This is my tribute to all the hot teach-ers out there. Teachers are an amaz-

ing mix of intelligence, ambition, re-sponsibility, adventure, energy and fun. in my experience- this delicious combi-nation very often adds up to a healthy dose of stay-after-school-sexy. recently the state has been putting the screws to these bodacious book worms in the form of budget cuts and salary shrinkage, but their spirit cannot be broken, and i have to applaud them for that. So here’s to you, you sultry shapers and molders of minds! You deserve that happy hour margarita on Friday after-noon…and i’m happy to be the guy to buy you one. That being said, my column would not be complete without a story about my own personal experience with one of your kind.

As with at least half the girls i date- i met Cindy at one of my gigs. i was playing with the 5th Avenue Onlys back then. One of my favorite things about playing out live is that from behind the microphone, while everyone is watching you, you have a perfect view of every-one else. That’s right…we’re watching you just as much as you are watching us. Scanning the crowd, my radar picked up on a cute little blonde with almond shaped brown eyes hanging out near the back and no matter where else i looked, my eyes kept finding their way back to her. i thought about making a run at her, but it looked like she had a date so i did nothing. A week later i was playing another venue and sometime during the second set i saw her again, once again sitting near the back. i took it as a sign and made my approach and the end of the evening found me playing guitar Hero

and drinking beer with her and her roommate. Who among us hasn’t embarked on one of these late night chess matches? Wondering who’s going to make the first move?…if you’re even allowed to make a move at all? Sometimes the unspoken attraction and understanding is so ob-vious that everything just flows. Other times you spend the entire night waiting for a signal…anything that resembles a cue to take action, only to look at the clock and realize it’s 4am and nothing is going to happen. That was me. Hours of sitting on her couch looking for some kind of opening. Finally i had to give up and call it a night. Beaten by a lack of com-munication i started to drag my tired self home. Suddenly, a light bulb popped. The increasingly Orwell-ian, tech-nologically enhanced world we live in has delivered an amazing device for use in the dating scheme…texting! in a flash I realized texting was the perfect tool for the job at hand. Texting holds a certain level of anonymity that let’s you say things a little more directly and if it doesn’t fly you can play it off as if you were just kidding. On my ride home i texted Cindy and waited for a response- “i waited all night for an opening and nothing:)”, very important to include the smiley face icon. This simple little symbol is your insurance policy incase your plans goes south. if your bluntness is taken with disapproval the smiley face says you were just kidding anyway. “You were? Damn it! i’m terrible at flirting!”, was her first response. She took the bait and was using texting to say things she may have been too shy to say face to face. i returned with “Maybe next time

i’ll be more aggressive and just drag you off to your room - lol!”, once again using text speech to keep it light just incase. (lol is text speech for laugh out loud) “Yeah, you probably should!”, likE A CHArM! it was that easy, i’m not making this up! Now i knew that the pretense was over. She liked me, i liked her and we both knew it. The very next time i saw her i knew things would be a lot different…and they were.

Cindy turned out to be a pretty great girl and a lot of fun to be with. Funny, smart, sexy and adventurous. Teachers i’m telling you! We had a lot of really great times together, but in the end i had to break it off with her. The devil was mov-ing back to town and we had decided to give it another go. it was probably a bad move but i was in love with the devil and she had an unholy power over me. Cindy

and i weren’t serious, but i did regret my decision in the months to come. We kept a low level of contact for awhile but she eventually met someone else and moved on. There was actually a few times that she brought her new boy to my shows and tried to use me to make him jealous. i was surprised by her actions, but it made me think that maybe i hurt her more than i thought and considered it my right-fully deserved penance. in truth i wish her all the best. i only wish i would have played things a bit smarter for my-self, but then again i’ve been making bad decisions about women my entire life - why change now?

So once again, glasses up to all you titillating tutors out there!…educating our youth and making my pants fit just a little tighter. And if any of you catch me around town doing something i should be punished for…well you know:).

The year was 1969. Peace was the slogan in an anti-Vietnam War America. And this

band had the nerve to name themselves War.

Founder and singer/keyboardist lonnie Jordan claimed that the band’s goal was to spread a message of brotherhood and harmony, using instruments and voices to speak out against racism, hunger, gangs, crimes, and turf wars, and promote hope and the spirit of brotherhood. Eric Burdon & War began playing live shows to audiences throughout Southern California before entering into the studio to re-cord their debut album Eric Burdon Declares “War”. The album’s key track, the erotic, spaced-out, Latin-flavored “Spill the Wine”, was a hit and launched the band’s career. Burdon and War toured extensively across Europe and the United States, garnering rave reviews from mainstream and music press alike. England’s New Musical Express called War “the best live band I ever saw” after their first Uk gig in london’s Hyde Park. Musicians on both sides of the ocean were buzzing about this new band. A second Burdon and War album, a two-disc set, The Black-Man’s Burdon, was released in 1970, before an exhausted and

volatile Burdon left the band in the middle of its European tour. Already starting to assert themselves, War finished the tour without him and returned to record the next album. War, the funk band from California, is known for the hit songs “low rider”, “Spill the Wine” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends?”. They are a musical crossover band which fused elements of rock, funk, jazz, latin music, r&B, and reggae. The band also transcended racial and cultural bar-riers with a multi-ethnic line-up. The band has sold over 50 million records to date. Although War’s lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe. The music has been sampled and recorded by many singers and groups, ranging from r&B/pop singers such as Janet Jackson to nu metal band korn and hip-hop groups like TlC. The only original member in War’s current lineup is lonnie Jordan (keyboards). The other members are Sal-vador rodriguez drums/vocals; Fernando Harkless saxo-phone/vocals; Marcos reyes percussion; Stuart Ziff lead guitar/vocals; Francisco “Pancho” Tomaselli bass guitar/vocals; Mitch kashmar harmonica/vocals. in forty years, War has recorded 23 albums, the latest in 2008 called Greatest Hits Live.

The Drowsy Chaperone

Cinco de MayoCinco de Mayo (Spanish for

“Fifth of May”) is a regional holiday in Mexico, primarily cel-ebrated in the state of Puebla, with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico. The holi-day commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leader-ship of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. In Florida, we celebrate any holiday we know, so where’s the Tequila?

The Drowsy Chaperone debuted in 1998 at The rivoli in Toronto and

opened on Broadway on May 1, 2006. The show won the Tony Award for Best Book and Best Score and has had major productions in Toronto, los An-geles, New York, london, and Japan, as well as two North American tours. The Drowsy Chaperone is an homage to American musicals of the Jazz Age examining the effect musicals have on the fans who adore them. The Man in Chair, a mousy Broad-way fanatic, seeking to cure his “non-specific sadness” listens to a recording of the fictional 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. As he listens to this rare recording he is transported into the musical. The characters appear in his dingy apartment and it is trans-formed into a glorious Broadway set with seashell footlights, sparkling fur-niture, painted backdrops, and over the top costumes.

On golden Pond, winner of Broad-way Drama guild’s Best Play

Award, written by Ernest Thompson, recipient of a golden globe Award, Writers guild Award and an Academy Award for his screen adaptation is con-sidered by many to be his best. This fun and exciting production of a time-less, romantic tale differs considerably from the movie and is being presented by special permission from Dramatist Play Services, inc. returning to their summer cabin, Norman and Ethel struggle to maintain a relationship with daughter Chelsea, Billy ray Sr., Billy ray Jr. and old fam-ily friend Charlie. The family strives to keep old traditions alive while build-ing new relationships, picking berries, singing songs and just plain having fun! The whole family will love this classic story of renewal and hope!

