tionofFrampton’sD-42styledmodeldubbedTheCamel.ChrisThomas,theMartinliaison,men-tionedhowmuchDannylookedlikethePeterFramptonoftodayandDannymentionedthathisboss(me,BruceMarion)lookedlikehimtoo.Wewereboth somewhat flattered

BeforeEdgarWintergavethesynthesizeramonstrouslead-roleinthesong

“Frankenstein,”andwrotethebikeranthem,“FreeRide,”hetookalittletriptoabigoutdoor concert in 1969. And it changed everything.

WoodstockchangedEdgarWinter’ssenseofpurpose.Beforethatmonumentalconcertchanneledthecreativespiritsofamusicalgeneration,Wintersaidhesimplyenvisionedhismusicasaprivateartwhichheusedtoentertainothers. “IthinkWoodstockreallychangedmylife,”saidWinterinarecentinterviewwithBrevard Live.“Anditmarkedawholedeparture,awholenewmusicaljourneyforme.Uptothen,Ihadbeenmoreofaseriousmusicianandthoughtofmusicassomethingthatwasveryinternalized,myownsortofprivateworld.WhenIplayedWoodstockandsawallthesepeoplewritingandperformingsongsthattheyreallybelievedin,itforcedakindofunitythatmademerealizethatmusiccanbeapositiveforceforchange,reachingouttopeople,communicatingideas.” Renownforhisengagingstageperformance,WinterwillheadlineaconcertthatalsoincludesRickDerringer,Winter’sformerbandmate,onSaturday,August4.Theshowbeginsat7:30pmandtakesplaceattheMelbourneAuditorium.Ticketsrangeinpricefrom$15to$125.Formoreinformationcall321-723-1199 or go to Southernjam.com. NotlongafterhisWoodstock-inspiredepiphany,Winterwrotethethoughtfulballad,“DyingtoLive,”whichappearedof his sophomore album, “White Trash” (1971). “The Woodstockexperiencereallyinspiredmeasawriter,inspired“DyingtoLive,”saidWinter.“IbegantorealizeIcoulddomorewithmusicthanjustentertainandsatisfymyownfeelingsaboutit.Itcouldreallybeabridgetootherpeople.” OverthelastthreedecadesWinter’smusichascowedbycommercialconventionandhasbridgedmusicalgulfs,meldinggospel,blues,funkandrock.Alongtheway,hehas evaded simple classification, probably the cause of hisrelativelyshort-livedcommercialsuccess,continually

reinventinghismusicandhimselfalongtheway.“OneofthethingsthatI’vetriedtodothroughmycareeristobroadenmusicalhorizons,”saidWinter.“I’veneverbeencontentto play or confine my projects to one particular style. And it’sjustbeenanimportantthingtome.I’veneverbeenabletounderstandwhy(some)peoplewholoveclassicalcan’tappreciaterockor(some)peoplewhoareintojazzcan’tdigcountry.I’mprimarilythoughtofasarocker,butIlovejazzandclassicalaswell.” Winter’sphilosophyonmusicalfreedomisperhapsbestreflected in his song, Free Ride.“Free Ridehasalwaysbeenabikerfavorite.IreallyhavealwaysenjoyeddoingthoseshowsandfeltliketheopenroadisreallyaveryAmericanidea,asymboloffreedom.I’vealwaysconsideredmyselfamusicalrebelsoIalwaysthoughtofthatsongasjustembodyingthefreedomtolivelifeonyourownterms.Irelatetoitpersonally.” Ironically,Winter’smostrecentchartsuccesscomesfromanewlyenvisionedversionofthatpivotalsong,Dying to Live.In2003,rapperEminemchoosetousethesongasasampleinthesong,Runnin,whichfeaturesthevocalsofinfamousrappersTupacShakur,NotoriousB.I.G,inadditionto his original vocals. The song was used in the film Tupac Resurrection,whichchronicledthelifeoflatehip-hopstar,andreachednumber5onBillboard’sHotR&B/HipHopsingleschart. “It’sanotherexampleofwhatIloveaboutmusic,”saidWinter.“ThefactthatasongthatIhadrecordedbackinthe70s,whichwasbasicallyclassicallyorientedwithpianoandstringsveryreminiscentofEuropeanchambermusic,withabluesvocal,couldthenbetransformedinauniqueway,withahip-hopbeatcrossingintoanentirelydifferentgenre;thatwasreallylargelyduetoEminemseeingthatpossibilityandIthinkitwasreallyamazingonhisparttohaveheardthatsongandhavegottenitinacompletelydifferentway.The(original)messagewasjustaboutsurvival,oneofthemostbasicsubjectsthatthereis.Ithoughtofitasananti-warsong,having written around Woodstock. Whether you’re fighting for your country or fighting to make it through one more day onthestreets,it‘ssomethingweallhavehadtofaceandcanallunderstand.” Reflecting the careening trek that is his musical career,

