Course Objectives: Students will be able to:

• Comprehend and communicate basic legal terminology applicable to tourism, events and recreation;

• Be able to conduct legal research regarding tourism, events and recreation matters;• Generally understand the United States legal system, and be able to describe how laws

are made and interpreted by the courts; • Explain the the role of law in tourism, events and recreation; • Understand the economic, social, and political impacts of event; • Study legislation, standards, and other legal concepts and subject areas related to

tourism, events and recreation; • Identify, analyze, and discuss legal issues faced in tourism, events and recreation;• Apply risk management principles to the safe operation of tourism, events and

recreation; and, • Generate solutions to address legal and risk management concerns in the tourism,

events and recreation industry.

Course Description: Concentrates on the legal aspects of tourism, events and recreation management to assist students understand of the law as it pertains to their area of specialization and improve risk management practice.

The course provides students with a basic understanding of the risk management process, negligence, policy, contract law, constitution and issues relevant to tourism, events and recreation management. The goal of the course is to enable students to avoid or reduce the probability of legal liabilities in their respective field.

The central theme for the course is tourism, events and recreation related; however, the legal theories discussed are applicable to a broad category of curricula.

Assessment Methods: Student performance is based on but not limited to exams, assignments, quizzes, essays, presentations, attendance, and projects.

Grades: Grades are dependent on the student’s performance measured by, but not limited to, exams, assignments, in-class activities, presentations, attendance, and/or projects. Final grades are based on the accumulation of points the student earns throughout the semester. Total points are converted to letter grades using the grading scale provided within. The grading scale is strictly enforced and unchangeable. The professor will NOT change grades at the end of the semester because the student is unhappy with their academic performance. Grades are maintained on the CANVAS site.

Exams 1 and 2: Two (2) exams are administered during the semester based on lectures, discussions, guest speaker(s), case studies, simulated exercises, group work, and supplemental materials. Exams are cumulative and include multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, and short answer questions. Make-up exams are NOT permitted unless absences are in accordance with the University’s Make-Up Policy. Exams dates noted in the course schedule are tentative.

Case Study Quizzes (online): Four (4) online quizzes will be given during the semester based on the case study reviews. The quizzes will be administered via CANVAS. The quizzes include multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, and/or short answer questions. You will have a 24-hour period to complete the quizzes once opened. Students will be provided with advanced notice of the quiz dates/times.

MISC.: Students will be provided one (1) MISC. assignment during the course of the semester. Please read the contents of the syllabus carefully regarding the assignment requirements and due date. Students are required to physically hand-in the MISC. assignment on the required due date/time.

Legal News: Students are required to research and bring to class three (3) legal news articles (videos) pertaining to the tourism, events and recreation management industry (not previously discussed). Credit is earned if the student is present in class on the date and time the legal news is discussed. A hardcopy of the students findings are required to be turned in with the students name and date on the top left corner of the article on the date the findings are discussed. Zero (0) points are earned if the student is absent, arrives late, or leaves early from class (NO EXCEPTIONS!).

Case Review: Students will be responsible for the analysis of a selected case and are required to provide feedback regarding the selected and/or assigned matter. Students will be provided with three (3) options and will select one (1) case to evaluate. Students will be responsible for constructing a series of written questions regrading the matter. Students will submit in-class via hardcopy.

Group Project: Students will be responsible for collaborating on a group project regarding a legal matter that has impacted a tourism, event or sport management organization. Requirements of the group project will be provided. Students will submit it to CANVAS upon completion.

Course Policies:

Professional Behavior: Professional behavior is expected from all students. This includes respect and consideration for students, instructors, TAs, guest speakers, and supervisors. Examples of appropriate classroom behaviors include, but are not limited to:

• Paying attention to lectures; • Reading course materials before class; • Engaging respectfully in class discussions; • Arriving to class on time; • Entering the back of the classroom if you are late; • Abstaining from side discussions with other students; • Refraining from the use of cellphones during class; • Putting away all electronic devices (unless otherwise instructed or agreed upon) before

class begins; and, • Demonstrating the use of appropriate language through communication in the

classroom and/or via email.

Attendance: Random attendance is taken throughout the semester via the misc. assignments three (3) to five (5) times.

• Points are earned ONLY if the student completes the assignment during the class period in which each assignment is given.

• If the student is absent from class, arrives late, or leaves early without completing the assignment, zero (0) points are earned. NO EXCEPTIONS!

• If you are absent from class, you are responsible for obtaining the missed information from a classmate.

Unexcused Absences: If a student has other commitments that prevent him/her from attending this course, the student should drop the course immediately. Unexcused absences include but are not limited to outside extracurricular activities, work, family or personal vacations, fraternity or sorority functions, problems with transportation, oversleeping, or choosing not to attend class. Missed information should be obtained from another classmate. • Center the title immediately after the information in the upper right corner and above the first line of text.
