About Masoom Masoom is an NGO set up with a passion for establishing quality education in night schools. Our students are mostly those that work during the day to support their families, but still nurture a thirst for learning that brings them to school even after a long day at work, and often long aps in their education. The Night School Transformation Program is specifically tailored to improve academic performance as well as the standard of living of students, including providing opportunities for higher studies and better employment after graduation. The Masoom Model is a three-‐pronged approach to facilitating long-‐term impact through Infrastructure Support, Capacity Building and Advocacy.
Mission: “Enable night school students achieve their full potential through educational and policy support
What are night schools?
Night schools are those that function in the evenings, catering to students who typically work during the day. Night school students are driven with the desire to pursue their education – this brings them to school even after a long day at work. Night school students are typically between 12 to 25 years old.
Challenges Faced by night schools:
1. Night schools only function for 3 hours compared to 6-‐hour day schools with the same syllabus to cover.
2. No government policy recognizes or supports night schools. 3. Most teachers teach at night schools after teaching at day schools all day. 4. Low attendance despite continuous enrolment drives due to external
challenges faced by night school students.
.
The Masoom Impact • Enrollment increased from 5 to 188 between 2008-‐2013. So far, a total of 410
students have been enrolled in night schools as a result of Masoom’s community drive. • SSC pass rates have increased from 36% to 72% proceeding the Masoom intervention. • 2 schools achieved 100% results in 2013 followed by another that received 92%. • Access to Braille program increased from 12 to over 50 students. • Masoom influenced the inclusion of night schools in Mumbai Human Development
Report 2009.
Every school under the guidance of Masoom is making rapid progress and has made tremendous improvement in all fields. The provision of textbooks, notebooks, nutrition, science equipment’s, and sporting facilities has lifted the financial pressures that these night schools were facing. Masoom’s intervention has created a large incentive for both the students and the faculty to increase the efficiency of their respective schools .The headmaster of one of the night school quoted “Masoom has increased our pace”