probablymyfavoriteofthewholebatch,andasongthatIreallythinktheworldneeds--aworthwhilemessage.” Winterandhisbandarecurrentlypreparingthenewmaterialforfutureliveshows.Asitturnsout,Melbourneconcertgoers may well be among the first of Winter’s fans tothenewsongs.“Iwouldsayby(theMelbourneshow)weshouldbedoingsomeofthesesongs,”hesaid,“probably‘RebelRoad.‘Andofcoursewe’llbedoingeverythingelse,all the way back to my first recording, Entrance. Ellis’ live shows feature extended fretwork filled with melodicandrhythmicexperimentation,inthespiritofjambandslikehisfriendsWidespreadPanicandTheAllmanBrothers. Since first hitting the national scene with his Alligator Records debut, GEORGIA BLUE, in 1988, Ellis hastourednon-stopandcontinuedtoreleaseonecriticallyacclaimedalbumafteranother.Hisstellarguitarwork,alwaysastapleofhisliveshowsandCDs,ismatchedbyhisstrongsongwritingandpowerful,soulfulvocals. Born in Atlanta in 1957, Ellis grew up in southern Florida and first played guitar at age eight. He found the blues throughthebackdooroftheBritishInvasionbandslikeTheYardbirds,TheAnimals,Cream,andTheRollingStones.HeespeciallylovedtheKings–Freddie,B.B.andAlbert–and

spenthoursimmersinghimselfintheirmusic.Hislovefortheblues solidified when he was 14. At a B.B. King performance, Tinsleysatmesmerizedinthefrontrow.WhenB.B.brokeastringonLucille,hechangeditwithoutmissingabeat,andhandedthebrokenstringtoEllis.Aftertheshow,B.B.cameoutandtalkedwithfans,furtherimpressingTinsleywithhiswarmthanddown-to-earthattitude.BynowTinsley’sfatewassealed;hehadtobecomeabluesguitarist.Andyes,hestillhasthatstring. Alreadyanaccomplishedteenagedmusician,EllisleftFlorida and returned to Atlanta in 1975. He soon joined the AlleyCats,agrittybluesbandthatincludedPrestonHubbard(of Fabulous Thunderbirds fame). In 1981, along with veteran bluessingerandharpistChicagoBobNelson,TinsleyformedThe Heartfixers, a group that would become Atlanta’s top-drawingbluesband.Uponhearingtheband’ssecondrelease,Live At The Moonshadow(Landslide),TheWashingtonPostdeclared,“TinsleyEllisisalegitimateguitarhero.”Aftercutting two more Heartfixers albums for Landslide, Cool On It (featuringTinsley’svocaldebut)andTore Up(withvocalsbybluesshouterNappyBrown),Elliswasreadytoheadoutonhisown.EllissentacopyofthemastertapeforhissolodebuttoBruceIglaueratAlligatorRecords.“IhadheardCool On It,”recallsIglauer,“andIwasamazed.Ihadn’theardTinsleybefore,butheplayedliketheguyswithhugeinternationalreputations.Itwasn’tjusthisrawpower;itwashistasteand

