application and negotiation from Carolyn Huell.

Keeping our limited school space litter free will en-hance the look of our school and enrich our pride in our school environment. Keep up the good effort please everyone!

Our annual school photo day is this Thursday, with family photos occurring on Friday. A great keepsake as the years fly by.

Well done to all involved in our Years 7-9 Ath-letics last week. We are very proud of our competitors and the attitude and sportsman-ship they displayed. A huge thank you to Ms Russell for her amazing organisation, to all our staff and preservice teachers who sup-ported her and to our wonderful Mr Sullivan for cooking up a storm of sizzling sausages! Our Year 3/4 students are definitely scientists of the future after their learning experiences during their science incursion this week. Curi-osity and engagement increase the level of learning- great job Year 3/4- now we hold high expectations for the work that will be generated from this incursion. Our College Rock Band and our Junior Rock Band performed for all Jamieson Way stu-dents last Friday in our gym. It is truly amaz-ing to see the confidence and personal growth of these talented students, especially our junior band. Congratulations on a great performance! Winter is upon us...... And our lost property area holds many jumpers. Items that are clearly labelled will be returned to your child's classroom. Thank you to those families who make this task easy for us! Reading is a great winter activity - is your child signed up in the Premier's Reading Chal-lenge yet? Consider the amount of time your child is en-gaged in family activities this coming long weekend and consider the amount of time they are 'on screen'. Enjoy the long weekend as a family.

Kids Teaching Kids

Kids Teaching Kids is a program whereby all students at the College

celebrate Science Week each year. Each class invites another class to

attend a workshop, performance or activity which is based around

environmental science.

We celebrate Science Week in Kids Teaching Kids Week from Monday

5 September to Friday 9 September.

The College also hosts the KTK Western Region Conference on site

during that week whereby other schools join us and take part in

workshops. In 2016, Year 7s will assist with organisation at Boardwalk

Campus on Wednesday 7 September and Year 5/6 classes conduct

the second day of that conference at Jamieson Way Campus, on

Thursday 8 September. Finally a selected group of students will repre-

sent us at the Melbourne Water KTK Conference on Monday 24 and

Tuesday 25 October at Melbourne University.

Yr 7-9 Athletics Carnival

On Thursday 2 of June, Carranballac College conducted the Year 7-9 Ath-

letics Carnival. The Carnival was a very successful and fun day. Con-

gratulations to all of the students that attended and well done on your

performances and behaviour through out the day. A huge thank you to

our parent helper Donna Putland and Mr Sullivan/Mr Barnes on providing a sausage sizzle.

Yr 8 Girls Netball

On Tuesday 24 May, the Year 8 Girls Netball team participated in the Hobson Bay Netball Competition.

The girls played incredibly well though out the day and achieved 5th place in the competition. Well done

girls on your outstanding effort.

On Thursday 26 May, the Year 7 Boys Soccer team participated in

the Hobson Bay Soccer Competition. The boys played incredibly well and achieved 3rd place. Congratu-

On Thursday 26 May, 11 students represented Carranballac College in Hobson Bay Division Primary Cross

Country Championships. Despite the horrible weather conditions, the students achieved outstanding re-

sults and participated with enthusiasm. The results are listed below—

Year 9 Badminton

Congratulations to the Year 9 Badminton teams which participated in the Hobsons Bay Division competi-

tion held at the Altona Badminton centre on Friday 20 May. All the students have really demonstrated im-

proved skills, strategies and understanding of the game play through extra practice during lunch time.

An excellent effort by the Year 9 girls team which beat Williamstown High school, Point Cook P-9 College

and Altona Bayside Secondary college to qualify for the grand final against the Laverton College team.

For those who have not registered for the Challenge, it is not too late. Student registrations need to be finalised by the end of this term. To register just fill in consent form available from your campus library and return it to library staff. Student details will be entered and a reading record sheet will be provided.

Participating students please send your reading record sheets to your Library regularly so that your pro-gress can be recorded.

Reading records need to be completed and given to Library staff by Wednesday 31 August to allow time for all data to be entered. The challenge officially ends on Friday September 9.

TRIVIA NIGHT 2016 Term 3: Saturday 27 August

We have an enthusiastic team of parents well into the planning stages for this “back by

popular demand” event. It’s going to be a great night once again and we hope as many of you

as possible can attend. This is a fantastic opportunity to socialise amongst our school com-

munity and show your support for our school. This year the funds raised from this event

will be directed towards the schools playground equipment and in support of other projects

for our kids!

Wow, what a Term. It is hard to believe that it is nearly over. Students have done a fantastic job this term at get-ting to their lessons and working hard. Term 3 is the big Term where concert preparation begins! We start thinking about what we would like to perform and then band practice begins!

If you would like to continue with the Soundhouse program or if you would like your child to start, please head to the school office to pay for Term 3.