Sean Carney Band

Cinco de Mayo

Earl’s Hideaway in Sebastian has been the place to be on Sundays

for blues fans. You can enjoy a lazy afternoon outside overlooking the beautiful indian river and listen to the finest talent in today’s traveling blues world. The Sean Carney Band is one of those great bands that will stop at Earl’s this month. The Sean Carney Band has been around the block. These blues veter-ans are actually just coming back from a European “live Blues On Whyte” tour that took them to Spain, germany, Belgium, Hungary and France. They also won the 2007 international Blues Challenge, held in February in Mem-phis, Tennessee. The iBC is presented by The Blues Foundation, who also awarded 34 year-old Carney the Albert king Best guitarist Award and Best Dressed in their 23rd annual competi-tion, before an audience of 1,700 blues lovers from all over the world. in his early twenties, Carney’s passion for the blues extended beyond the stage as he bolstered the scene in his hometown, organizing concerts featuring the likes of Jimmy With-erspoon and Charles Brown, writing blues-related articles, co-hosting a radio program, organizing fundrais-ers for ailing artists and serving three terms as President of The Columbus Blues Alliance. Blues revue Magazine calls Sean Carney “a one-man ambassador for the blues who plays a mean hollowed-bodied guitar, too.”

kelly richey has been described as “Stevie ray Vaughan trapped

in a woman’s body with Janis Joplin screaming to get out.” What a great appraisal for the lexington, kentucky native who’s been based in Cincinnati for many years. richey has often been compared to such greats as Jimi Hen-drix and Stevie ray Vaughan because of her ability to capture and entertain an audience with ripping guitar leads that both sing and astonish. A working musician since her teens, she began her professional ca-reer as a member of the Arista records group Stealin’ Horses; in 1990 she formed The kelly richey Band, with whom she has become both a national and international touring artist. One of kelly’s most cherished mo-ments as a guitarist came in 1988 when she found herself on stage with the legendary Albert king at his sold-out show in Nashville. invited to join him for one song, king told richey, “That guitar is like a gun: if you pick it up, you better mean to use it.” And use it she did, playing the remainder of the set with the late blues legend. in 1993 she was playing a benefit in Louis-ville where another of her idols, lon-nie Mack, saw her perform. impressed with her strong performance, he in-vited richey to join him on stage, and together they brought the house down with their dueling guitar leads. Since establishing her own label, Sweet lucy records, richey has re-leased 11 albums and a live DVD.

The Blues Brothersare putting the band back together

In the movie, The Blues Brothers, Jake and El-wood Blues are on a mission from God to put

“the band back together.” So, instead of all the trouble they had to go through to find the origi-nal players, why didn’t they just grab some other, more available musicians to put on the show? Simple answer: The SOUND! Yes, it’s a fact that the combination of certain musicians creates a unique sound. This month two blues broth-ers will put a band back together that has just that - an incredible sound and dynamic. These blues brothers are Big Bill Morganfield and Steve Thorpe.

For blues fans the name Morganfield should ring a bell. Remember McKinley Morganfield? Yes, we are talking about the legendary Muddy Waters. Big Bill is his son! Big Bill didn’t grow up behind the stage, surrounded by musicians. Born 1956 in Chicago, he was raised by his grandmother in South Florida. As a matter of fact, he didn’t even pick up a guitar until after Muddy Water’s death. “i knew my father wanted one of his children to follow his footsteps, so i bought myself a guitar and started playing. i had the idea to do a tribute to him,” Big Bill said. By then he was living in Atlanta, gA, working as a teacher while learning to play traditional blues. He became stagestruck after performing with lonnie Mack on Atlan-ta’s Center Stage before a crowd of a thousand people. Bill decided to work even harder on his music, honing his skills and learning to write songs.

Around that time, they think it was in 1998, Big Bill Morganfield and Steve Thorpe met for the first time. “It was at the Sebastian Beach inn. i had my second gig outside of Atlanta and the Steve Thorpe Band was playing with me,” remembered Big Bill in an interview with Brevard live. They became friends that night. Steve: “We like the same music and have similar influences. It’s like being brothers from other mothers.” And Bill agreed: “We have this soul connection and it shows in our music. Besides that he’s a great guy, straight from the heart. He really cares.” Bill explained that while both like the same music, each of them takes a different approach. “i’m more traditional in the way i play the blues,” he said, “but Steve has a little rock’n’roll in him. Together it’s like Muddy Waters meeting Stevie ray Vaughan, and that’s quite an intriguing combina-tion.”

Bill: “Up to that time i was kind of a local artist in At-lanta and i was ready to hit the road.” The Steve Thorpe Band became one of his two bands that traveled with him performing in different parts in the United States. The band consisted of “Buzzi” Mekins on bass, kenny Clarke on key-board, and Tom Bayes on drums - all top notch musicians, well known in our area. in 1999 Big Bill’s debut recording, Rising Son, was cut in Chicago, where his father recorded many classic sides. The album was produced by Muddy’s long time guitarist, Bob Margolin, who also played on the record. Three oth-er former members of the Muddy Waters Blues Band also joined Bill in the studio: Willie “Big Eyes” Smith on drums, Paul Oscher on harmonica and Pinetop Perkins on piano. Bill said of the sessions, “it was so inspiring playing with these musicians. Working with them in the studio was a spe-

This photo was taken last year at Lou’s Blues when this band-formation performed for the first time: Warren Kocur on harp (left), Nathan Thorpe on bass (center) and Big Bill Morganfield playing slide guitar (right). This year’s drummer will be Alex Petrowski.

cial experience. They really brought out the best in me; those sessions left me with memories i’ll never forget.” A year later, Bill won the W.C. Handy Award for “Best New Blues Artist,” the equivalent of a grammy Award in the blues world. Bill returned to Chicago in 2001 to record his second release, Ramblin’ Mind on Blind Pig records. Bill’s new-est CD, Born Lover, will be the first recording released on “Black Shuck records”, founded by Big Bill, and is scheduled for release in June through the VizzTone label group. He promised to have some advanced copies at his shows in our area which he will sign for his fans. Big Bill is looking forward to perform at lou’s Blues again. it was about a year ago that he and Steve came to-gether on stage one more time for what was supposed to be a “last Waltz.” This time they added the hot harp of Warren kocur and the funky bass of Nathan Thorpe. The sound was magical. Nobody could believe that it should end - not even the musicians. “Well, we got the band back together,’ said Steve and everyone involved is looking forward to it. The musicians have received the new material from Born Lover and you can expect to hear some brand-new songs along with tra-ditional blues. Bill Morganfield, who once earned his living being a teacher, is now a musician and entrepreneur. He is the CEO of his newly founded “Black Shuck records”, a la-bel that will produce his own but also other artists’ re-cordings. And Big Bill is well connected. He’s got Blues in the Blood, as his 2003 release on Blind Pig records promised. “i like to be a little bridge between people, fostering one’s talent and giving a helping hand,” said Bill about his new recording plans. “it brings me even closer to the music and it is good for my heart and soul.” Are there any plans of recording Brevard based blues-man Steve Thorpe? Big Bill started to laugh about my question. “Steve is quite a good producer himself. Maybe he can show me a couple of tricks.” So for now, the only way you’ll experience Muddy Waters meeting Stevie ray Vaughan, is live at lou’s Blues in indialantic and at Earl’s Hideaway in Sebastian. A unique sound that comes together every once in a while because of the friendship of two blues brothers. “By the way,” said Bill at the end of the interview, “i am the better looking brother!”

Chances are you’re a huge fan of guitarist les Dudek but

don’t even know it. While front-men and women get the center-stage spotlight, song-writers like Dudek are the guys left in the shadows with little more than a linear note mention. And some-times they don’t even get that. les Dudek is a “musician’s mu-sician” who has influenced the history of rock’n’roll. Besides his writing skills he’s playing a powerful guitar.

