Welcome to this year’s winners supplement for the 2020 British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA).

With all the challenges the industry has faced this year with Covid-19, it is great to celebrate the achievements of this industry on site and the initiatives the sector is developing to ensure we deliver better outcomes every time.

This year we have a couple of special categories – one celebrating the efforts made by the sector to overcome the challenges of coronavirus and continue working safely, and one celebrating improvements in design.

In this supplement we bring you the details behind the headlines of the award winners. This year, the BCIA went virtual for the first time ever. So if you want to relive the announcements or if you didn’t watch it live, you can catch up as you read.

Commercial Property Project of the Year

Community Engagement Initiative of the Year

The refurbishment of 1FA represents the dramatic re-working of a Grade II listed office building within the Broadgate

Unsworth Park is a major development, for Manchester University, and for the Fallowfield community. Located within a deprived community, the project delivers a 1,200-student accommodation project while aiming to leave a lasting legacy within the community by creating jobs for local people, promoting healthy lifestyles and addressing the wellbeing of local citizens. The project included an initiative to develop key workplace skills among local schoolchildren and another to involve local people in small projects to equip them with manual skills.

04 British Construction Industry Awards 2020

This category recognises outstanding commercial and mixed used buildings where the primary function/focus is on providing commercial space.

This award is for project teams who can demonstrate a recognition of the importance of working with local communities.

Social Infrastructure Project of the Year

Temporary Works Initiative of the Year

The £81M scheme includes construction of a basement auditorium, lecture theatres, seminar rooms and academic departments within two steel framed blocks of six and 13 storeys. At the design stage the building footprints were shrunk and their heights raised to incorporate a public square. Materials for the project were chosen to blend with nearby historic buildings in the Strand Conservation Area. Approximately 65% of the buildings’ elements were fabricated offsite to overcome site constraints.

10 British Construction Industry Awards 2020

This category recognises schools, colleges, hospitals, law courts and other civic buildings that contribute towards improved social service provision in the UK.

This category recognises the key role played by good temporary works design in construction.

The £73M project to upgrade wastewater treatment facilities and improve resilience was delivered safely, on time and below budget. Delivery was aided by the federation of designs from 12 suppliers within a single digital model. Collaborative working also helped identify £13.5M in savings.

U-Route calculates utility routes based on client and stakeholder priorities, transforming how networks are planned, designed, and delivered by programming engineering design rules to read environmental and socio-

economic data. It draws together open or licenced geospatial data, applying a weighting to each feature to buildingcolourmaps that indicate the relative “effort” of finding a path through a

particular region. Its use led to construction savings of 15%. By digitally analysing study areas, thousands of potential routes are appraised against an unlimited set of criteria, returning the optimal design at the earliest stage of the project.
