NLMet de slogan Yes, we can eneen aantal beklijvende rede-voeringen veroverde BarackObama in 2009 stormender-hand het Witte Huis. In alletijden, landen en culturen, inalle maatschappelijke con-texten — van de meest demo-cratische tot de meest dicta-toriale — zijn toespraken een van de belangrijkste hef-bomen geweest in het poli-tieke functioneren van statenen gemeenschappen. Samenmet de Siemens Stiftungwijdt het Kaaitheater in SpOkEN WORLD een theatraalonderzoek aan de vormelijkeen inhoudelijke kracht(en)van de toespraak. Krachtendie een gemeenschap naaroorlog of naar vrede kunnenleiden, naar ‘het goede’ ofnaar ‘het kwade’. Of de tekstvooraf geschreven is ofwelter plekke geïmproviseerdwordt, het uitspreken vaneen redevoering gebeurt ineen welbepaalde context, ineen ‘hier en nu’ — net als inhet theater. Iemand geeftvorm aan een betoog, terwijleen publiek luistert — net alsin het theater.Theatermakers uit verschil-lende werelddelen makenvoor SpOkEN WORLD een voor-stelling waarin ze hunrelatie met het gegeven‘speech’ nagaan en die een plek geven binnen huneigen politieke en culturelecontext.

FRAvec le slogan Yes, we canet un certain nombre de discours poignants, BarackObama a conquis le cœurdes électeurs états-unien en2008. De tout temps, danstous les pays et toutes les cultures, dans tous lescontextes sociaux — du plusdémocratique au plus dicta-torial — les discours repré-sentent l’un des leviers lesplus importants du fonction-nement politique des États et des communautés. Deconcert avec la SiemensStiftung, le Kaaitheater consacre, dans le cadre du festival SpOkEN WORLD, unerecherche théâtrale sur laforce du discours, tant sur le plan de la forme que ducontenu. Ces forces qui peu-vent mener une collectivitévers la guerre ou vers la paix,vers « le bien » ou vers « le mal ». Que le texte soitrédigé au préalable ouimprovisé, la prononciationd’un discours se déroule tou-jours dans un contexte pré-cis, dans un ici et maintenantparticulier — exactementcomme au théâtre. Quelqu’undonne forme à un discours,tandis que le public écoute — exactement comme authéâtre. À l’occasion de SpOkEN WORLD, des créateursde théâtre de tous les conti-nents créent chacun unspectacle qui examine leurrelation au discours et lessituent dans leur propre contexte politique et culturel.
ENIn 2009, Barack Obama tookthe White House by storm onthe basis of the slogan Yes,we can plus a number ofcompelling speeches. Inevery age, country and cultu-re, and in every societal con-text — from the most demo-cratic to the most dictatorial— speeches have been one ofthe most important drivingforces in the political func-tioning of states and commu-nities. In SpOkEN WORLD, theKaaitheater, together withthe Siemens Stiftung, will be devoting theatricalresearch to the formal andsubstantive forces behind thespeech. Forces that can leada community to war orpeace, to ‘good’ or to ‘evil’.Whether it is written before-hand or improvised on thespot, a speech is alwaysgiven in a specific context, ina ‘here and now’ — just as inthe theatre. Someone givesshape to an argument whilean audience listens — just as in the theatre. Theatre makers from several conti-nents will be creating a performance for SpOkEN WORLDin which they examine their relationship with the speechgiven and make a space for it in their own political andcultural context.

Leurshistoires respectives s’entre-lacent en un seul discours,prononcé par trois artistes.••• La Néerlandaise Nicolinevan Harskamp (1975) analysedans son œuvre la fonction et le pouvoir du discours. À l’aide d’enregistrements deconversations, de discours et de débats, elle écrit desscénarios pour ses vidéos etperformances en public. En2009, elle a gagné le Prix deRome aux Pays-Bas.

EN In a festival that concen-trates on the word, the choreographer and performerEleanor Bauer will set up aparliament without wordstogether with students fromPARTS.
In the first part, calledSpeaking to/from/with/of TheObject, each member of theparliament gives a wordlessspeech to an object. In thisinstance, Bauer starts outfrom the observation that, by the decisions it takes, parliament actually changesphysical ‘objects’: people,roads, buildings, weapons,money, etc.
In the second part, Speakingto/from/with/of The Assembly,all the objects are removed.Without anything, any thing,not a thing to discuss, it isabout communication itself.The starting point for this is the setting aside of the context of the parliament with its fixed structure andrules, and the development of a new sort of language.

Eind jaren 1950 maakteAmiri Baraka (1934), toen bek-end onder zijn oorspronkelijkenaam LeRoi Jones, naam alsbeat poet. Hij was een com-pagnon de route van AllenGinsberg e.a. Baraka inspireer-de o.a. The Last Poets, devaders van de hiphop.
Saul Williams (1972) isenkele generaties jonger eneen van de krachtigste stem-men van de alternatieve hip-hop. Hij is actief als dichter,schrijver, muzikant, acteur en filmmaker. Het album SaulWilliams (2004) zorgde vooreen muzikale doorbraak hierte lande. Hij werkte samenmet DJ Spooky en met hetgerenommeerde Arditti StringQuartet.

