Producing a Weekly Bearcat News: A Cross-Curricular Activity Teacher: Sarah Collins School: Moody Elementary Curriculum Area: Cross-Curricular Grade Level: 3rd & 4th Time frame: August - May PURPOSE: The purpose of creating a campus newscast is to enrich our student’s educational experience by exposing them to different technologies, career opportunities, responsibilities, and academic challenges. The process of creating a weekly newscast requires writing, reading, research, communication and time management skills. Students will learn to thrive in these areas while utilizing teamwork and individual responsibility.
DESCRIPTION: Fourth grade students of Moody Elementary School will produce a weekly news broadcast. Broadcasts will include campus, district, and community news/events and special stories that extend classroom learning. Students will research, write, revise, and critique scripts for the newscast. Script writing, interview writing, proposal writing, and story research are just a few examples of the rigor expected from this group. Once the writing is completed, the students must create the necessary components of the newscast. Reporters will video their special features, writer will produce PowerPoint graphics, and anchors will rehearse and record their scripts. Each of these components must be completed within a specific time frame. Students will then finalize the newscast by importing video footage, and pictures, into the video editing software. They will edit and organize all components and save the newscast to a video formatted file. Finally, the video file will be loaded to district web page for public viewing.

QUESTIONS TO ASK
Will the program operate as a club or a class? How often will you meet with your students? Will the broadcast be "live" or "live-to-tape"?
“live-to-tape” is an expression in TV production that means it is done in a live manner but recorded for playback later. If you make minor mistakes, you keep going, just like you would if you were live.
How often will the broadcast "go to air"? Who is the intended audience? What roles will the students be responsible for? What type of stories will the students write? Will you need a room or space to set up your studio? Where will you host your finished products?
