Nelson Mandela once stated that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Gifts to the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving through a scholarship fund acknowledge the work of our

students and help them with the rising costs of education. Higher education is necessary for our students to

attain financial stability, and to be able to save for retirement, and allow our nation to compete in the global

economy. Every time one of our scholarship recipients earns a college degree, we improve the economy and

reduce the costs of crime, poverty and health care. Children who see their parents earn college degrees are

more likely to earn a degree themselves. Our communities thrive when the educational levels of the residents

are increased. A scholarship has a positive snowball effect—the benefits keep growing, long after the award

is received.

On behalf of the scholarship recipients, thank you! Your generosity has shown them how much the people of

their community care for and believe in them. The Hartford Foundation and donors to scholarship funds offer

these students an opportunity to change their lives. Together, this year, we will award more than $1.3 million

in scholarships to residents of our community attending two-year and four-year colleges and universities.

Your gift is changing our community, and also the world.

Hartford Foundation CollegeScholarship ProgramOur scholarship funds were created by people and organizations of all types

and from all across Greater Hartford. Their situations vary greatly. But they all

share one motivation—to help students afford a college education.

Because of these donors’ generosity, last year the Hartford Foundation

awarded more than $1.3 million in support of college scholarships to more

than 600 traditional-aged students and adult learners at four-year and two-

year colleges. Most of the scholarships for traditional-aged students are

renewable, enabling students to receive significant support for each of their

years in college as long as they maintain a good academic record. Moreover,

these funds are endowed, which means that the Foundation can continue to

award scholarships to area students.

There are three ways to make a substantial impact on area students through theHartford Foundation:

1. You can create a named fund or contribute any amount to the HartfordFoundation’s General Scholarship Endowment Fund. Contributions are investedin our broadly diversified portfolio and the Fund makes four-year scholarshipawards—currently of $3,000 per year—for residents of Greater Hartford.

2. You can create a named fund or contribute any amount to the CommunityCollege Scholarship Endowment Fund. Contributions are invested in ourbroadly diversified portfolio and the Fund makes three-year escalating scholarshipawards. The awards are for graduating high school seniors attending a communitycollege in the fall after their graduation from high school and we also awardscholarships to non-traditional adult learners.

3. With a sizeable gift, you can create an Individual Scholarship Fund and namespecific selection criteria for your scholar. The Foundation can help you decidehow to participate in reviewing or nominating potential recipients. We will alsohandle scholarship distributions and renewal applications, and help youcommunicate with your scholar if you choose.

Attending college was always a priority for ShantelHoneyghan, who moved to the United States from Jamaicain 2001. “I knew that this was my opportunity to makesomething of myself and to excel as an academic scholar,”she says. So far, Shantel has done just that.

Shantel was a model student at Bulkeley High School inHartford. Her high school history teacher described Shantelas “an exceptionally responsible, mature, passionate andindustrious student who is driven by a deep, intrinsic desireto excel” and noted her “strong and enduring commitmentto social justice and serving her community.”

That commitment was evident throughout her years ofundergraduate study at the University of Connecticut.Shantel takes pride in her involvement with on-campusactivities, which reflected her interests and careeraspirations.

She served as a tutor and counselor for the UpwardBound program, where she co-taught lessons and workshopson college acceptance and supervised students indormitories and on college visits. Shantel was a teachingassistant for the African American Cultural Center. Herextracurricular activities led her to her passion of serving asa resource and mentor for underrepresented collegestudents.

Shantel even took the initiative to start a neworganization on campus. After noticing a lack of diversityamong students entering pre-teaching and educationprograms, she co-founded Leadership in Diversity, amentoring program that helps maintain and encourageconfidence and success in minority students as they pursuecareers in the fields of elementary, secondary and highereducation.

In June, Shantel addressed the Hartford Foundation’s2015-16 scholarship awardees at the 11th annual ScholarshipRecipient Reception, held at the University of Saint Joseph inWest Hartford. Shantel spoke about the value of herFoundation scholarship and provided words ofencouragement to the new recipients.

“The scholarship was huge for me,” Shantel said. “Ididn’t want to cheat myself out of a good education becauseI didn’t have the money, but I didn’t want to come out ofcollege with a ridiculous amount of debt either. Even withthe large increase in tuition at UConn while I was attending, Iknew my Hartford Foundation scholarship would be in myaccount, and that gave me tremendous peace of mind. It alsogave me an extra push to make it through.”

This past May, Shantel graduated from UConn with twodegrees — in English and human development and familystudies. She is currently enrolled in a graduate program atFlorida State University, where she is pursuing a master’sdegree in higher education and student affairs. Her ultimategoal is to be able to serve as a resource for students of colorin regards to postsecondary academic access and retention.

“I find it extremely rewarding not only improving myself, but others as well. I don’t want to change the world. I wantto change the lives of a few people in hopes that they will goon to help others in the same way I helped them.”
