History & Milestones

Established in 1981 in Chicago Founder Members:

Vishnu Vaidya, Sharad Godbole and Jaya Huprikar 1981: BMM Vrutta was started 1984: First Marathi Convention in Chicago

( 300 participants) 1989: First Major Constitution rewrite and adoption 1994: MAIYTRA, a Youth Organization was founded 2007: Second Major Constitution revision and adoption 14 conventions were held in major cities

Membership Lead: Ajay Dandekar

There are three categories of Membership• Marathi Mandal Members

– Any Marathi Mandal with 25 or more family members can become member of BMM– Membership fees and number of Votes as follows

Up to 100 Members $50 Annual Fee and 1 Vote 101 to 250 Members $100 Annual Fee and 2 Votes 251 and over $150 Annual Fee and 3 Votes

– Currently there are 50 Marathi Mandals in North America out of which 34 are BMM Members

– Each EC member has been assigned to a number of Mandal Members to provide continuous support and communication regarding BMM activities as well as to meet their needs

• Associate Members– Any organization with 501© (3) status in North America and being actively involved in

promoting Marathi cultural events such as drama, music, dance and literature can become an Associate member

– Annual Membership is $50 with NO voting rights

• Individual Members - Individuals can become members on payment of an annual membership fee of U.S. $50 or a life membership fee of U.S. $1,000 with NO voting rights

BMM Convention Dileep Thatte BMMEC liaison

26th year of uninterrupted and successful venture of BMM

Most talked about event in Marathi community of North America

Generates heightened interest among Marathis all over the world

3 days of exciting activities such as plays, music, dance, seminars, youth programs to satisfy every age group

Provides platform for lectures, networking, interviews, business fair and medical convention and brings Marathi community together.

Marathi Shala Lead: Leena Deodhare

BMM’s goal is to make an uniform curriculum for Marathi Shala for all the North American cities.

The curriculum is made by a panel of teachers appointed by BMM. 

BMM will be starting a Pilot project with six participating Mandal members , as of  fall 2009.  

BMM is affiliated with Bharatiya Vidyapeeth, Pune on this pilot project. A three level standardized  testing  will be conducted by BMM and  Bharatiya Vidyapeeth, Pune on the basis of this curriculum . This system will be in place by Spring 2011 for all BMM Mandal members.

Marathi-lite initiative Goal is to bridge the gap between

generations and to encourage participation where Marathi fluency may be a barrier by creating an environment where those with varying Marathi speaking skills can feel like they are part of the greater Marathi community

want to share. We started with Mandal, then BMM and MAIYTRA. Next step of

this evolution is UttarRang.

So far two segments of Marathi community have received little or no attention

#1 : Marathi students coming from India

#2 : Second generation Marathis with families

Help Marathi students with local Marathi “host families” – to help them have some local contact and deal with “homesickness”

•Started in 1982 as hand-written, but changed face with technology

•Covers Mandal activities, articles, interviews, prominent Marathis, etc.

•Invites guest editors, Come up with special issues.

•Future Plans

•Reach out to all age-groups

•Attempt for English version to attract born in North-America

•Utilize technology (for example, Audio in Internet Edition)

•Involve Marathi community all over the world including electronic media

Talent Transfer includes performing arts, fine arts, and visual arts.

BMM will try to arrange the tours of Artists of North Americawho are affiliated with BMM Mandal members

• Promote upcoming, but talented artists.

• Make BMM’s 501(C)3 status available to Mandal members to keep costs down and to reap the advantages of non profit organization

• Enable tour organizers to work with BMM directly
