BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER

2017

It is unbelievable to think that it is December and we have absolutely no snow on the ground. It has been a very mild beginning to the winter months. Maybe this will be another easy winter for

us. Or, we could just be gearing up for lots of lake effect snow as it has been so warm. Whatever the case, I hope we get snow soon as that really makes it feel like the Christmas

Season.at this time last year we had absolutely no snow and we experienced a Green Christmas.

Christmas vacation begins on Thursday, December 22nd, with an 11:20 a.m. dismissal. Classes will resume on January 4th, 2018.

One of the very special events that takes place in our school every year, is the Christmas Program. This year the program will be held on December 21st, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Organized by our Band/Music Teacher, Mrs. Klann, the Christmas Program involves all students and staff, grades K-6, along with the Middle School/High School Band. Please join us on

December 21st at 7:00 p.m. and help us begin the holiday season with some special music by some special students.

On behalf of the Brimley Area Schools, I would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season.

Hopefully, the holidays will provide all of us with the opportunity to spend quality time with our families. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Brimley Area Schools looks

forward to the year 2018 with anticipation of continued excellence and success.

School Closings and Delays

We are in the time of year when weather may affect the opening of school. Whenever there is inclement weather, a decision to either close school for the day, or to delay the opening of school

must be made by 6:00 a.m.

If school is closed , or the opening delayed, we will send a message via our parent notification system, School Messenger. This message will be sent by phone, email, and text, if you have

provided that information to the school.

Page 2: BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2017 · will resume on January 4th, 2018. One of the very special events that takes place in our school every year, is the Christmas Program

Closings and delays will also be reported over local radio stations and television stations.

If there is a two hour delayed opening, school will start at 10:15 instead of 8:15. The buses will run two hours later than normal. Breakfast will not be served when there is delayed opening.

Each day, our seven buses transport approximately 330 students a total of 300 miles. The safety

of our children on these buses is our number one priority. Whenever a decision needs to be made regarding the closing of school, or to delay the opening of school, the decision will be

made with the welfare of our students and faculty/staff in mind.

Respectfully, Brian Reattoir Superintendent/Principal

Assistant High/Middle School Principal

Ms. McPherson’s first grade class wrote poems and letters thanking veterans for their service, bravery, and dedication to our country. The letters were delivered to the veterans at the American Legion. In return, the first graders received many thanks and thank you letters from the veterans. What a great learning experience!

Bays’ Ways  All the elementary students have been busy earning tickets. During the month of November, students were working together toward the common school-wide goal of an afternoon movie at the end of the month. TIckets are earned by following the Bays’ Ways throughout the building and at recess: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe and Be Ready to Learn.

Page 7: BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2017 · will resume on January 4th, 2018. One of the very special events that takes place in our school every year, is the Christmas Program

The photo below shows the tickets earned so far this year as the whole elementary works together each month to get enough tickets to reach the goal line. Ask your student(s) how he/she follows the Bays’ Ways at school and helps us reach the school-wide goal!

Daily Bulletin Our website now contains a Daily Bulletin updated each morning with events going on at the school and other announcements for parents and students. Under the “Information” tab on the

website. Please consider checking it daily for updates.

Mrs. Ver Strate Mrs. Castagne's First Grade Student of the Month for November is Maysn Miller. Masyn is one who never has to be reminded to say please or thank you, which is something we love! If ever a friend is in need of help, he is right there to lend a hand. He gets right to work every day and when he doesn't understand, he seeks out assistance like a responsible student. Masyn is respectful of his peers, teachers, and other staff, raising his hand when he wants to get a word in and waiting until it is his turn. He is a wonderful student that everybody is lucky to know!

Elementary School Volunteers A huge “Thank You” to our many volunteers who come into our school to assist our students and staff. Whether it’s coaching our students in cheerleading or basketball, running an after-school club, popping popcorn, assisting with fundraisers or chaperoning a field trip, we SO appreciate all of you! You definitely make a positive impact on our children and our school.

Bays’ Ways

We want everyone to know what an outstanding job our student are doing in regard to our Bays’ Ways Program. Staff are again recognizing students for positive choices and meeting the behavioral expectations in each area of our school by passing out tickets when students are “caught in the act.” :) At each of our monthly Bays’ Ways Assemblies, all elementary students combine their tickets to see if they were able to reach their goal set forth at the beginning of the month. If they do, and they have each month so far, the entire elementary school receives a predetermined reward. So far, we have held a dance party in the gym, distributed donuts and juice for all and last Friday, we offered two movie selections for students to choose from. The afternoon was spent watching movies in our pj’s and eating popcorn! GREAT job, everyone!

As in the past, this provides our students and staff with the chance to do some Christmas shopping for their family members. For the most part, gifts range from under $1 up to $5. . Please watch for the special Santa’s Workshop envelopes coming home in your child’s backpack. Several “elves” will be available to assist our small ones in making their purchases. Our varsity ladies’ coach, Mr. Ray Bell, and his family make this possible for our school. A portion of the proceeds will go toward purchasing new uniforms for our elementary basketball program.

Attendance Attendance is the single most important factor in a child’s academic and social success in school. Please take a moment to reflect on your child’s attendance (absences and tardiness) in school. Poor attendance is becoming quite an issue with many of our children. Whether the absence or tardy is “excused” or

Page 13: BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2017 · will resume on January 4th, 2018. One of the very special events that takes place in our school every year, is the Christmas Program

“unexcused”, the child is not getting the instruction they need to be as successful as possible.

In addition, tardy students are a disruption to the classroom routine and take away from what the teachers and students are trying to accomplish in the classroom. If you typically transport your children to school and are often late, I urge you to use our busing system…very seldom are they running behind schedule. In addition to Michigan’s Attendance Code, Chippewa County has a program called the Chippewa County Truancy Protocol. This step-by-step truancy program can eventually lead to consequences for parents who do not make it a priority to have their children attend school on time and on a regular/consistent basis. Please, let’s work together to give our kids the best chance to be successful! Thank you so much to all of our families who DO make regular, prompt attendance a priority! Your cooperation with this important matter is greatly appreciated. Requests For Bus Changes Please be sure to contact our office before 12:00 p.m. each day if you wish to have your child dropped off at an alternate location. Calls and requests for bus changes coming in after 12 p.m. may not be granted.

We do not have enough staff to be delivering bus notes to children and classrooms throughout the whole day. In addition, our office becomes very busy the closer it gets to dismissal time…late calls just add to the confusion and the chance that an error may occur in your child’s transportation needs. Thank you.

Christmas Program Our annual Christmas Program will be held on Thursday, December 21st

at 7 p.m. in the elementary gymnasium. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend! I am sure it will be a memorable evening with all the holiday spirit and the promise of Santa Claus showing up at the end of our program. Our program is under the direction of our music/band instructor, Mrs. Kaitlynn Klann.

Page 14: BRIMLEY AREA SCHOOLS DECEMBER NEWSLETTER 2017 · will resume on January 4th, 2018. One of the very special events that takes place in our school every year, is the Christmas Program