maturitythatgottome.Ithadthepowerofrockbutfeltliketheblues.IknewIwantedtohearmoreofthisguy.” Georgia Blue, Tinsley’s first Alligator release, hit an unprepared public by surprise in 1988. Critics and fans quicklyagreedthatanewandoriginalguitarherohademerged.Beforelong,AlligatorarrangedtoreissueCool On ItandTore Up,thusexposingTinsley’sblisteringearliermusicto a growing fan base. Tinsley’s next releases, 1989’s Fanning The Flames, 1992’s Trouble Time, 1994’s Storm Warningand1997’s Fire It Up(producedbythelegendaryTomDowd),solidified Ellis’ reputation as a guitar hero with depth and substance. Thisyearisluckynumber13forTheVansWarpedTourfestivalandthatmakesmetingleallover.Eachyearthere’sathemeandthisoneissuretoleaveanimpression.(Youwon’tactuallyknowwhatitisuntilyougetthere.)TheWarpedTourisprobablyoneofthesafestplacestomoshtoamazingbandsrangingfromoldschoolpunkrockerslikeBadReligionandPennywisetothefunkadelicup-in-comingartist,K-OS.ThereasontheWarpedTourisusuallysafemoshinggroundsisbecauseamidthe“anarchy,”thereseemstobeabasicrespectforhuman-kindinthepunkrockcommunity.Often,abandwillhaltitsperformancealtogetherifthecrowdgetstoooutofcontrol.Thisissomethingparentsshouldconsideriftheyarealittleuneasyaboutsendingthereyoungteenofftothisalldayfestival.

group’slatestdisk,“Redeemer,”combinespotentmelodyandblisteringmetaltocreateauniqueandoverpoweringcombination. Theshowwillbeparticularlyspecialsincethewomenwill for the first time unveil their album, “Pretend Not to Notice,”whichwasproducedbyBrettHestla(DarkNewDay,Virgos Merlot, Creed). “This will be the first show we play whenwewillactuallyhavethenewCDwithus,”saidfrontwoman,Longo.“We’resoexcitedaboutit.” ConcertgoerswillhavetheopportunitytopurchaseaCDandt-shirtpackageforjust$10.“TheCDhas12songssothat’snotsuchabaddeal,”saidLongo. A lot of that stuff definitely stuck.” Shebang’slastgigattheMetro,afewmonthsago,wastheband’sregionalliveperformancedebut.“Whenweplayed (Melbourne) last time, it was our first venture out of Orlando,”saidLongo,whosevocalshavebeencomparedtothoseofPattiSmith.“Wewereexitedaboutthewayeverythingwent.Theroomwasprettyfullandalotofthepeoplethatcame,cameviamyspace.Alotofpeopleheardourmusiconmyspaceandcametotheshow.Weseemedtogetareallypositivereception.AndI’mhopingallthosepeoplewillcomebacktoseeusandmaybebringafriendortwo.We’rehopingtogrowthefollowinginMelbourne.” Gaininggroundquick,Shebangalsoreceivedexposureduringthe2007GuitarGalsBattle.“Wedidn’twinbutwewere thrilled that we got to the finals,” said Longo. “It was agreatwayforalotofpeopletobeexposedtoourmusic.Itreallyhelpedusalot.Theyhadseveraldifferentcategories,indie,punk,jazz,pop,competingineachcategory.Fromalloverthecountry.Allofitwasbasedonvotesandwegotintothe finals in the indie/alternative genre.” TakingintoconsiderationLongo’slong-timeinfatuationwiththeguitar,it’sappropriatethatShebangwouldberecognizedinaguitar-playingcontest.“Theroaroftheloudguitars is the first attraction for me,” she said. “To me there’s nothinglikeaLesPaulthroughaMarshalcrankedupwiththerightamountofcrunchonit.Andthentobeabletowritememorablesongsistheotherattraction.Andtheattitudeistheotherthingthatwouldgoinwithit.Rockhasalwaysbeenaboutrebellion.” Rebellion,ormarketingforthatmatter,however,had

Chandelier”.WhenyouwalkintoLou’syouimmediatelynoticetwothings:thegreatmusicandtheeclecticdécor.