Dudek, who will perform Satur-day, May 30th at the Sebastian Beach inn, has toured, recorded and written songs with the best of the best includ-ing: Stevie Nicks, Steve Miller, Dave Mason, Cher, Boz Scaggs, and the Allman Brothers Band, among oth-ers. in addition to writing two FM ra-

dio hits of his own, “City Magic” and “Old Judge Jones,” Dudek is credited with helping to write two songs with Stevie Nicks, “Sister Honey” (rock A little) and “Freestyle,” which appears on his own album of the same name. Dudek also played with Steve Miller on his Fly Like an Eagle album and even co-wrote “Sacrifice,” which ap-pears on Miller’s Book of Dreams re-lease. And if you like the guitar work heard on the Allman Brothers songs, “ramblin’ Man” and “Jessica,” you should know that a good bit of the gui-tar work you hear is coming straight from Dudek’s hands. According to Dudek, he helped Dickey Betts finish the song “Jessica” one night when the two men were hav-ing dinner in Macon, georgia. “i wrote the bridge section that goes to g.,” he said. Dickey was stumped. “He had the rhythm part to the verse and the lead part to the verse, but that’s all he had. Then i showed him the part that goes to g. He goes to that part twice.

Those are the two main parts of the tune, the first part and what I would call the chorus part or the relief. “He got so excited about it that we actually threw the acoustic guitars in the back of the truck and ran around town playing it for everyone,” he said. “Then we cut the song. it took us six days to do it.” - The sad part is that Dudek never received any credit for this song. Throughout the ‘90’s Dudek toured the U.S. and Europe. les also released a rock ‘n blues album titled Deeper Shades Of Blues and Freestyle 2002 (E Flat Productions). Addition-ally, les wrote and performed instru-mental library music for television. This music can be heard on NBC, ABC, ESPN, FOX SPOrTS and E channel. These instrumentals are fea-tured on such programs as “Friends”, “Extra”, “Wild On”, “Search Party”, and “Access Hollywood”.

I remember the first time I played live like it was 30 seconds ago. There used to be a small coffee house in

Satellite Beach called Java the Hut. Cute name right? I had a few firsts there actually. My first mocha latte, my first cigar, my first recording session, the owner’s son was a friend and we would jam there early in the day when the doors were closed and tape ourselves through the PA-system, and of course my very first ever live performance.

Sunday night at the Hut was open mic night. i was so nervous i almost chickened out like three times. Even though i was only going to play a few songs to a handful of people, it felt like a big show. i was scared, but i knew if i was ever going to become the performer i wanted to be, I had to take this very important first step. At that moment Duane Soumi, Java the Hut’s owner, gave me the two piec-es of advice that i’ve taken with me to every performance since. Firstly he told me to keep the talking to a minimum. He said people don’t want to hear you babble on and on, just play your song. The second thing he said, and this one is a real pearl, is that you are lucky if people remember you even five minutes after they walk out the door…so just have fun. i wouldn’t be the musician i am today had it not been for open mic nights and the helpful guidance of the more ex-perienced players that run them. Open mics are the birthing centers of our future performers and the proving grounds for vets to try out new material. Open mics are essential to the development of our musical world and a culture all to itself, so i thought it might a good time to take a tour through a few of the better ones in our area. i couldn’t take you to all of them, and there are a lot of really good ones i had to leave out, but i’ve chosen some of my favorites. To guide us on this excursion i enlisted the help of Pete Spoth, a local up and comer and no stranger to free-for-all jams and no-money-gigs. it’s called “paying your dues” and Pete’s working hard to fill his account. it’s a slow night at the bar and amateur players with more heart than the ‘72 Dolphins are psyching up to show their stuff, so let’s you, me and Mr. Open Mic Night go for a ride. There’s no cover tonight, but if anyone gives you a hassle…you know what to say: i’m with the band!

Monday night at the Ultra lounge in Cocoa Village. There is a lot of confusion tonight because the normal PA-system has suddenly become unavailable, but the very cute, very likeable hostess has quickly found another and the night starts on time. The Spothinator takes the floor and the crowd immediately responds to his boyish, good guy, i’m young but probably a little smarter than you charisma. Everyone

While Pete is playing, one of the drunkest guys i’ve ever seen walks over to me and starts drinking my beer. i turn to the tender and tell her i need another and to please put it on drunky’s tab. McDrunkguy says “it‘s cool. But can I have a hug first?”. Um..Ok, I guess I’m secure enough to hug a man. Mid embrace he asks for a kiss…i’m not THAT secure. This, apparently, is his cue to take his shirt off and dance his way through the front door out to the street. What just happened?

Tuesday night i meet Pete in Suntree at the getaway martini bar. The getaway is a posh little nook owned and run by another Pete. Classy atmosphere and well designed martinis have made this place a local favorite. On the way to the bathroom be sure to check out the wall of framed celebs…most of which the owner personally knows. Eight-thirty is the official kick-off time and we get there just as it starts. There is one guy on before the Spothman, so i order a Jack on the rocks and find a seat. I recognize the player on-stage to be Andy Cartmell, local player and all around good guy. it’s worth noting that before he’s done Andy whips out the hottest solo version of Springsteen’s “Born To run” i’ve ever witnessed. it’s Pete’s turn and he immediately jumps into a mixed set of new classics and eighties hits. The list is short as there are quite a few players tonight and they are trying hard to get everybody up. He does well, even though i can tell he doesn’t think so by the look on his face. No worries, we still have another stop tonight. i pay my bill and we are out the door. Our next stop is the Dog’n’Bone, but on the way we stop for a quick beer (well…i do anyway. Pete is underage) at Ashley’s in rockledge where the boys from On Hiatus have a standing Tuesday nite gig. Back on the job we walk into the D and B and watch Matt Sams (the host) lead his band, and a couple jammers, through a tasty sweep of twelve bar. Pete checks in and after about thirty minutes he’s up doing his thing. His set is a change up to more classic rock, not leaving out his signa-ture “commercial breaks” and the crowd is quickly under his spell. The Dog’n’Bones’s open mic is packed with ex-cellent head-cutters waiting for their turn to spit, but Sams does a pretty good job of mixing it up and thinking outside the “blues” box.

Wednesday night takes us to the Chili Pepper in Cocoa Beach. This place is beach hip and the patrons fit right into the décor. The lighting system and stage set-up are phenom-enal for such a small place…for most places really. There are a lot of players waiting tonight and it takes about an hour for Pete’s turn. Once again the Spothitron2000 lures

the crowd in with his sneaky innocence. The last place tonight is the Sandbar, also in Cocoa Beach, just a bit north on A1A. Ahhh… Sandbar. How i love you and your beautifully tanned clientele…Nick the bar-tender’s hurricanes, Dan the bouncer’s witty charm, open air, stumble-able beach access. it really is my second home sometimes. Pete plays all my favorites and everything goes over very well. This is his audience and they love him here. I order a fish taco (they’re the best!) and kick back with some more Jack. it’s been a long week, but it’s not over yet. We still have one more thing to do before we the tour comes to an end.

Thursday night at Smokey Bones restaurant in West Melbourne. Now Bones doesn’t actually have an open mic night, but I thought it would be nice for the Spothster to fin-ish out the week with his very own solo gig in a venue that’s not even a venue. Wednesday night is “flip night” here. What that means is that while Pete is churning out two sets of cov-er song glory to the pulled pork patrons, i get to “gamble” for my whiskey by calling heads or tails to a flipped coin every time i order a drink. if i win i get my drink for free. if i lose i pay for it…simple as that. it’s fun! At the end of two sets the Spothasaurus wants to quit, but the crowd just grew with the advent of about twenty F.i.T. students and they plead for an encore. A tip cup is being passed, requests are being called and shots are going down like draino - this is a real gig and all eyes are on Pete. When it’s over, the management asks him to return next week - this time for pay. it’s a good night for him and i can’t help but feel some pride for the boy. He’s worked hard and tonight he gradu-ated to the next level. Mister-Open-Mic-Night just became Mister-Scored-a-Paying-gig.

in every musician’s life there comes a point when you decide what sort of musician you will be. Will you be the kind that is a hobby purest and plays at home only? There isn’t anything wrong with that. Music should be for yourself first. Music is the lubrication that greases the wheels of life. it can soothe the soul and bring you peace when nothing else can. It has to be personal first or it’s pointless. Many people stop right there and enjoy it for what it is in a smaller way. On the flip-side though, there are those of us who feel the overwhelming compulsion to share and express what music means to us with anyone who is willing to listen. This is not an easy task to accomplish. There are skills to learn and experience to accrue. it’s a long, hard road and it takes a good deal of ambition and dedication, but it’s worth it. And when you’re ready to take that step- you need somewhere to start: Open mic night.