A BOOk ON kRiS vERDONck’S ‘END’EN During the post-performance talk on 6/12 we will present “Listen to the bloodymachine! Creating Kris Verdonck’s ‘End’”. The book is an attempt to document anddescribe the making-process of ‘End’ (2008) by Kris Verdonck. It contains inter-views with all the collaborators, a rehearsal diary, the full performance text, photo-graphs, technical drawings, a DVD with a trailer of the show, etc. It is made byMarianne Van Kerkhoven (Kaaitheater) who was the dramaturge of the production,in collaboration with dramaturge-trainee Anoek Nuyens, and published by Inter-national Theatre & Film Books and the Research Centre Theatre Making Processes(Utrecht School of the Arts).

Samen maken zeeen delirante ready-madevoorstelling.••• Mapa Teatro is eengezelschap uit Bogotá. In hunvoorstellingen zoomen ze inop de vaak absurde werke-lijkheid van het dagelijkseleven in Colombia. Broer enzus Heidi en Rolf Abderhal-den, die de groep 25 jaar geleden oprichtten, makenwerk op het kruispunt vanbeeldende kunst en theater.Als vertrekpunt voor hunvoorstellingen kiezen ze thea-terteksten van bv. Ens’inspirant des notes mythi-ques d’Escobar, le MapaTeatro réalise un spectacleparadoxal sur la dépénalisa-tion de la drogue. Documentset témoignages authentiquess’imbriquent dans la fiction.Un spécialiste de la rhétori-que politique et un expert ducommerce des stupéfiants etde sa violence sont flanquésde musiciens de Medellín.Ensemble, ils concoctent un spectacle ready-made délirant.••• Mapa Teatro est une com-pagnie de Bogotá. In hunwerk onderzoeken zij hoe wealles – sociale en politiekeitems, maar ook alledaagsegebeurtenissen – ervaren alsverhalen. In hun nieuwe pro-ject benaderen zij ‘spraak’ als een gesprek dat geenwaarheid claimt en dus nietgaat over iets maar zich altijdricht tot iemand. Het is eenspreken dat tot spreken uit-nodigt, dat ons eraan herin-nert dat het door onszelfwordt voortgebracht. Het iseen spreken dat de vraagoproept: ‘Als iemand op eenonbewoond eiland vrijuit zouspreken, zou die het dan nogaltijd bij het verkeerde eindhebben?’

Dans leurs spectacles, ils analysent lamanière dont nous vivons les choses – les questionssociales et politiques, maisaussi les événements quoti-diens – en tant que récit. Dans leur nouveau projet, ilsapprochent le « langage »comme un discours qui nerevendique pas la vérité et netraite donc pas d’un sujet,mais s’adresse toujours àquelqu’un. Un discours quiinvite au discours et nous rap-pelle que nous le produisons.Un discours qui soulève laquestion : « Si quelqu’un surune île déserte parlait libre-ment, serait-il encore à côtéde la question ? »

Op de grens tussenpuber – adolescent – volwas-sene hebben ze alvast éénding gemeen: ze dromen. Over wat? Dat gaat alle kan-ten uit. Ze schuwen de grotemaatschappelijke en politiekethema’s niet. Ook persoon-lijke idealen vinden hun wegop het podium. Het geweldtegen vrouwen in Afrika wordtaangevochten, oude politiekekrokodillen zetten ze in hunhemd, of ze dromen van demuziek als taal die alle ande-re overstijgt. Ze doen eenappel aan koppels om te durven vechten voor eenrelatie, ze hekelen het gebrekaan een consequent strijdenvoor het milieu of stellen netde scheiding tussen cultuuren natuur in vraag,…Het geloof in de eigen over-tuiging is groter dan deschroom om en plein publicop een podium te kruipen.Regisseur Dirk Verstocktcoacht hun grote mond enbegeleidt hen zowel in hetschrijven als in het speechen.Een ding is zeker: om eennieuwe, geëngageerde gener-atie speechers en debaterszitten we hier niet verlegen.

FR 12 jeunes Bruxellois detous les coins de la ville et dumonde prennent la parole. Le plus jeune a 15 ans, le plusâgé, 25. (Pré)adolescents oujeunes adultes, ils partagentau moins une chose : ilsrêvent. De quoi ? Cela va dans tous les sens, et ils necraignent pas les grandsthèmes politiques ou sociaux.Mais ils montent aussi sur les planches pour défendredes idéaux personnels. Ainsi, ils dénoncent les violencesinfligées aux femmes enAfrique, raillent les vieuxcrocodiles de la politique ourêvent de langage musical qui transcenderait tous lesautres. Ils invitent les couplesà oser se battre pour sauverleur relation, fustigent l’ab-sence de lutte conséquentepour l’environnement etremettent en question la distinction entre nature et culture…La foi en ses propres convic-tions supplante la timidité demonter sur scène et prendrela parole en public. Le met-teur en scène Dirk Verstocktcanalise leur impertinence etles accompagne tant dans larédaction que dans la pronon-ciation de leurs discours. Cequi est certain : nous n’avonspas à rougir d’une nouvellegénération d’orateurs et dedébatteurs engagés.