Oneofthehighlightsofthatdécor,inmyopinion,istheimpressiveBrazierChandelier.Iwouldn’tventuretocounthowmanybrasareslungoverthefixture, but I’d have to say its well over 50. TheotheruniquethingaboutLou’sBlues is the stage. It’s a sort of floating stagethathangsjustbelowthe2ndfloor. The positing makes it easy for peopleoneitherleveltoviewtheband.Lou’sisnotonlyknownforgoodmusic,

theyalsohaveareputationforgoodfood.They’verecentlyupdatedtheirmenu,whichnowincludestheVan Riper’s Platterwithcoconutshrimp,friesandBarb’shomemadePinaColadaSauce;theDave Fiester Feast(photo)withcoconutshrimp,shrimpcocktail,grouper fingers, conch fritters and fries; andSon of A Sailorwithshrimpwrapandslicedavocadoandothergreatbarfoodpatronshavecometoexpectovertheyears. Itwasn’tuntilrecentlythatthenewownersdecidedtheyneededabitofachangetoperkthingsup.ThispastFebruaryRickGrossman,oneoftheformerownersofIchabod’s,cameinastheGeneralManagerandbroughtaslewofideaswithhim. “Wearenottryingtochangetheclientele,we’rejusttryingtointegrateit,”Ricksaid,addingthattherearemoreupdatesandchangesinstoreforthefuture. MydiningfriendandIhaddinneroutsideintheRiverBar.Thewateriscloseandyou’reableto watch the fi sh jump, porpoises feed and pelicans dive.TheyalsohaveliveentertainmentonFridayandSaturdaynights. Besideswonderfulsushi-creationsbyexperiencedchefs,theSiamOrchidoffersatastyarrayofThaifood.Mydinner-guest-itwasEroica-ordered“PadThai”,thefamousThaidish,withchicken.Itwasdelicatelyspicedandleftawonder-ful fl avor in our mouths. One of my favorite Thai meals is “Basil Duck”. It’s like a fi rework of fl avors. The only problem I’veeverencounteredatSiamOrchidischoosingbetweenallthosewonderfuldishesonthemenu. ChatchaiandArpornNakornpraiopenedtherestauranton Nasa Blvd. in Melbourne fi ve years ago. In October 2006 theyopenedasecondlocationonA1AinCocoaBeach.ThisrestaurantincludesafullliquorbarandsalsadancingeveryFridayandSaturday.Banquetsroomsarealsoavailable.

“Wehadtotraininthepark”,saidRandyBeck,chiefinstructorofSandDriftAikidoMartialArtsCenter.For35yearsthemartialartofAikidohadbeenpracticedandtaughtbyDr.H.T.WalkerSenseiinthebuildingheownedinDowntownTitusville.“Doc”began

his study of the art in 1962 and was one of the key figures in theexpansionofAikidoinBrevardCountyandtheeasternUnitedStates.Hepassedawayin2003andsoonafterBeckwastoldthebuildingwastobesoldandtheschoolwouldhavetobeclosed. “Wehadnoplacetogo,”Becksaid,“Sowehadourclassesinthepark.”Eventually,thisgroupofdedicatedstudents was invited to train at Karate Quest in Titusville. “Mr. Quest was very generous but we needed at place of our own.” SandDriftAikidoDocRyuDojonowoperatesoutofa modern 3,800 sq. ft. facility near S.R. 520 and I 95 in the centralpartofthecounty.Itisownedbyagroupofthestudents.ThepropertywaspurchasedinOctober,2005andthemembersspentayearturningitintothestateoftheartfacilityitistoday.