Spring is in the air at Forever Florida. The 4700 acre eco-ranch and wildlife conservation area is

in full bloom showing the beauty and diversity of Florida’s Wilderness. in celebration of the season, Florida EcoSafaris is offering a special discount on the new Zipline Safari saving Florida residents $20 per person on this unique eco-adventure. The offer is valid all month until May 31, 2009.

The two and a half hour Zipline Safari takes guests on an amazing treetop adventure through the canopy of Forev-er Florida. Along the way, they experience seven ziplines, nine aerial observation platforms and two skybridges all passing through some of Forever Florida’s beautifully pre-served ecosystems. One of the most popular zipline seg-ments, “Slough run”, takes guests through a type of for-ested wetland. Spring brings renewed life to the experience as the bald cypress trees in the slough emerge from their dormant winter state into a beautifully vibrant green. it’s a springtime sensation as thrill-seekers step off the platform, 55 feet up in the air and “zip” down high tension cables through this beautiful area reaching speeds up to 25 miles per hour! it’s also the perfect time of year for an adventure through Forever Florida on horseback. As the Spring rains replenish the water table, Bull Creek is bursting back to life providing an exciting point of interest on the Horseback Safari. led by an expert “cowhunter” guide, guests pass directly through the flowing waters of Bull Creek as they travel through seven of the wildlife conservation area’s di-

verse ecosystems. According to the lead cowhunter, Miss Frankie, “The hard part is figuring out who has more fun crossing through the water, the riders or the horses!” guests wanting to kick back and relax on the two hour Coach Sa-fari also get to experience Bull Creek as they stretch their legs along a winding boardwalk under the cool shade of 500 year old cypress trees. Following the attraction’s re-launch in January, thou-sands of visitors to Florida EcoSafaris have had the chance to experience real eco-tourism in Central Florida. Best of all, 30% of the revenues from the different safaris are do-nated to the conservation effort. Whether guests choose the thrill of the Zipline Safari, the adventure of the Horseback Safari or the comfortable relaxation of the Coach Safari, they’re helping to preserve and protect Florida in its most natural state. The beauty of springtime at Forever Florida may just be Mother Nature’s way of saying thanks. Tickets for the new Zipline Safari are $85 for Adults and children ages 10 and up who meet the minimum weight requirement of 70 lbs. Florida residents save $20 off that price from until May 31, 2009. One, two and three-hour Horseback Safaris are available for $40, $60, and $80 re-spectively. The two-hour Coach Safari is $28 for adults and $22 for children ages 6 to 12 with no charge for children 5 and under. Florida EcoSafaris is located at 4755 N. kenansville rd in St. Cloud, Florida, one hour southeast of Orlando. Take US 192 to Holopaw, then south on Sr441 for 7.5 miles. Advance reservations are required and can be made by call-ing toll free, 866-85-4EVEr. For additional information, visit www.FloridaEcoSafaris.com.

How To Fix EverythingPart 2

By Chuck Van Riper

The Column

1. The War on Drugs - Ok, let’s look at some other inter-esting facts: The AMA, in a 2001 study, listed the following causes of death, listed in order from most to least:Tobacco 435,000, Alcohol 85,000, Toxic Agents 55,000, Ad-verse reactions to Prescription Drugs 32,000, Suicide 30,622, incidents involving Firearms 29,000, Motor Vehicle Crashes 26,347, Homicide 20,308, Sexual Behaviors 20,000, All illicit Drug Use, Direct and indirect 17,000, Non-Steroidal Anti-in-flammatory Drugs Such As Aspirin 7,600, Marijuana 0. it cost a little over $100 a day to incarcerate a criminal. Police arrested an estimated 872,720 persons for cannabis vio-lations in 2007, the highest annual total ever recorded in the United States, according to statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of investigation. Of those charged with cannabis vio-lations, approximately 89 percent, 775,137 Americans were charged with possession only. An American is now arrested for violating cannabis laws every 38 seconds. Money spent so far on war on drugs so far this year 5,815,431,985 (As of 4/14/09). People arrested so far this year -- 535,366. (www.drugwarfacts.org). So far, TrilliONS of dollars have been spent on the war on drugs, and what have we learned? More people die from aspirin than marijuana. There are no violent crimes as-sociated with marijuana use. As a matter of fact, just the op-posite is true. Examining the relationship between marijuana use and violent crime, the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse concluded, “rather than inducing violent or aggressive behavior through its purported effects of lowering inhibitions, weakening impulse control and heightening ag-gressive tendencies, marijuana was usually found to inhibit the expression of aggressive impulses by pacifying the user, interfering with muscular coordination, reducing psychomotor activities and generally producing states of drowsiness, leth-argy, timidity and passivity.” (Seems to me, the government would WANT everybody high as hell! i guess that’s where the prescription drug companies come into play.) Anyway, my viewpoint: legalize everything! That would stop the black market, drug violence, and put drug cartels out of business. Crime rates would drop substantially, and it would solve the prison overcrowding problem. The government could make tons of bucks. Sure, a few people would abuse the situation, but far less than those who abuse alcohol. As espoused in libertarian thought, we are all personally responsible for our actions.

2. Income Tax – ABOliSH THE irS! Don’t get me started! This illegal organization enforces an unconstitutional tax sys-tem. Did you know that the first 40% of every dollar you pay goes to paying back the iNTErEST to the Federal reserve?

Page 27: Brevard Live May 2009 - 1

Brevard Live May 2009 - 27

(Another illegal organization). What interest? The interest on the money the Fed charges the government for printing our money! The tax code is so complex, nobody understands it, even tax accountants. We need a simple fair tax system. i wouldn’t mind paying taxes if they went to the betterment of the masses. it doesn’t! it pays for bailouts and keeping lying a**holes in business and power. There is a growing tax-revolt movement going on right now. Check it out online. look up “Tom Cryer”. Stop enabling tyranny! 3. Health Care – let’s get the lying, cheating, cash-mon-gering, greedy-ass, politicking lobbyists from the drug and insurance companies OUT of the health care industry. if you truly had a fair market, prices would drop substantially (re-member the good old days when you used to be able to get prescriptions filled in Canada?). Much of the cost of lobbying is worked into the cost of products. Therefore, without that cost, products and services would be much cheaper. After all the fluoride and junk the major food corpora-tions put in our food, there should be plenty of work in the health care industry. i mean, how much high-fructose-corn-syrup and artificial dye #39 can a body take? We should have the latest in technology and best facilities, EVErYWHErE! We should have the best trained (and paid) workers in the world. imagine a health care system that actually cared about your health! Not that we can’t do this, if it weren’t for the ones making the top dollars who won’t let that happen.

