Stewardship: Trust Sin breaks trust!

Trust is built brick by brick in the daily activities of life. Trust-worthy people create confidence and keep confidentiality. They focus on doing the right act, even when no one is watching. Yet, years of building up trust and keeping confidentiality

can be lost in a single act of distrust. A trust-worthy steward thinks before he or she acts. They do not let emotions, feelings, and the drama of life control their thoughts, words, and actions. But that person takes control and responds calmly, patiently, and most important prudently. Trust is built on decisive, prudent decisions even if those decisions cause others to reject, rebel, and even attack. Doing the right act — the reasonable — is not always easy, but it is rewarding. The reward is a clear, clean conscience that creates virtue, goodness, and harmony with God.

What kind of steward are you? We have been entrusted with much and Jesus expects much!

St. Padre Pio Patron: civil defense volunteers, adolescents, and the village of Pietrelcina.

September 23

St. Padre Pio was born Francesco Forgione on May 25, 1887, in Pietrelcina, Italy. His parents were peasant farmers. He had an older brother and three younger sisters, as well as two other siblings who died in infancy. As a child, he was very religious, and by the age of five he reportedly made the decision to dedicate his life to God.

St. Padre Pio was an Italian priest who was known for his piety and charity, as well as the gift of the stigmata, which has never been explained.

Pope John Paul II recognized Padre Pio as a saint on June 16, 2002.

Saint Padre Pio, pray for us, help us with our piety and charity. ——————————————————————————————————————————–—————————————————————

You are never more Like Jesus than when you are serving. We are always in need of volunteers on Saturdays and especially Sundays. Please let me know if you can help on either day.

An enormous shout out of thanks to Pete Trottier and Deacon Chuck Bowman for the completion and installation of the sneeze guard on the steam tables in the Soup Kitchen. Please come see their handiwork. Everyone was glad to see the change.

Items needed for the month of September: Jars of peanut butter (creamy or chunky) and any flavor of jellies or jams. We make sandwiches to take on their way out.

Thank you for your generosity. We have collected nearly 30 gallons of mayonnaise.

Pope Francis says…Every day, learn to water the grace of love. Then you will find God.

O Lord, who said, “Unless you become as little children you shall not enter the Kingdom of Heaven,” GRANT US, WE BESEECH YOU, to so follow in the way of blessed Saint Thérèse in humility and simplicity that through her intercession, these petitions and those of all our members may be granted as part of the shower of roses she promised to send upon this earth.

The Consecration A Sacrifice?

On that night, He took bread, blessed and broke it. This is the Passover, which is a sacrifice. The whole context of this night was the sacrifice of the lamb, pouring out its blood, and putting it on the door post. Clearly, the eucharistic prayer is a sacrificial prayer as it took place on Passover night when 100,000s of lambs were sacrificed and their blood poured out of the temple as a river. Jesus says my body will be given up (Greek: didomain), which is sacrificial language as used elsewhere in the New Testament, most especially in John (6:51).

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven;

whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread

that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

Another reference to sacrifice, Jesus tells us that (Mark 14:24)

“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out

for many.” Obviously, Jesus at the Passover uses sacrificial language. That is why the Eucharist, though in the context of a sacred meal — the Passover — is also a sacred sacrifice. This sacred sacrifice reveals the purpose of the meal — to free us from sin. The First Passover was a sacred meal that began with the sacrifice of an unblemished lamb to free the Israelites from the false gods of Egypt. Jesus, in this same context, becomes the Lamb of Sacrifice, and in the context of a sacred meal frees us from our sin as his blood and water pours out of his side.