Thenewdojooffersitspractitioners2,200sq.ft.airconditionedtrainingspace.Therearebathroomsandshowersinthemen’sandwomen’sdressingroomandaloungeandoffice space. The building holds the memories and traditions oftheyearsthatprecededit.“OurmembersworkedveryhardtobeabletocontinuethetraditionofpresentingAikidototheresidentsofBrevardCounty,”Becksaid,“We’reproudofwhatwe’veaccomplished.” SandDriftAikidohasadultclassesscheduledthroughouttheweekandchildren’sclassesonWednesdayandSaturday.InstructionandtrainingfocusonfundamentalandadvancedAikidoinbothtraditionalandstreetselfdefensevariations.Aikidoisaperfectmartialartforbothmenandwomen.Itdoesnotrelyonstrength.Itusesbalance,centeringandmovementtocontrolaggression.Thepracticeofthisartgivesits students a way to relieve stress, stay physically fit, and promotesgrowthanddevelopmentofthemind,bodyandspirit. BorninSanAngelo,Texas,shemovedtoSatelliteBeachin 1961 when her father became the chief operating

pilotforNASAoperationsatthestartofthespaceprogram.Becausesciencewassuchabigthinginthefamily,artwasnotstressedwhileRothrockwasgrowingup. Injuniorhighshewasthedesigneroftheyearbook,andinhighschoolshewastheeditoroftheyearbook.Thesetasksawakenedherloveofdesign.Still,lifeintervenedandshedidn’tpursueartisticinterestsforanumberofyears. Instead,shewasbusyearningadegreeinpsychology.AftershereceivedherdegreefromtheUniversityofWestFlorida,RothrockmovedbacktoSatelliteBeachandworked first for Big Brothers and Big Sisters as a social worker,andthenwenttoworkforthecounty.Partofherjobwastohelpwomenwhohadachildortwo.Shetookthemfrompublicassistancetoemployment.Meanttohelpothers,Rothrockwasnextaskedtoopenawomen’shealthclinicinShreveport,Louisiana.Shestruggledwiththedecisiontomovesinceshelovedtheoceansomuch,butshedidmakethemove. WhileinShreveport,life’sgranddesigncametogethertomakeartpossible.CentenaryCollegewaslocatedbehindthehealthclinic.ShemetBruceAllen,theheadoftheartdepartmentwhospecializesinprintmakingandsculpture.Hesuggestedsheauditartclasses.Shedidandshe’sbeenproducingbeautifulpaintingseversince. ShestartedwithapaintingofEudoraWelty,whichledtoaseriesofportraits.Thatwasthebeginning,buteventuallyshefoundrealismtootedious.Shewantedtobefreer,sosheexperimentedwithhandprinting(sometimesknownas“squishart”)andmovedtowardexpressingherselfinmoreimpressionisticandabstractstyles.Inthosedays,sheusedacrylicpaintonbrownpaperandinsteadofrollingthepaintwithaglassorroller,sheusedherhands.LandlockedinShreveport,shehadfoundawaytorecreatethebeautyanddepthoftheskyandtheoceanshemissed. Allenworkedwithheratthattimeandsuggestedsheuseheavywatercolorpaper.Shecompletedninesquares(onefooteach)andshowedthemtoAllenforcritique.Heaskedhertogivehim144squares,allinblueandwhite.Thosepaintingsweredisplayedinconjunctrionwithagroupperformingadanceperformancepiece.Thatwasthestart.Thosepieces,whichwereoriginallycreatedinbluesandthenlaterinpurpleandinblack,begantosell.Theywereonpaperandframedunderglass. RothrockreturnedtoSatelliteBeachacoupleofyearsago.Aftersurgeryforbreastcancer,shedecidedtostayinthefamilyhomeinSatelliteBeachduringchemotherapy.Shesaysthatherpaintingwasverytherapeuticthroughouthertreatment.Itcalmedher,reducedstress,andevenloweredherbloodpressure.Doctorswereamazedandencouragedhertocontinue.Nowinremission,sheisthankfulshehadandhasherart.

