Grade 5 Camp to Canberra Flying to Canberra happens pretty quickly. We left just after 9.00am on Monday and arrived just before 10:00 which gave us the whole day!
We began at Parliament House with a tour followed by a role play debating a Bill for legislation and a visit from our sitting member, Tim Wilson. The students loved it and asked lots of questions. The next stop was the Mint, which is extremely popular. You need to look out for the $2:00 coin celebrating 50 years of Mr Squiggle.
Then off to our accommodation, the Alicia Tourist Park. Despite the rain and a power blackout the kids were very excited to get into their cabins. After tea we made it up the Telstra Tower this year for spectacular 360 views of Canberra. We could recognise all the landmarks we had visited during the day.
Considering most of us had been up since 5:00am we were all ready for bed when we got back to the park.
Tuesday was even busier! First Government House, then to the National Arboritum and one of the best Adventure Playgrounds. Next we visited the National Portrait Gallery and then went on to Old Parliament House and the Australian Electoral Commission to learn about Australian democracy and proportional representation. Our days outing finished at the AIS. We saw swimmers, gymnasts and volleyball players.
On Wednesday our kids set off to Questacon and the Australian War Museum. In the evening we had the best pizza in Canberra I am told, at Debacle. And on Thursday it is the National Museum of Australia and back on the plane to Melbourne.
Our kids can talk to you about our Parliamentary system, preferential voting and eligibility to vote, about Federation and the history of Australian democracy, the role of the Governor General and how a portrait can tell a story, not to mention everything they learned at Questacon. All of it was learned in engaging, dynamic and authentic settings.
Everyone who went to Canberra certainly needs a rest on Friday.
Brighton Primary will be celebrating Carnevale and Chinese
New Year on Tuesday 26th February.
Students are invited to come dressed to celebrate these
special days:
PREP - GRADE 4 students may dress up as any character
they like such as cartoon character, Pinocchio, famous sing-
er, artist, movie star, fairy tale character superhero (be crea-
tive).
All student to wear Carnevale masks provided.
Grade 5-6 students may dress up in RED (traditional colour of
good luck and fortune. OR the lucky colours of 2019 (red,
golden, pink, blue and green)
About these celebrations:
In Italy, Carnevale is the last celebration before Lent which be-
gins on Ash Wednesday which lands on March 6th this year and
marks the beginning of Lent being 40 days before Easter.
This a time when many Catholics deprive themselves of some-
thing they enjoy. The thought is to party until you drop and
spend the period of Lent recovering.
It is also associated with spring festivals and new beginnings.
Masks are worn to disguise oneself and become someone dif-
ferent for a day.
PREP-4 Students will be attending the in school activity present-
ed by Make a scene (Commedia dell, arte): ‘Pinocchio’ To be
held in the Performing Arts Centre
CHINESE NEW YEAR (Year of the Pig). This year Chinese New
Year falls on February 5th and usually lasts for 15 days. GRADE 5-
6 will be attending a Chinese cultural performance 'Lion Dance'
to be held in the gym.

Reducing the Spread of Infectious Conditions at School
Brighton Primary School has a responsibility to ensure we help to manage infectious diseases in a
safe manner according to the Department of Education guidelines. Our Infectious Diseases Policy
is available for all parents to read on the school website and I ask you all to make sure you are
familiar with your role as parents, and the schools role, in ensuring your children are at minimal
risk. If your child is sick, they need to stay home until they are well. This allows them time to
recover and reduces spread to others. We want to maintain a healthy school environment.
Please be aware that primary responsibility for the prevention and control of infectious diseases lies with individuals,
families and public health authorities. Schools are not expected to provide expert advice or treat students, which is the
role of the medical practitioners and health authorities as appropriate.
If your child is diagnosed with a vaccine preventable infectious condition the parent is to notify the school nurse as soon as
the diagnosis is made. A medical certificate must be forwarded to the school stating the diagnosis, exclusion period
required from school and must be clearly dated and signed by the GP.
The school will then ensure persons in the school community who may be at risk of infection are notified (whilst
maintaining confidentiality regarding personal details).
If you need further information regarding what is required when your child is unwell please visit the following website:
https://www2.health.vic.gov.au/public-health/infectious-diseases/school-exclusion/exclusion-periods-role-of-schools-and-child-care-services
Please remember that by practicing good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette this minimises the risk of infection to
others.
Contact me if you have
any concerns.
Thank you
Nurse Cecile