4. Education – When i went to school, we had to know what endoplasmic reticulum were and how to conjugate a verb (by the fourth grade, too!). i know some current high school graduates who can’t. This should be one of THE top issues, but al as, bureaucracy once again spreads like a spring moss in kentucky, enveloping all that crosses its path. We could pay teachers more without so much red tape. The organiza-tions put there to protect the system are instead, strangling it. i know, let pay the teachers what the Congress and Senate make, and vise-versa! let’s see how many people want to run for public office then! The (fair and balanced) education of our children should be the best where ever you live and no matter how much you make. it is the wisest investment in our future, economy, and national security.

i think we can do a lot better. These past 2 articles have been my view of my perfect world. Would it be perfect for everybody? Probably not. i just base my views on the Consti-tution, which should be restored, firstly and foremost. (Why is it that belief in the Constitution is now an almost covert idea?) if greed and power remain the impetus for our Demo-cratic republic, we are doomed. Those who do not follow Constitutional principles should not be subordinated with taxes, votes or anything else! There are more than 30 states now claiming their 10th amendment rights over the Federal government. Many more officials are starting see that, as pub-lic servants, their job is to make sure that their constituencies’ needs are taken care of. Our duty as citizens is to elucidate our wants and make sure they see it through. These were the wishes of our forefathers, as they should be ours.

good directors usually make fine films. This is an ex-ception. Director Alex Proyas, who was responsible

for The Crow and Dark City (which incidentally sits in our top 10 Sci-Fi films of all time) gets tangles up in this web of mediocrity. Oscar winner Cage plays a recently widowed MIT professor named Kessler who figures out that the end of life, as he knows it, is very near. Too near for comfort. He tries to decipher a sheet of numbers and letters that his young son brought home from school, where it had been buried in a time capsule for 50 years. This unearthed sheet contains dates, times and other info having to do with global disasters that took place in the aforementioned half century and a few that have not tak-en place. Yet. That’s the premise of this hokey thriller in which the whisper people, well dressed, blond, alien types who like to stand and stare, get in the way of kessler’s knowing about this impending doom. Armageddon is ap-proaching and this time there is no Bruce Willis to save the earth. This movie should be called Blowing.rating: C-

Not to be confused with that other mall cop movie star-ring Kevin James, this half-assed comic flick is the

r – rated mall cop movie complete with all its crassness, crude dialogue and convolution. rogen play ronny Barn-hardt, head security at the generic Forest ridge Mall. This pudgy rent-a-cop is a pillar of weapon-free bravery who makes darn sure his shoppers and workers at the mall are safe from danger, especially since a dangerous flasher has been disrupting the normalcy of everyday peaceful living at said mall. He has a sweet tooth for Brandy (Faris) a teas-ing tart who works at the cosmetics counter. ronny still lives at home with Mom (Weston) a good hearted drunk who tells Ronny how she screwed his father on their first date. ronny realizes he wants to be a real cop and catch the flashing pervert. There is a slight bit of amusement with a dash of hilarity mixed in with a touch of stupidity to make this dumb movie work. liotta as the real cop in charge of the case is a hoot. This extends the movie career of that likable schlub rogen.rating: C

I Love You ManStarring: Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones & Jaime

PresslyRated: R

Running Time: 110 Minutes

This highly low brow movie is a funny man-meets-man buddy film that also passes as a romantic comedy, if

you will. it tells the tale of Peter klaven (rudd), a mild manned l.A. real estate agent with high hopes of selling lou (TV’s original Hulk) Ferigno’s mansion. He has just gotten engaged to his girlfriend Zooey (Jones) and real-izes that he has no true buddy to be his Best Man. He goes on several man dates to find the right guy. (not for love but simply to find his second for the wedding) Finally he meets Sidney Fife (Segel) who teaches Peter to release his inner self and became a real man, doing masculine things with his new found bro. rudd is very good in this role with his subtle sense of humor and great comic timing. With Peter’s new male friendship in high gear, bride-to-be Zooey becomes quite perturbed at the amount of time the 2 are spending together. Segel is likewise funny and likable in this raunchy and frank yet predictable film. This comedy gets an E for effort. But seriously, how bout a B?

gallagher has the distinction of being the first real star to come out of cable television. To date he has

done sixteen specials. Being one of the most thoroughly calculating perform-ers in the world of entertainment, he writes all of his own material, runs his own operation, and does over 100 con-certs a year, selling out the majority of them. A gallagher concert is an unfor-gettable experience. He is keen and orig-inal observer of hu-man nature and the American “scene.”

Nestled on the banks of the indian river, Cocoa retains its old Florida charm with its Historic Cocoa Village. it features a host of quaint, lo-

cally owned shops, a theater, and restaurants, which provide a refreshing retreat from the hustle and bustle of the nearby tourist hot spots. it also is home of four seasonal craft fairs and the Cocoa Village Summer Craft is this month on May 15 & 16, from 10 am to 5 pm.

Summer Craft Fair Invites Visitors

The most professional of folks, regardless of their talent, are stepping up to be the entrepreneurs during these challenging economical times. it is amazingly how most small busi-nesses get their start - through tough times. These folks go onto exhibit in galleries or start their own businesses doing something they love. Other artists are taking the op-portunity to get out of galleries to do shows and get in touch with the

general public. Particularly the May show is popular because cash prizes and awards in eight categories are available, and that’s why you find some finer art along with the crafters. Of course the show includes chil-dren’s amusements, food/beverage and Country kettler’s Corn, a county-wide favorite. For more information go to www.cocoavillage.com or call at 321-631-9075.

Brevard Live Music Awards 2009

This year, the Brevard live Music Awards will feature some of the amazing talent around

us. We will have a greater array of performers and hosts on the Henegar Center stage, making the show one of the top events in our area. This month we would like to introduce another host-ess - Miss lena who will open the show together with rock-legend Paul Chapman.

More Performers - More Show!

BMA-FAQQ: How do I acquire enough Brevard Lives (especially without making club and store owners upset, even if they have enough) to get their bands, musicians, etc. nomi-nated for the Music Awards if each one has to be on an original Brevard Live Ballot?A: This is a readers poll. We do not expect bands to ac-quire the magazine for the sole purpose of getting the ballots. But we hope that bands and musicians will en-courage their fans to pick up Brevard live Magazine and vote for them.

Q: How is this going to keep people honest any more than Xerox copies?A: it’s not - but it saves a lot of trees from being wasted on Xerox ballots. You should have seen the loads of pa-per that came to the office when we allowed Xerox cop-ies. We could have kept a recycling plant busy.

Q: How do I get a hold of the magazines?A: At all of our advertisers and most places that have entertainment. But we hope you play it fair by handing it out to people that are seriously interested in our mu-sic scene and not to your 90-year-old grandma and your 2-year-old baby.

Q: How do you know if someone cheats?A: if 20 ballots are mailed in one envelope with the same pen and the same handwriting, it’s obvious. We might not find every cheater, but we’ll get a pretty good impression about what’s going on. Besides that, people talk, brag and observe - and we’ll hear about it.

While we’re working on the show...... our host Paul Chapman was visiting in Scot-tland. The pho-to shows him with his guitar pals from iron Maiden. rock on!

lena is not a newcomer to the music scene, she grew up in it. Her father Joe McAneney has been a musician him-self playing in some popular Florida bands, Tin Can Jets being the most recognized one. Early on Joe believed in his daughter’s talent and tried to foster it by getting a some good teacher - UFO-guitar sensation Paul Chapman. Besides honing her multi-instrumental and vocal skills, lena concentrated on writing her own music. Her song “i Crashed Your Car” became some recognition and is now on radio playlists in germany via the Alphabeat radio Net-work. 29 FM stations, plus shortwave radio too, for our sol-diers overseas, all playing the syndicated show throughout Europe. in January 2000, she releaser her debut CD, Everything Counts. Brevard live reviewer Chris long wrote: “lena may have just restored my faith in new music. in the current sea of brainless, clueless and nearly talentless Britneyesque puppets, lena is a breath of fresh air.” Her CD got some airplay locally on WFiT. To find out more about this young talented lady go to www.lena.cc and listen to her sing and talk.