Rothrockadmitsthatherillnesshashelpedtokeepherprioritiesstraight.Paintingispersonal.Shelikestocreatesometensionandmysterythroughherpaintings.Aboveallelse,sheknowsshemuststaytruetowhatshewantstodo.Shedescribesherartasfreernowwithjustenoughtensiontoplayabitwithyourbrain. Duringherrecovery,shetookaclassfromFritsvanEedenattheReneeFoosanerEducationCenter,MuseumSchool.Whenshesawhimpressinggesso,sheconnectedwithhimimmediately.Inthatclass,shelearnedalotaboutstylistic,classicalpainting.ShecreditsvanEedenwithhelpinghermakethetransitionfrompapertocanvasandwithencouraginghertouselargercanvasses.Shefeelsliberatedtohaveherartworkoutfromunderglass. AlthoughshehastakenclassesfromvanEeden,shesaysthattherearemarkeddifferencesintheirapproaches.Shesaidthatthemaindifferencebetweentheirmethodsisthatheknowswhattheendproductwillbewhenhestartsapainting.Sheoftentakestheapproachofaprocessartist—shedoesn’tknowandoftendoesn’twanttoknowwheresheisgoingwithapiece. Now,whensheworkswiththesquisharttechnique,shepreparesbyjumpinginthehottubtowetlargepiecesofwatercolorpaper,andthenshebeginshermagic.Inadditiontothisunusualtechnique,Rothrockchoosesunusualsurfaces.Forexample,shehaspaintedboxesandmadethemintocubepaintings,andshehascreatedawonderfulpiecebypaintingonwoodslatsandliningthemuponawalltomakeonepainting.Now,sheisexperimentingwithwovenpieceswhereshecutsherpaintingsintolongstripsandreworksthemintonewandinterestingpaintings.Theresultisbeautiful. Asherpaintingprogressed,Rothrockdecidedtoopenherowngallery.It’scalledHighwayGrrlsGalleryandStudioandisat1414HighlandAvenueinEauGallie.HerworkisalsoattheFoosanerMuseumSchoolGiftShop.RothrockhasasecondgallerycalledHighwayGrrlsWest.ItislocatedindowntownShreveportat327MarketStreet.OtherworksofhersarecurrentlyshownatBellaFrescaRestaurantandatWestEdgeArtists’Co-opinShreveport.RothrockspendsmostofhertimeinFlorida,butshegoestoShreveporteverythreemonthsforthreeweeks. It’softenfunnythethingsthatcometomindwhenyouthinkofsomeone,

thingsthatjustpopintoyourheadwhenyouleastexpectit.

Forexample,Iwassittingwatch-ingavideoofDaveFiester.SomeonewaskindenoughtosendittomeandIwatchitoften.SomanythingsrunthroughmymindasIsitandwatchDaveplay,andIwonderandaskques-tionsaboutthingsthatIwillneverknowtheanswersto.AndothertimesthingscometomindthatIjusthavetoaskmy-self,whereintheworlddidthatcomefrom?

ThevideoIhappenedtobewatch-ingwasavideooftheHenryPaulBandandDavewasplayingasoloandjusttearingitup.Thatwasnothingdifferentorunusual,itwasjustDave.Butwhat

seemedtocatchmyattentionandstirmycuriositywhilewatchingthevideowas,“whyhasn’thebrokenastring?”(thiswasavideoofaliveconcert).BackintheearlydaysDaveneverseemedtomakeitthroughanentiresetwithoutbreakingastringonhisguitar,anditwasalwaysextremelyfrustrat-ingforhim,rushingaroundtryingtoreplacethebrokenstring(hopinghehadanextraoneoftherightgauge)whilecontinuingtotrytoplay,whichofcourseatsomepointwouldbecome

