Effi cient thermal insulation for notable energy saving: PVC is a good thermal insulation material: for this reason a frame is a perfect membrane between the outside and the inside of the building for maximum and minimum temperatures. A notable reduction in consumption of energy by air-conditioning and heating systems is achieved.

Elevated acoustic insulation: door andwindow frames are strong barriers to external noise pollution as the multi-chamber profi le stops sound waves and the gaskets absorb the vibrations of the glass.

The total replacement of lead in the productive cycle of raw materials is an important and essential requisite in the making of door and window frames. With the Greenline line, a new chapter in the production of profi les was started. All profi les in PVC used by are characterised by the use of an ecological chemical stabiliser based on calcium and zinc which gives them excellent properties in terms of look, practicality and durability. The decision taken by o completely exclude profi les stabilised with heavy metals in the productive process explains why more and more designers, builders and clients choose the products marked with Greenline brand.

Greenline windows in lead-free PVC

An industrial system and its products are compatible with the environment when they satisfy their needs and require-ments without compromising them. Analysis of the life cycle is a method of evaluation of energy and environmental loads associated with a product along its entire life cycle outlined as below.

The ISO 14040 standard supplies the frame-work of reference to follow to comply with this. The main indicators on a study of the life cycle are essentially of two types:

◗ ENERGETIC: This is the consumption of energy needed to produce a functional unit (in this case a specifi c model of frame or shutter). It is expressed in GER parameters (Gross Energy Requirement) that shows the overall demands of energy in MJ;

◗ ENVIRONMENT: This shows the consump-tion of natural resources, emissions into air and water and the solid refuse produced, again in reference to that generated by the functional unit. The GWP100 (Global Warm-ing Potential that is the potential green-house effect at 100 years) is expressed in Kg of CO2.

Now we can examine the methodology and the results of the studies relating to PVC window and door frames basically following this outline.

Regarding door and window frames the analysis method has been applied to the system related to the transparent closures made of:

The study has analysed three phases: 1 the productive phase, 2 the phase of use and 3 the end of life of a specifi c functional unit, that is, a window with the following characteristics:

The results as shown by tables 1, 2 and 3 show the optimum performance of PVC both in terms of the GER as well as the GWP (Tables 1 and 3) and a value of Kg of CO2 considerably better for wood and PVC than that of aluminium (table 2).

Table 1 summarises the energy requirement (GER) of the three phases considered (production, use and end of life) of a specifi c “functional unit” expressed in mega joule (MJ) (J measures the necessary work to exercise a force of 1 MJ = 106 J). The GER of the functional unit in PVC was the lowest of the three.

Table 2 shows the contribution of GWP in each phase (expressed in Kg of CO2 per functional unit). Also in this case the values of PVC are lower.

Table 3 compares the overall GWP of the three frames examined in the three phases expressed in Kg of CO2 per functional unit.

To have suitable door and window frames, conforming to regulation and eco-sustainable, here is the documentation that you need for buying the windows and that the supplier must give you even at the proposal stage!

The 10 fundamental steps before......deciding on purchase

1 CE markingCE marking is obligatory and the performance values defi ne the quality product. Thermal performance and air tightness must be indicated on the CE label of every single window frame contained in the order; the labels can be applied to the frame or sent as a document attached (a label for each window, even if they are all equal). It is not obligatory to show the values of the acoustic performance, wind and water resistance. The option NPD (No performance determined) does not guarantee that the product installed respects the national regulations that are superior to those called for with the CE marking. Even where NPD is indicated, it is recommended that you request the values, especially those of wind resistance for large window frames (static calculation).

2 Certifi cate of Conformity of PVC profi le The certificate identifies the profiles as Class S. According to the standard EN 12608 Class S is obligatory in Italy. This certifi cation attests that the profi les are resistant to radiation at severe climate. Windows made with Class M profi les do not conform for use in Italy but only for less sunny climates of Northern Europe.

3 Declaration of conformity to the standard EN 14351- 1/CEDocument drawn up in Italian that states the name and address of the manufacturing company of the windows as well as the declaration number, the order number, the year and the ITT certifi cate of the order itself.

4 Instructions for correct use, maintenance and care of frames Information for the basic maintenance, cleaning and correct preservation for functioning of window frames.

5 Product warranty By law, the warranty cannot be for less than two years and is issued by the company that sells the product. The warranty must clearly describe the types of faults and defects it covers, the type of intervention offered and the duration of the warranty.

6 Declaration of “energy performance” of the window frames This is to be issued in case of any fiscal incentive providing for 55% or 36% deduction from taxes related to restoration works. However, it is worth asking for the declaration in any case.

7 Declaration of conformityof glass to CE marking This is to be issued in case of any fiscal incentive providing for 55% or 36% deduction from taxes related to restoration works; this certifi cate states the performance values of the glass and the composition of the window pane. Remember that according to Italian legislation for glass safety (UNI 7697) when the glass pane is applied at a level lower than one metre from the ground, a double layer of safety glass must be used (stratifi ed glass).

8 Certifi cate of Origin and Certifi ed and Guaranteed ProductionThis certificate guarantees that the product is of Italian origin and it is issued by Profine Italia to the company which has an exclusively Italian production carried out in conformity with the Profi ne manufacturing guidelines and which has correct internal management for CE marking (assessed after specifi c audits).