There’s a party going on in Downtown Melbourne and it’s coming to you from all over the world. A party pro-

motion company made up of Fla. Tech. students is bringing their international influence to The Mainstreet Pub every Thursday night. They call it “Mainstreet Pub University” and a college iD from anywhere in the world will get you drink discounts all night long. The music is pumping, the dance floor is full and the booze is cheap – what more could college students ask for? The company, C.A.V.E. Concepts, is made up of Christian Smith and Vishan Hosein of Trinidad and To-bago, Argentineans guido Carelli & Soledad Calvino and Joana Fiuza, a native of Brazil. They’ve all come to regard Melbourne as their new hometown and have been promot-ing events around the area to help develop better relation-ships between the college and the local community. “The best way to do that is with alcohol,” adds guido. He should know. As a guest DJ spinning for Thursday’s Mainstreet Pub University his beats are the heart of the action keeping the dance floor community alive while the keg gets killed. C.A.V.E. (their slogan is ‘Bury Your Behavior’) is spreading the word through word of mouth and the internet

and it’s spreading fast. College people from out of state are making Mainstreet University a party stop on their Florida holiday tours and FiT, UCF, and BCC campuses are well represented at the bar. The whole C.A.V.E. clan laughs and agrees when gui-do says: “in our countries there’s always a reason to party. We feel at home here in Melbourne and especially at Main-street Pub. We can bring ourselves and our culture here and share our parties with everyone”. The party changes theme every week so there’s always surprises, but the concept stays the same and it runs like this:1st Period (9-10 pm) – free drinks with iD2nd Period – (10-11 pm) 2,3,4, $2 draft, $3 wells, $4 shots3rd Period – (11-12 pm) A,B,C, specials on Absolute, Beam and Captain4th Period – (12-1 am) shot specials Spend some time at Mainstreet Pub University and you’ll understand what Vishan means when he says, “This place is addictive, you get attached to it”. guido would like to see the C.A.V.E. parties extend all over the world, after all, “Caves can be dug anywhere”. Check out C.A.V.E. Concepts on Facebook

i was watching this documentary about

critics the other night and it got me thinking about what it exactly is i’m doing with

these album reviews. i had to ask my-self…am i a critic? Am i the enemy? For a micro second i actually consid-ered putting down the pen and walk-ing away from the reviews section. But then i took some time to think. This is what i came up with. Critics, in the harshest sense of the word, don’t appear to have much skill of their own- other than tearing some-one down of course. And that really isn’t much of a skill in itself anyway. it’s way easier to destroy than it is to create. i understand that, and i believe that may be the biggest difference be-tween me and a “critic”. So i will review these albums that are sent, handed and thrown in my direction, but not as a critic. i will re-view as an observer, as a helpful voice whose opinion is only that and as a fan of music eager to hear what my fellow artists are creating.

Just BlueBelow the Damage

Just Blue is a mixed duo made up by Melissa Barelmann and Chad Fagg. Barelmann sings lead and Fagg plays

acoustic guitar and chimes in with a backing vocal now and then. The whole album is very simplistic in its approach and formula. There are no complex ar-rangements or orchestrations here, this isn’t about musicianship as much as it is about poetry and lyrical message. Ba-remann’s words come from a very pure and honest place and Fagg’s accompa-niment gives her the space she needs. i was happy the liner notes include the lyrics (i always love that), it gave me the opportunity to follow along more closely and really experience the emo-tion she was going for. i don’t know if this album is about just one relation-ship, but i feel like i’ve lived through the entirety of it after listening to these songs. “This time, this night, you swore it would be different,” “in both of us i fond the hurt,” lyrics like these draw you into Just Blue’s realm of sincerity. Fearlessly honest. i respect that most of all. Highlights are track 7, “Truth is” and track 11, ‘Catch Me if You Can”.

Arturo EncharteAcoustic Survivor

This guy not only has a really cool name, he can also play the old sixer pretty decently. This cd is entirely in-strumental and although i hear nuances of older rock, and even some folk, it

definitely leans heavy towards a Latin flavor. This cd was delivered to me with an enclosed note from one of his friends telling me that all the profits Arturo makes go to charity. So let me get this right… this guy’s name is “Arturo Encharte“, which is basically like saying “Antonio Ban-deras,” he plays romantic latin gui-tar, has such a generous heart that he gives his proceeds to charity. i can see from his picture that he has long, dark, romance-novel hair and probably even has a panty-dropping Spanish accent. What chance do the rest of us have?! i say we start a movement to have Ar-turo deported before he steals all our women! i’m just kidding Arturo…i think you’re great. My only concern with this album is the recording. i fear i’m missing out on the full range of the guitar sounds and i wonder if the acoustic was plugged straight in or recorded through a mic. I’m guessing it was the first option and because of that the mix is a bit trebly and mid-range. Otherwise i’m digging it though. For some laid back, mellow atmo-sphere check this guy out. And remem-ber where the money is going when you buy this cd. good on you Arturo! P.S. if anyone runs into Adam from 23 Trees, tell him i lost my copy of his cd and i need another one

The Shack belongs to one of the most popular restaurants in Brevard County, always known for good fresh sea-

food, a fantastic view over the indian river and a casual, layed back atmosphere. That hasn’t changed. However, the latest remodelling effort is amazing. While still a shack from the outside, the inside looks huge: Big dining room, a separate banquet room - and two large bars, one inside, one on the covered deck, both facing the indian river. Settle down there for a moment, and an eternity will pass. This view is out of this world. The menu is plentiful and enticing. We ordered the Crammed Bellos, a large portabello mushroom stuffed with crabmeat and spinach. it was delicious and enough for 2. Then i ordered grouper McBaine topped with shrimp and tomato. My friend ordered crabcakes, a longtime favorite at The Shack. The food, the service, and the hip 337 Cabernet wine were perfect for a romantic evening. And while the moon started rising over the river, we met Chef Mike, an old acquaint ant from the beach who has his own loyal following. We had to take a photo of him (left) and general manager Nick (right) - even though Mike wasn’t wearing his chef-jacket. Don’t worry Mike, you’re known for your bandana and your delicious food anyway.

There are a few places in Brevard County that epitomize the laid back Florida beach style. Long Doggers is defi-

nitely one of them. They have 4 locations in Brevard, the one i visit most frequently is in indialantic. Once a week fellow bikers get together to do the Wednes-day night ride. it’s a social ride to get people out during the week and help them keep up their riding skills and stamina. Most people do it on fat tires, or mountain bikes, but there are a few road bikes in the mix. The ride is a little under 15 miles and loops from long Doggers in indialantic to Eau gallie, over the causeways and down side streets to 192 and back to beachside. Then everyone packs up the bikes and heads in to long Doggers for an ice-cold beer and some post-ride grub. You’re not going to get roasted duck at long Dog-gers, that’s not what they’re about. Their fare reflects the atmosphere, which is super casual. it’s reasonably priced and everything i’ve tried is good. They’ve recently updated their menu, but my favorites are still there. i usually opt for the blackened chicken sandwich with fries. Every once in a while i’ll treat myself to their mushroom swiss burger - it’s one of the best in the area. Other favorites in our group are the tuna wrap, shrimp kabobs or one of their dogs. One new item is particularly popular: the peanut butter pie - absolute bliss. Other new menu items are El Diablo Chicken, which is grilled chicken smothered with hot pepper relish and shredded cheddar with a side of sour cream; a burger wrap, broccoli and cheddar soup and the Twin Fin Combo, where you can choose your 2 favorite (crunchy fish, fried shrimp or fried clams) to make your meal. They still have 29 cent wings every Tuesday night and 29 cent claims every Sun-day. long Doggers recently changed their beer menu as well. Though i was sad to see kona go, their new draught selec-tion is pretty good and includes Becks, Newcastle, Fosters, Blue Moon, Dos Equis, Miller light and Coors light. Of course, they have bottled beer and wine to choose from as well.