impossible.Thatmeanthavingtotuneupwhiletherestofthebandcontinuedplaying,notsomethingmostguitaristscaredtodosinceeveryoneintheaudi-encecouldhear.Thiswasatimewhenwehadnoideathatthetechnologyofmusiccouldeverbecomemoread-vancedthanitwasatthattime,especial-lytotheextentithas.Theydidn’thavetheguitartunersoftodaythatjustplugintotheguitarandalittlelightcomesontoletyouknowyourstringsaretuned,allwhileyoursoundisturneddownsoasnottobeheard).Insteadtheguitaristwouldhavetostandthereandtunebyear,pitchpipe,orboth,whichtooklon-gerandcouldhaveaprettynastysoundtoit,andyouhadtokeepyourvolumetohearwhetherornotyouwereintune.Inevernoticedthatitwasabigdealtotheaudience,butitwasoneoftheworstthingsthatcouldhappentoDaveatthattime,beingrightuptherewithhittingareallybadnote.Hewouldalwaysaskme,“whydoesn’tJohn(Lane)everbreakastring”andthensmile.Theanswerwassimple,Johnplayedbasswithstringsasthickaspianostrings,buthedidactuallymanagetoloseacouplewhileplaying.Sillyasitmaysound,thatmemoryreallysticksinmymindandIhavetosmilewhenIthinkaboutit,andoneofthethingsIsup-poseIwillneverknow,butIhavetowonderis,howdidDaveplayallnightlonginlateryears,withallhisguitarstringsintactwhenitwastimetoplaythatlastnoteofthenight?It

wasn’tforlackofplayingjustashardandgivingthosestringsagoodworkout.

Peoplehavesuchvariedthingstheyenjoyrememberingofothers.LarryThorne(knownas“Sparky”tohisfriendsoranyonewhowishestocallhimthat)hasjustreturnedtotheareaafterbeinggoneforatime,andhasmanymemoriesofDaveandthetimeshesharedplayingwithhim.ItseemstomakeSparkyhappytorememberpracticeswithDaveandBillHoffmanduringtheearlyincarnationoftheband“TightShoes”.TheywouldsitaroundBill’sstereolisteningtosongssuchas“DixieChicken”,“OhAtlanta”,aswellas“PackItUp”and“I’llBeDoggone”,twosongsDavewouldbecomeknownfor. The fi rst song I ever associated with Daveandstilldotothisdayis“KeytotheHighway”(alsoveryappropriateasweweretravelingalloverthesouth-eastin“SmilingSideways”and“FreshSqueezed”).Thatwasalongtimeago,anduntilIrequestedDavetoplayitformeonenightattheCorvetteLoungewhereheandMarkGlissonweredoingaduo,ithadbeenalongtimesincehehadplayedit.Buthewasmorethanhappytogobackintimemusicallyto

asongheobviouslyalsoenjoyed.Thesmilehegotonhisfacesaiditall.WhenDavestartedtoplayandsingitwasthesameformeasithadbeen30yearsbefore,butevenmorespecialduetothefactthatthedaysofhearinghimdoitmosteverynightwereinthepast.

IspokeofLarry“Sparky”Thornebefore. I met him during the first “Me-morialConcertforDaveFiester”(oneofthemusicianswhoplayedinhonorofDave).HehadplayedinnumerousbandswithDave,andtheycalledeachotherfriends.Ihavespentthelast2yearsgettingtoknowLarryviaemailuntilhisrecentreturntoBrevard.