Stewardship: Trust Love of money — not merely money — is the root of all evil, St. Paul tells us. Love of money, commonly known as greed or avarice, begins at a very early age. Children steal and steal often. If they do not learn the lesson of sharing, that is, justice, they easily grow up cheating and stealing in all aspects of their lives. They never become responsible for their own actions and eventually cheat themselves out of a virtuous life Today, this is known as entitlement. People expect others to provide and pay. Teaching children generosity and charity when they are young, learning and growing, breaks them from this entitlement mentality. Every thought beginning at a young age is crucial to correct and mold; so that as children grow and learn justice, charity, and generosity in small things, as adults they can be entrusted with much more significant and important responsibilities. When we look at the greed today in adults, we see it taught in subtle ways. No longer do we enforce consequences for small acts of greed, but we allow a person to continue to misbehave. Ray Guarendi teaches that consistent and effective discipline creates consistent and responsible children. Disciplining our children is rooted in our own adult self-discipline. If we are not honest, truthful, charitable, and generous — virtuous — how do we expect our children to be? To be a faithful steward, Jesus expects adults to be responsible in the small things, especially teaching children generosity!

People hunger for love, and this hunger is more powerful than our hunger for bread. Yet, many people satisfy their hunger for love, loving objects — not persons. Pornography epitomizes our hunger for objects. Instead of seeing the good, true, and dignity of another human person, we reduce that person down to an object for our own self-gratification. Greed also reveals our hunger for love, replacing integrity, decency and charity with possessions, using people to satisfy our hunger for wealth. Envy destroys the dignity of a person and we deceive, manipulate, and seduce another to glorify ourselves. Throughout Scripture Jesus talks much about money and the dangers of money. Lust, greed, and envy are powerful hungers which need to be corrected at their very conception otherwise they become powerful forces rooted in our selfish desires which ultimately destroys our very self, and in their wake, other lives are devastated. Our hunger for love needs to be purified daily. This purification process begins in the smallest of details. It begins with the smallest of desire. Purification examines the consequences of our actions first. It begins with what will ultimately happen. If we lust for another person, what is the

ultimate consequence of that act? If we steal even a small amount from

our partners or employer, what is the ultimate consequence of that act if he or she finds out?

If we insult and gossip about our friend, co-worker, spouse, or children because we are envious and jealous, what happens to that relationship?

Jesus teaches us hunger for righteousness in the smallest of matters, for if we are virtuous in small things, trust builds and more will be given; yet, he who is dishonest in small matters, even the smallest matter, that too will be taken away and given to the other who is responsible!

Page 5: Bringing all souls to Jesus through Mary, the Immaculate ... · St. Padre Pio was an Italian priest who was known for his piety and charity, as well as the gift of the stigmata, which

Scrupulosity vs. Laxity These are two obstacles in spiritual growth and formation. Both think they are living in virtue, that is virtuous, but are grossly misguided. In its most basic form: Laxity is the belief that nothing

is a sin, or that sin has no practical consequence.

Scrupulosity is the belief that nearly everything is a sin.

Both are the manifestations of a sickly conscience; both are obstacles to spiritual growth and holiness. At present, laxity seems far more widespread. In 1991, Cardinal Ratzinger explained some people view conscience as “too demanding.” So rather than listen to one’s conscience to seek the virtuous, they use their conscience to dispense with truth of sin. Viewing conscience as a “signal lamp” to the soul, Cardinal Ratzinger says, “The fact that the signal lamp does not shine is the consequence of a deliberate looking away from that

which we do not wish to see.” A lax person can void his inner voice of conscience so badly that it no longer cares to speak and much less does the person listen to it. His conscience in all reality is dead. It no longer recognizes temptation, nor evil. While laxity means looking away from one’s moral actions, scrupulosity means looking at nothing else but sin. While laxity refuses to blame oneself; scrupulosity constantly blames oneself. While laxity silences the inner voice of guilt, scrupulosity screams guilty, shameful, and sinful.

A scruple is often defined as “an uneasy and unfounded fear of having committed sin, based

on feeling rather than on reason.”

