The festival of Raksha-Bandhan was fixed

on the day of Shrawani Poonam only

because the Indian culture has a plan for

making right use of will power. One who

gets sacrifice or worship performed for

oneself by a Brahmin priest is tied a kalawa,

an amulet for protection, by the priest. This is tied so that one is

protected from any dosha or disease affecting one's body which

may hamper one's power of determination. In the month of

Shrawan, the earth gets less sunlight. Therefore, different kinds of

germs multiply rapidly which cause diarrhea, vomiting,

indigestion, fever and body-ache. Hence on the day of Raksha-

Bandhan, Raksha-sutra is tied and resolve is made for the

protection of the health on physical, mental and intellectual

planes. What a deep psychology and mystery supports the

tradition of Raksha-Sutra!

PUBLIC PANORAMARaksha Bandhan “Myths and Historic Legends”

The Raksha Bandhan festival has many myths and historic legends

linked to it which can be traced back to the mythological Pauranic times.

The legend refers to a war between king of Gods Lord

Indra and demon King Brutra where the Gods were on verge of defeat.

Lord Indra approached Guru Brihaspati to find a solution who gave him

a sacred thread which was tied on his wrist, powered by the sacred

mantras on the Shravan Purnima by Queen Sachi also called Indrani.

The power of the sacred thread called raksha helped the gods to victory.

Demon King Bali a great devotee of

Lord Vishnu asked him to guard his kingdom leaving his own abode in

Vaikunth. Goddess Lakshmi who wished to see her Lord back went to

Bali disguised as a Brahmin woman on Shravan Purnima and tied the

sacred thread to the King and requested him to send Lord Vishnu back.

King Bali granted her wish by sacrificing his own needs . Thus the festival

is also called Baleva iwhich means Bali Raja's devotion to the Lord.

Lord Krishna cut his little finger while cutting

sugarcane. Rukmini and Sathyabama his queensi sent for a bandage

cloth but Draupadi his sister simply tore off a part of her sari and

bandaged his finger. In return for this deed, Krishna blessed her with a

boon of 'Akshyam' ''May it be unending' and promised to protect her in

time of distress and that was how Draupadi's sari became endless and

saved her embarrassment on the day she was disrobed in king

Dhritarashtra's court.

On Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh's sister visited and tied a

Rakhi on Ganesh's wrist. His two sons, Shubh and Labh become

frustrated that they had no sister to celebrate Raksha Bandhan with.

Bhavishya Puran :

King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi :

Santoshi Maa :

Lord Krishna & Draupadi :

Upon Saint Narada persuasion Ganesh created a daughter named

Santoshi Ma by divine flames that emerged from Ganesh's wives, Riddhi

and Siddhi. Thereafter, Shubh and Labh had a sister named Santoshi Ma

(literally "Goddess of Satisfaction"), who was well protected by them.

Yama, the God of Death who had not visited his

sister Yamuna for many years, visited her upon Ganga's insistence.

Yamuna was overjoyed to see her brother, and prepared a bounty of

food for him and in return Yamuna asked Lord Yama to gift her his

presence often . Yama was moved b his sister's love and agreed to see

her again. This made river Yamuna immortal.

When Alexander the Great

invaded India in 326 BC, Roxana his wife sent a sacred thread to Porus,

asking him not to harm her husband in battle. In the battlefield, Porus

restrained himself from attacking Alexander personally.

When Sultan of Gujarat,

Bahadur Shah invaded Chittor, Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen

realising her weak position sent a rakhi to Emperor Humayun and

requested him for help, the Emperor Humayun immediately set off with

his troops to defend Chittor although Bahadur Shah had conquered

the Rani's fortress, he fought against Bahadur Shah's troops and

restored the kingdom to Karnavati's son, Vikramjit Singh because the

queen along with other women, carried out jauhar to avoid dishonour.

Rabindranath Tagore, the Indian Nobel Laureate

for literature, invoked Raksha Bandhan In 1905, as a concept to inspire

love, respect, brotherhood and a vow of mutual protection between

Hindus and Muslims during India's colonial era.