LarrywasintroducedtoDavebySteveBlandwhobecamewellknownin“TheFantasticGroup”,butmovedontootherbandswhichmadeaprettybignameforthemselves,like“TheTasmanians”and“NewDaysAhead”.Stevewasleaving“NewDaysAhead”justas“FreshSqueezed”wasdisman-tling (1975) and Dave was looking to putanothergrouptogether.SoinstantlyLarry(onguitar),SteveBland(key-boards)andDavebecame“Stockyard”,alongwithRandyDixonbassandRonBarfield on drums. They found them-selvesalittleplaceinMerrittIslandcalled“TheCorkClub”,anditwastheretheyplayed,practicedandgottheirbandtogetheruntiltheywerereadytocomeoutintheopen.Andatthisparticular time, the first place you went wasstraighttotheSatelliteBeachMo-tel,“PillowTalkLounge”,andasLarryputsit,“theworldofTomBurkhead”.IalwaysthoughtofTomastheguywhokneweverybuttontopushtomakeDavewanttogiveupplayingratherthanplaythere,butofcoursethatwasn’tgoingtohappen.SoDaveadjusted,andwealwaysmadesuretherewasatleastonepersonthatcouldstepinbetweenthematanygiventime.“PillowTalk”wasneverknownasaneasygigtoplay(butyeteverybandinBrevardstoodinlinetogetin).Thebandplayed7daysaweekwayintotheearlymorninghours, until everyone finally left, or the bandcouldn’ttakeitanymore(“LadiesNight”hadtobetheworst).6hourlong

setsduringtheweekand6½onFridayandSaturdaynights.Igottoexperiencethisclubfromeveryaspect,someonetheretoheartheband,goingwiththebassplayeroftheband(JohnLane),andbestofall,mycareerasacocktailwaitressat“PillowTalk”wheremostofthepeoplewereunderage,spenttheirallowanceondrinks,andIworkedfortips.Notoneofmybettermemories,norLarry’s.Butthereweretimeswhenitseemedworthit,likegettingthecrowdtoclapandgetTomtocomeuponstageat2:00amandsing“ThereAreNoFighterPilotsDownInHell”(TomBurkhead obviously an ex-fighter pilot).

ThenextsixyearsorsoLarryspentplayinginbandswithDave.Thereweredifferentbands,differentplayers,buttheyseemedtoremainthesamepeople,justindifferentordersandtimes,eachgoingfrombandtoband.Butwhatalineupofplayersitwas,includingBillBall,DaveVickers,MichaelWright,BillHinson,AustinPettit,RandyDix,Ron Barfield, Ron Taylor, Jimmy Os-wald,andsomanyothers.

Buttherewasonebandinparticularthatwasdifferent,consistingofDave,Larry,andBillHoffman.TherewasnokeyboardplayersoLarryboughta piano and filled in until they found someonetheywerehappywith.Asforabassplayer,Davesuggestedaguyhe,JohnLaneandBillhadmetandbecomefriendswithwhileplayinginNorthCarolinain“SmilingSideways”.Hewasandremainsagreatbassplayer,

soulfulsinger,andapersonwhoisajoyineverywaytoplaywithandtoknow.HisnameisHarveyArnold,whowouldbecomethebassplayerfor“TheOutlaws”.

Shortlyafter,BillandDavewouldleavetobecomemembersof“TheHenryPaulBand”,andDaveVickersandLarryform“TheWoodenNickelBand”.

LarrymovedtoTallahasseeplay-inginanalloriginalsongsjazz-rockbandcalled“Labamba”.Thememberschanged and became “The Muffin Men”,playingmoreofarockformat.

LarryreceivedaninvitationtoplayatadiveresortonthetinyislandofBonaire,asisterislandofArubaandended up staying for 9 years, diving and playingmusic.Whiletherehewasabletorecordandrelease2cds(withreleasepartiesstretchingfromtheCaribbeantoTallahasseeandback).HethenreturnedtoAmericalivinginPanamaCitywherehewrotehisnovel“TheCarnivalNeverEnds”.IamproudtosaythatIhaveasignedcopy.

AndnowheisbackinBrevard,hasanewgroupknownas“TightSqueezed”(acombinationofthe2bandsheplayedinwithDave,“TightShoes”and“FreshSqueezed”),whorecentlyplayedatthetributeforDaveandBillyVanRiper,andIpersonallyhopehedecidestostaythistimearound.