The menu and beer selection is the same for all long Doggers locations: indialantic, Satellite Beach, Melbourne and Palm Bay. For more information on their menu, spe-cials or events, visit their website at www.longdoggers.com. if you are a lone biker, looking for something to do on a Wednesday night, we usually leave at 7 pm.

Coolest Sunday Jazz Jam at Heidi’sBrevard’s Hottest Limos

JJ’s Hot Rayz operates the newest and largest fleet of limousines in Brevard County featuring 10, 18, 20,

25, and 28 passenger superstretches and the “Hot rayz Party Bus” where you can stand up and walk around. it’s luxury galore all the way. And that’s why JJ’s Hot rayz is now the official limo-service at the Brevard Live Music Awards this year! Owner JJ Hollis and his friend and general manager Mark Otto have been in the biz for a while. About 10 years ago they opened JJ’s limousines and soon became the number one limo-service in town. Very soon, the name JJ stood for quality, business was great - and in 2003 JJ decided to sell the company including his good name and to get out of the limo business. End of story? Not by far! in 2007, the limo company Hot Rayz was in financial dire straits facing bank foreclo-sure. JJ Hollis and Mark Otto decided to take it over and revamp the business. They added more cars and kept the drivers busy. The only problem: JJ’s limousines were not “JJ’s limousines” and that can cause confusion. As a matter of fact his former limo company went out of business and it took another effort for JJ Hollis to finally get his name back in December 2008. lesson learned! “i’ll never sell my name again”, promised JJ. Since the beginning of the year, Brevard’s largest limo-service is called JJ’s Hot rayz and features state of the art luxury, professional trained chauffeurs and reason-able prices. Today the limo-service has eight cars and 17 employees. You can take a virtual tour inside their cars at www.hotrayzlimos.com. They are located just south of the corner US 1 and Eau gallie Blvd. and you can reach them at 321-412-2202. No matter if you plan a great entry to a prom, wed-ding, anniversary or just a night on the town, JJ’s Hot rayz has the ride for you. good deal, because every county deserves a great limo-service.

We split a tasty cheese fondue and a “mile-high” Reuben Sandwich with German po-tato salad which was to die for.

This must be the longest Jazz Jam in this county, maybe in the State of Florida. What held it together for so many

years is the quality of musicians and the classy atmosphere of Heidi’s Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach. ron Teixeira, one of the area’s top notch jazz pianists, has been running it for ten years together with ron Pirtle on stand-up bass and Stan Soloko on drums. The same house-trio backs up famous guests that perform at Heidi’s frequently. Musicians line up for this jam. “We have up to 20 people sitting in on a Sunday night,” said ron, and some of them are already famous. On the night we visited we heard Matt Heis-ter on harp, Jerry Hoff on clarinet, vocalist Cindy Conrad and Winston Scott, a former astronaut who plays trumpet, and that was just the beginning. Three years ago Heidi’s Jazz Club underwent major re-modeling, literally doubling the space, adding a big stage and dressing rooms to accommodate the growing number of cus-tomers as well as the national and international artists who were performing at Heidi’s on a regular basis. Just everything at Heidi’s Jazz Club spell “class.” The baby-grand, the ambiance, the white linen, the wines and the food (full menu) which comes from the elite kitchen of the Heidelberg Restaurant, one of Cocoa Beach’s finest dining es-tablishments. So if you want to end the week on “a good note,” join the cool Jam at Heidi’s Jazz Club. You don’t have to be a musician to have a wonderful time.

located in a nondescript plaza on S. Semo-ran Boulevard, adjacent to a doughnut shop,

stands “Oh! Que Bueno,” a worn yellow build-ing with an attached wooden deck. it is remi-nescent of a home rather than a restaurant. The scent of sauteed garlic wafts from the building and permeates the immediate area. Perhaps, there’s something to a name afterall. Oh! Que Bueno is bueno. Not to mention rico, delicioso, etc.

A motley of tables crowded much of the simple din-ing area while an attached wooden deck provided additional seating. Families shuttled in and out of the restaurant with heaps of take-out while others lingered over the remenants of meals, chatting in their native language about their homeland and memories. A few college students pepper the area. On this cool spring late afternoon, i settled on a table, outside on the deck, just below the shade of a flowering tree. Oh! Que Buno’s menu offers traditional Colombian cusine as well as a sampling of other latin fare. i commenced with arepas, a flat cornmeal patty, and chorizo sausage. In Co-lombia, arepas can be served along with butter, cheese, and/or meat; however, Oh! Que Bueno they were plated rather simply, showcasing the natural taste and texture of the corn-meal, and paired well with the spicy, complex chorizo. The Shrimp ranchero provided a generous serving of jumbo shrimp in a spicy broth with a flavourful trio of green, yellow, and red bell pepper slices. A hearty mound of rice and tostones, twice fried slices of green plaintains, complet-ed the dish. The shrimp broth was peppery and comforting while the tostones were well seasoned and crunchy. The Palomilla Steak dish was more than bountiful, a large sirloin steak slathered with minced onions and garlic, paired with rice, frijoles, and yuca fries. The cut of meat carefully balanced fat and flavor, and was tender and juicy throughout. The yuca fries were crispy, while maintaining the soft, starchy filling, and left little room for the tender rice and frijoles. The dessert selection features staples of latin America confections such as Tres leches and Flan; however, the

Brevas Con Arequipe, cooked figs drizzled in sweet syrup and topped with ultra-rich caramel, surpassed the others due to simple presentation and unforeseen flavor. The sweet, grainy figs paired well with the thick caramel. The same menu is served throughout the day. The res-taurant also features a full bar and soft drinks, including Postobón, one of Colombia’s largest beverage companies.

You’ve Tried The Rest.... Now Try The Best!by Lisa Cavallaro, MA

Health & Beauty

No, i’m not quoting the box last night’s dinner came out of. i’m

talking about weight loss. The number of clients telling me they’ve tried “everything” to lose weight, but just can’t seem to “get it right” is pretty close to 100 percent. • Starvation.• No carbs. • Low carbs.• Weight Watchers. • The Zone.• Jenny Craig The list goes on and on and often, so does the weight. Diets often lack taste and variety, create deprivation, cost a bundle, and add to our frustra-tion. We barrage ourselves with unhelp-ful thoughts. “What is the answer”? “is there even an answer”? “Maybe it’s not the diet. it must be me. i just can’t do this. There’s something wrong with me”. The answer is so obvious that it’s often overlooked. The one thing all diets have in common is that they all exist outside us. Yet we use them to control our hunger, which exists inside us. To offer a visual… it’s like snatch-ing our power button that lives inside

us, and handing it over to some book, idea, or pill that belongs to someone else. let’s face it… we all have differ-ent likes, dislikes, and metabolisms. What works like a charm for one per-son is likely to be another person’s nightmare. Guidelines can definitely be helpful, but following someone else’s plan day in and day out is an in-sult to our individual capabilities. Far better than a diet, what worked for me almost 30 years ago and con-tinues working today is using my own internal controls. Not believing i had these, at first, I now believe that we all have them. We all have hunger, an ability to sense and understand it, and the capacity to control what we put into our mouths. Although we sometimes like to argue that we have no control, the fact is that we all do… because having control but not using it is very different from not having control. So, let’s say you HAVE tried all the rest. Now try the best – YOU! When you were born, you had two legs, didn’t know how to walk with them, and months later learned how. You can do the same with your internal control. Don’t fool yourself into think-

ing that just because you never used your control, you never will. The answer to your own weight dilemma doesn’t come from a pill or a diet. The good news, my friend, is that the key you’ve been looking for is right there inside you. YOU are the answer. You knew this about yourself when you were a toddler wanting to walk and you can access that very same cer-tainty right now. The main difference between YOU THE TODDlEr and YOU THE ADUlT is that somewhere on your road through adulthood you learned to doubt yourself. remove that doubt and you’ll find that same confi-dence and determination. The only thing standing between you and that healthier, thinner body is acceptance of your own power. So, how about snatching that Power but-ton back and putting it right where it belongs?