9 Greenline Certifi cate of sustainability Issued by Profine to its partners, this document certifi es that the windows are made of eco-sustainable PVC, lead free, with ecological formulation of Calcium-Zinc and 100% recyclable.

10 Certifi cation of use of Metallic Supports exempt from radioactive contamination Document issued by the supplier of metallic supports that certifies the absence of radioactivity in the metal supports used in manufacturing the frames. Regulation by the European Directive 2006/117/Euratom.

Large sized doors with locks

Ideal models for secondary exits where access from outside is needed. They differ from French doors with the application of sash profi les with a greater height necessary for fi tting the lock and the through-fi xing handle. The hinges used are the same as for the French doors. Closure is with the use of three point automatic lock; two hooks and a bolt moved centrally by a safety cylinder.

The parallel-slide door system is a leaf frame that thanks to a sliding and transfer mechanism allows for tilt opening of the primary sash as well as sliding on a rail fitted to the frame. This mechanism, provided as standard device, allows for automatic coupling of the sash during the closure. This model is ideal for medium-sized frames which do not allow for turn opening of the sash due to its weight and dimensions.It is possible to fi t a through-fi xing handle.

The lift-slide frame is ideal for large glass windows that open out. The mechanism “Lift and Slide” guarantees slide opening and hold of the frame on very large surfaces with heavy sashes.

The pivot opening, rotating on a horizontal or vertical axis allows for opening of the windows and French doors with large-sized glazing, reducing any obstruction into the internal area to the minimum. The easy manoeuvrability is guaranteed by the hinge with rotating stops.

Rotation of up to 180° means that the glass is easy to clean when it is not accessible from the outside.

Due to the particular type of opening, the pivot window is not compatible with blinds, shutters, and manual mosquito nets.

VERTICAL PIVOT WINDOWUsually there is the same application with this as for the horizontal pivot hinge but is used especially when the glazing is higher. Windows and French doors can also be made with the axis not in the mid-line.

HORIZONTAL PIVOT WINDOWThe windows with pivot hinges on a horizontal axis allow for large-sized glazing with development in width and reasonable ventilation even when it is raining. It also allows for good exchange of air with the hot, stuffy air going out of the upper opening and cool air coming into the lower part.

LOAD OF UP TO 150 KILOSThe Maico concealed hardware can hold frames of up to 150 kilos of weight*.This means that it is suitable for windows and French doors with thick profi les, with double or triple glazing. In other words, it is the right hardware for frames with high thermal-acoustic insulation.

* 150 Kilos is the maximum load that can be applied for a

French door, the limit for a window of standard size is 130 kilos.

MAICO was the first producer of window accessories to introduce, back in 2000, the hexavalent chromium-free passivation of silver into the electrolytic zinc process, with later applications of silicate-based sealing film. This technique has given excellent results in improving the features of the surfaces and has been the fi rst valid alternative to the chromium plating process with hexavalent chromium. The hardware made of steel and/or in Zamak alloy is galvanized, passivated and sealed.Passivation with thick layers and the sealing confer greater resistance to corrosion to the components and the typical appearance of zinc coating on metal.

HIGH RESISTANCE TO CORROSION WITH ECOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGYThe use of innovative production plants and continual development, especially in the sector of galvanotechnic processing (sealing with nano-structural silicon) has allowed Maico to satisfy the requisites of class 4 resistance to corrosion prescribed by the standard EN 1670.Moreover, the process is absolutely ecologically sound and does not use hexavalent chromium.

FIELDS OF USE As has been shown, the most suitable hardware for supporting ordinary stress is hardware galvanized by means of electrolysis. In more extreme situations, for example when used in damp environments, in factories that produce certain types of food or in coastal zones the effi ciency is limited, even though the components have been tested according to class 4 resistance to corrosion; this is due to the chemical reaction of the zinc layer with aggressive substances.

When a higher resistance to chemical aggression is needed, the MAICO TRICOAT hardware should be used.

MAICO TRICOAT has been created especially for use where high resistance to corrosion is necessary.The special feature of MAICO TRICOAT hardware is in the fact that on the accessories with silver finishing already fitted, a further organic layer “Top Coat” (cataphoresis + paint) is applied on the surface treated with electrolytic galvanization; this gives to the components of MAICO TRICOAT the highest resistance to chemical aggression and corrosion and makes it far superior in quality compared to hardware treated with the normal galvanization process.

MAXIMUM RESISTANCE TO CORROSION WITH ECOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGYThe quality of MAICO TRICOAT hardware is superior to the requisites for class 5 resistance to corrosion prescribed by standard EN 1670.

Salt mist tests for resistance to rust corrosion have been carried out according to standard EN ISO 9227 at certified laboratories. As mentioned with the MAICO hardware with silver finishing, also with MAICO TRICOAT accessories the coating is absolutely ecologically sound and does not

make use of hexavalent chromium.

FIELDS OF USETRICOAT hardware is generally used in all the specifi c cases in which surfaces treated with electrolytic galvanization for resistance to corrosion are not suffi cient, such as in coastal areas, highly industrialised areas, in damp environments or factories with high concentration of corrosive agents, in swimming pools and companies that produce some types of food like butchers and dairies.