Rockband Both rock bands performed at Jamieson Way school last Friday. The whole school danced and sang along to the fabulous repertoire of well known, con-temporary songs. Thanks to the many families who attended and a huge congratulations to Alex Colston-Ing and Barry Davies for their wonderful tui-tion of these young musicians. Nadia and Dylan also performed. They are now in Year 12 at Point Cook Senior but were also members

of Minor Sensation. It's great to see these young adults still performing music in our local community. It was lovely to welcome back Maddie and Carle who were in our rock band last year and also performed at the Saltwater Community Centre gig.

Congratulations to our talented band, Minor Sensation who were the headline act for the fifth birthday celebrations of the Saltwater Community Centre on Sunday. A huge thank you to Barry Davies for his ongoing support and direction with these talented musicians.

Wakakirri

Rehearsals are progressing well for our Wakakirri item which will be performed at the Clocktower Thea-tre, Moonee Ponds on Monday 22 August.

We are currently designing suitable costumes for our cast of 107! A huge job. We are hoping to have some parent support at a working bee on Friday 15 July, 11.30 to 3.00pm. If you are available at any time on this day, please go to the office area at Boardwalk for directions to the Textiles Room. Sewing skills are not necessary, there are cutting and gluing jobs also.

T hey’re Back...

Dear Parents/ Guardians/ Carers

It has come to our attention that some students in the school may have head lice and I seek

your cooperation in checking your child’s hair this week.

Head lice do not transmit infectious diseases – they are transmitted by having head to head

contact with someone who has head lice. You may be reassured to know that head lice are

commonly found in places other than in schools. Head lice are common in school-aged children

and are the most adaptable of creatures. They have survived living solely on humans for 10,000

years!!!!

What can you do?

We seek your cooperation in checking your child’s hair and in those instances where head lice

or eggs are found, treating your child’s hair.

Please see the information at http://www.health.vic.gov.au/headlice/ to help with the detection

and treatment of head lice. Please feel free to talk to me about any problems you are experi-

encing with treatment.

If head lice or eggs are found on your child’s hair you need to inform:

The College and advise when the treatment has started.

Parents or carers of your child’s friends so they too have the opportunity to detect and treat

their children if necessary.

When can my child return to school?

Health regulations requires that where a child has head lice, that child should not return to

school until the day after appropriate treatment has started. Please note, this refers only to

those children who have live head lice and does not refer to head lice eggs.

Carranballac P-9 College is aware that head lice can be a sensitive issue and is committed to

maintaining your confidentiality.

Soundhouse Terms and Conditions over page

TermsandConditions,2016Lessons(heldduringschoolhours)

Soundhouse lessons are held in small groups. The Soundhouse pro-gram runs for 12 months and includes a Term 4 concert. There can also be other performances throughout the year. Soundhouse stu-dents are guaranteed a minimum of 32 lessons per year. However, children will usually receive more than 32 for the year.

Fees are payable IN ADVANCE for the term and there are no re-funds for children who drop out during the term. Fees can be paid in 4 equal instalments of $140.00, each Term, BPay, or directly to the office.

THE FEES ARE NOT CALCULATED PER LESSON.

Withdrawal from the program must be notified via the Soundhouse exit form available from the office. This enables groupings and staff to be organized ahead of any change. Unfortunately, lessons lost due to illness or school activities cannot, in general, be made up. Circum-stances such as long-term holidays or illness etc. can be discussed with The Soundhouse Music Schools coordinator and appropriate ar-rangements can be made.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY WEEK

Monday 20 June - Friday 24 June

We have many excited students who can’t wait to celebrate our ‘CULTURAL DIVERSITY WEEK’. This is taking place in the last week of Term 2 from Monday 20 June – Friday 24 June. The week is devoted to having fun learning about and celebrating the diversity of cultures we have here Carranballac College.

Class levels have begun planning and preparing activities, beginning with their ‘creative door displays’.

Our Foundation/One students are covering China, the Year 2’s Japan, the Year 3/4’s India and the Year

5/6 students are covering Vietnam. Our fabulous students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are presenting a range of

cultural information either as a powerpoint presentation, a poster or maybe they’ve chosen to share a

dance that they’ve learned.

Throughout the week everyone will have the opportunity to be involved in Sumo Wrestling, Bollywood dancing, Cultural games, Henna Hand Designs, Greetings, Indian Rangoli creations, Drum Beat, Japa-nese Dancing, Chinese doll and Dragon making for example. The Choir will be performing, along with our African drums which will be parading around the schools. Fabulous Fun!!

Mr Coffey and Mrs Evans our Japanese Year 2 and F/1 teachers are planning a performance for the families of students in these levels to attend. The students are preparing their invitations and you will be receiving them very shortly.
