Noting that there was ln some countnes a tendency towards admmstrative &chotomy in treaung family planning as a programme sepamte from maternal and child health,

Recalling resolut~on EM/RC35/R 9 on maternal and Infant mortality in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

1 COMMENDS the untiring efforts of governments, lntmatlonal agencies, and nongovmental organmuons to promote and protect the health of the mothas and Infants m the Region by adopung a hollstic apapproach based on the Safe Mothemood Iniuauve,

2 CALLS UPON Member States to make concated efforts to reduce, by the year uXK), maternal mortality m all counmes of the Region by 50% and Infant mortality by one-thlrd, or below 50 per thousand hve b h s , whichever IS lower.