CynthiaPerry

Perry stated that she has drawn throughout her life, but she did not necessarily start out to become an artist. During college, she studied romance languages (French and Spanish) and took art classes in drawing, painting and sculpting as electives. Her studies came in especially handy when she went to the University of Bordeaux in France during her junior year. She was lucky to have many experiences others only dream of. For example, while there, she took a student sponsored trip behind the iron curtain and went on to have a pen pal in Budapest for 5 or 6 years. Since this occurred during the cold war era, she found it especially poignant to experience and get to know other ways of life and points of view.

After her year in France, she stayed on longer to travel through Scotland and to attend a seminar on Shakespeare in Stratford- on-Avon. Experiences such as these served to create a depth of knowledge and ignite a level of creativity that can’t be duplicated in a classroom. Following her senior year, Perry went to london to work as a nurse’s aid in a hospital for six months. Then she returned to Florida and attended graduate school to become a teacher. As a result, she taught English as a foreign language in Tallahassee. Again, the experience expanded her understanding of other cultures as she taught students from throughout the world who were entering the university system.

Creativity has guided Cynthia Perry

through every stage of her life. Whether mastering romance languages or drawing, throwing pottery, dancing, or painting, she has used her talents to express herself creatively to others.

Cynthia switched creative modes when she moved to Oak ridge, Tennessee. While there, she danced with the Tennessee Festival Ballet under Anna-Marie Holmes who served as co-artistic director. Perry danced in productions of “The Nutcracker,” “Cinderella,” “Swan lake,” “les Sylphides,” and “giselle.” During that same period, Perry received recognition for her wheel-thrown porcelain pottery. She worked out of her studio in Oak ridge and was an active member of the Foothills Craft guild. She exhibited and sold her pottery through many of the area galleries and in craft shows. This is where she got her real start in creating art. She did very well with her pottery and attributes this to the fact that her pieces were unique. Before moving to Melbourne, Florida, Perry’s life took a new direction to Texas where she attended night school and started working for Digital Equipment Corporation repairing computers. As a balance to the seriousness of her work, she crewed regularly for a hot air balloonist. During that period, she had little time for art. Due to a transfer with the company, Perry moved to Melbourne. After moving to Melbourne, Perry decided it was time to paint. She chose watercolor as her medium. At first, she taught herself and just played around with it. When she was ready, she began taking lessons from Mary Warnick. She also received instruction from J. J. Tremble in a group for 4 years. And most recently, she has started taking classes from Therese Ferguson. Perry is now an award-winning painter. Her watercolors are beautiful and vibrant. What sets them apart is the depth of the color and the natural light within them. She admits that the light draws her to painting. She even goes so far as to say that she works to see how the light refracts and plays on a subject; and if the light doesn’t turn out right in a painting, the painting

goes in the trash. Fortunately, Perry is very good and this doesn’t happen too often. in addition to painting, Perry has recently added gourd art to her repertoire. Ferguson advised Perry about a getaway at a gourd farm in Bradenton, Florida, a while back. Perry went to relax and take a workshop or two. As a result, she has developed one-of-a-kind art purses and has begun attending the Brevard gourd Patch, a group that meets monthly. in addition, she is creating some baskets

from gourds by finishing them off with woven rims. Perry finds working with gourds a nice diversion and a reminder of the 3-D pottery work she used to do. Perry gives back to the community of artists through membership in the Strawbridge Art league, the Brevard Watercolor Society, the Brevard Cultural Alliance, and the Florida Watercolor Society. She recently won the BWS Award for her entry in the Vision 2009 Juried Exhibit sponsored by the Strawbridge Art league.

Her beautiful watercolors are currently hanging in the Art and Antique Studio and gallery at 1419 Highland Avenue in the Eau gallie Art District, at the Beach Street Eatery in Melbourne Beach, at the Holy Name Catholic Church on A1A, in Melbourne Square Mall, and in the Holmes regional Cardiac Center. And just recently, two of her paintings were included in the Capitol show. They are “Morning light” and “lighthouse.” Cynthia is a member of the Art and Antique Studio and gallery. She has belonged to the gallery for 4 ½ years and is grateful for her involvement with the group. She says of Art and Antique, “The gallery is my family. The artists support one another. it’s a sharing and caring environment.” How wonderful to be able to create with the encouragement of others and to have the result be beautiful works of art. One For The Road

By Joey SimaoWhere Do I Start?

rumor has it that Obama will rename gM which stands for general Motors, to government Motors. Obama

promises that the government will stand behind the war-ranties of all general Motors automobiles. That statement alone will kill gM. Who in their right mind would buy an automobile knowing the government is going to take care of fixing it. Just imagine going to your local car shop to have your automobile repaired and before they can start any work they would have to call congress for approval. Are you kidding me? Everyone knows that the minute the government gets involved with anything chances are they will screw it up. Since Obama basically fired GM’s CEO Wagner he is now responsible for everything that happens to the com-pany. Every time gM comes asking for money Obama is going to have to give it to them or it will be his ass should thousands of workers be laid off or let go. Now politically that would hurt him in 2012 so trust me he will just keep dumping more money when asked. it must be nice to use others people money to try and make yourself look good. Who would want to work for gM knowing that Barack is their CEO except people at Acorn? i wonder how much experience Obama has in running an automobile company, or for that matter any company. The answer is a big fat goose egg. Zero Baby! Maybe gM will come out with the Obamamobile, very sleek in design with mirrors that stick way out like his ears. Once inside the car you push a button and the car takes you where it thinks you should go, not where you want to go. The car knows what’s best for you. For fuel it runs on broken promises and a lot of hot air which the government has plenty of. They were thinking about building the Biddenmobile after Joe Bidden but they decided against it because no one knows who Joe Bidden is. it would just be a big waste of time. Just like Joe Bidden’s career in politics. They also knew the car could not get anywhere on its own and would always need to be pulled along. Again, just like Joe Bid-den. Another thing that really turns my stomach is when i keep hearing Obama say, he is watching out for our money. That he is going to get our money back. That money is not OUr money nor is it MY money. it’s the government’s money. if it was my money, it would be in MY bank, or in

MY investment portfolio, or in MY pocket. Since the gov-ernment took it from me it is now theirs and when they blow it like they always do, they will just look for other ways to take more from me. So please, cut this crap that you are looking out for MY money. How about Barack bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia, then trying to deny he did it. There is video tape clearly showing that he did. What’s his excuse? That he had stom-ach cramps, and he was bending at the waist to pass gas. Or perhaps the king’s fly was open and he wanted to get a look at the royal penis. Seriously, why would the President (and i use that term lightly) of the United States bow to a man that funds terrorist groups? i will tell you why. Obama is in awe of the man because he is a “king.” That is what Obama really wants to be, the “king of America.” i have never in my life seen a man so full of himself as Obama. This community activist, college professor, junior senator thinks he has all the answers not only to America’s problems but the world’s. Yet, when he was a senator he did absolutely nothing. it was documented that he voted “pres-ent” over one hundred and thirty times. That meant he was not going to vote for or against the proposed bill; he was just going to sit there and do absolutely nothing. i guess he just sat their day-dreaming about one day becoming the president. Someone needs to wake this guy up and tell him he is the President of the United States (damn i hate saying that) and to start acting like one. it’s a good thing i am running out of space because i have a few words for his wife. But since this is the month for Mother’s Day, that will have to wait until next month. For all you mothers out there and you know who are: Happy Mothers Day. Write to me at [email protected]. Whew! i am glad i got that off my chest.