Scrupulosity is an obsession of the moral conscience (technically called a phobia) causing a state of acute anxiety. The scrupulous person lives in a spiritual haze which obscures the balance that a virtuous person lives. A scrupulous person no longer distinguishes between good and evil. Every moral issue which arises seems to present an insoluble problem: It is either evil itself or a temptation to evil. Whichever way the scrupulous person looks for a solution of their perplexities, their path seems plagued with serious sin. If reason says that a certain course of action is morally right, immediately a silly, nagging, interior voice pipes up that it is wrong.

Scrupulosity is a voice in back of their minds telling them so.

Whatever the scrupulous person wants to do, it seems either wrong in itself or inspired by wrong motives. They are afraid to defy the nagging voice of the phobia, because they confuse it with a rightly formed conscience.

The Sin of Envy by St. Cyprian By St. Cyprian of Carthage

“You who are envious, let me tell you that however often you may seek the

opportunity to injure him whom you hate, you will

never be able to do him so much harm as you harm your

very self. Where ever you are

your adversary is with you, your sin rankles within.

It must be a self-willed evil to persecute a person whom God has taken under the protection of his grace.

It becomes an irredeemable sin to hate a man who God wishes

to make happy.

Envy is as popular as it is hurtful;

it is the root of all evil, the source of endless disorder and misery,

the cause of most sins that are committed.

Envy breeds hatred. Avarice is begotten

and it lusts for honors and privileges. It is pure contempt of God. “

God wills everyone to be saved! Yet, to be saved, that is to be freed from our past and to live for the future, we must heal the past and begin anew in the present! Change is hard, especially when we do not know anything but the past. Change begins with a choice in which I allow God to take control and each one of my decisions builds and strengthens me to become the person God meant me to be: to be holy! Change is only as difficult as you want to make it. It is not about your strength, will-power, or desire. Change is attitude.

Our attitude is the driving force.

Many people continue in the same vein. Yet, when a driving force comes, our attitude changes and we realize that we are not only strong enough, but are more powerful, because

I never knew how strong I was until being strong is the only

choice I have!

Truth is, Jesus gives us the strength to face every challenge or struggle. He gives us his strength, but first, we must choose. We must ask for healing from our sins and our past. Healed, we enter into his strength, his grace, his love, and come to the knowledge of his unconditional love for us! We trust this truth. We no longer rely on our own strength to heal or deal with our past, we allow Him to lead and guide us through the challenges, to deliverance, then to salvation!

New Saturday Mass Schedule The Saturday Evening English Mass time will be 4:00 PM beginning Oct 5, and the Latin Mass time will be 5:30 PM. 3:00 PM Confessions 4:00 PM English Mass 5:30 PM Latin Mass After much discussion with the various groups, this new time accommodates the pastoral needs of the three parishes: Healy, Nenana, and Immaculate Conception. The reasons why we are doing this are the following: • To be in accord with Church

Law. The Vigil Mass is be at 4:00 PM or later.

• Confessions will be available when Fr. Tom is going to Healy and Nenana.

• Possibly help with other Saturday evening Masses in the area.

• Preferred time for Latin Mass priests and organizers.

Principles for Managing Parish Money

Money is powerful; yet, many people have very little knowledge of how money works. We hire experts to handle our money and we trust them to keep our money safe. Good stewardship keeps an account of money and reports the accounting. That is why having a competent bookkeeper and finance committee is essential for parish finances. Not only does good stewardship report, but prioritizes how the money is used. That is why we have to first ask, What are our financial goals? At ICC, our payroll is the main part of our budget, along with our building and maintenance. Added to those expenses, we pay utilities and assessments. These fixed expenses come first and then we must decide what are our other priorities. We spend $60,000 on our regional soup kitchen. This is an essential ministry of our parish and our Catholic Church! We serve the poor! Religious Education is essential; it is the essential mission: We teach, and bishops are the first teachers along with their ambassadors, the priests, who are called to preach and teach the Truth! We also use our resources to inform, inspire, and sanctify our parishioners. Finally, on going formation and training for the staff helps us to improve our services so we can touch the hearts of those who come for healing.
