John was a young man in hospital

communion after Mass.
I opened the pyx and saw that the top
host was cracked when I have previously
closed the lid. I placed this host in his

Dear Parents and Members of our Sacred Heart School community, At Sacred Heart we believe in the education of the whole child – spiritually (as we are a Catholic school), academically (as we are a school), physically, emotionally, socially – every little bit of the child so that, with support they become an integrated ‘whole’. Starting next week, we will begin holding our parent and child nights centred on the topic of Human Sexuality. In doing so I acknowledge the vital and primary role that you play as parents in the education of our children about their sexuality. I also acknowledge that this can be a difficult area for many parents, mainly to do with our own hang-ups, embarrassments and uncertainty of what to say and how to say it. Human sexuality is a vital area for all children to grow in their knowledge and understanding. It is who they are, why they think and act the way they do, and how their bodies will grow and develop as they mature into the adolescent. And whilst it is a very personal area for you to work on with your child, I’m happy that we can offer a series of nights to help you get started. An outline of the program has been sent home and payment and notification of attendance are due by Tuesday this coming week. The program on offer is totally voluntary, but we offer it as a service to support you in the often difficult role of parenting as you too work to develop ‘the whole child’ who is your ever-changing son or daughter. Look forward to seeing you there.

SCIENCE WEEK ACTIVITIES
Today we celebrated Science Week with each class visiting our Science incursion on robots and robotics. The children loved the experience and spent the day very excited by what they saw. It always amazes me when you watch children working scientifically. In Canberra each year our Year 6 students visit a number of science-based venues (Questacon; The Make-it Centre; CSIRO; Canberra Deep Space Centre) and are enthralled at each one. Our incursion today was preceded on Wednesday by the judging of the children’s own robotic constructions. What an amazing array of creations. My thanks to Madonna McGreevy and Marg Concannon (Staff) who organised the day and promoted the scientific world to our children. The next world’s best scientist may already be amongst us – who knows. WORKING BEE – THIS SATURDAY
Have you set this date aside yet? Even for just 1 hour? Under the Hall we have years of accumulated ‘stuff’ – to the point where we can hardly get into the space anymore. TOMORROW from 1 – 5pm we plan to remove the contents from under the Hall and send huge piles off to the trash, or a worthy cause if it’s deemed to be in good enough condition. So, what we still need is many hands to carry the contents out to the front lawn to be sorted, and the worthwhile stuff to be retained and re-stored. Due to the nature of the work this is an ADULT’S ONLY Working Bee. Please come along to help. If every family gave just 1 hour of time we’d have over 190 hours of work completed – more than enough to complete the job in one go. Look forward to seeing a crowd of willing helpers ready to go. CATHOLIC COLLEGES’ MUSIC FESTIVAL
Last Friday our choirs attended the Queensland Catholic College’s Music Festival. Congratulations to our three choirs – Year 3 Choir, Year 4 Choir, and Senior Choir on their performances and for the Silver and Bronze Awards they obtained through their efforts. As I suspected, all our students were great ambassadors and ‘did us proud’. They are to be congratulated. SACRED HEART OLYMPICS
As the Olympics come to a close, so too do the Olympic activities at Sacred Heart. This week we’ve had a ball, especially when we got to play with water bomb balloons in a test of skill and luck all mixed into one. And then today we had the jazziest Olympic outfits warn to school. Thanks to the kids for getting into the spirit of the activities. It should be an event to remember. BOOK WEEK
Next week is Children’s Book Week, and for us an opportunity to get celebrate the wonder of books and assorted literature in our lives. On Thursday there is our annual ‘dress up’ day as the children come dressed in the theme ‘Australia: Story Country’. We also use this day as one of our Pastoral days, whereby we group the children in mixed-age groups as they undertake a series of activities based on the Book Week theme. These days allow us to build student connectedness throughout the school so that as a community of students they work together. My thanks to Lytia Gilbey for her organisation of the day’s activity. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
There is only one corner of the Universe you can be certain of improving, and that is your own self. (Aldous Huxley) Wishing you a great week as we work together for the benefit of our children. Sincerely

Yesterday our Prep to Year 2 students gathered in the church for a Liturgy of the Word. The message from the Gospel was the question Jesus asks us “Who do you say I am?” When we broke open the word we heard that Jesus is one who is KIND, JUST, PEACEFUL, COMPASSIONATE, GENEROUS FROM THE HEART, WISE, UNDERSTANDING AND LOVING. During the liturgy we took our time to learn about each part of the ritual and I explained to the students some of the prime features of the altar and what they mean to us as we gather to worship in the Church. I was especially proud of the many students who were given the opportunity to read. May I take this opportunity to thank all teachers who prepared the students to read. Finally, thanks to Mrs Maureen Cullip and her Year 6 class for assisting with beautiful song “Our God is a Great Big God”. In the coming weeks I am looking forward to the Year 4 Retreat. This will be a day reflecting on the pioneers of the Catholic Church in Queensland. We will also be having our annual Sleep-Out for the Homeless on Friday 2nd September at St Kieran’s School in Brighton. We also have our Father’s Day Breakfast followed by a Liturgy of the Word. Our Parish School Mass will be held on the evening of Sunday 11th September at 5:00pm followed by a pizza meal. There will be more information on these upcoming events soon.

Testament to describe God’s nature”.

Next week is QUEENSLAND ROAD SAFETY WEEK commencing Monday 22nd August. During the week you may like to have a conversation with your children regarding the necessity to keep themselves and others safe on the road and footpaths. To assist you in your conversations, you might like to Google BICYCLE ROAD RULES AND SAFETY IN QUEENSLAND. I will be on retreat next week so there will not be news from me. I will keep all in our school Community in prayer during retreat. Have a safe week cycling. Regards, Teresa

LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH (L.O.T.E.) – JAPANESE 日本語
In Japan, Bon (or Obon using the honorific "o") is a holiday during August 12 -16 when the entire country
takes a break to welcome back and appease the souls of ancestors. Each year during Obon it is believed
the ancestors' spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives. Obon is an important family
gathering time for Japanese which is why people return to their home town and most businesses are closed.
On the first day of Obon lanterns are lit and people visit their family graves with flowers and incense and
make offerings of food so their ancestors' spirits are brought back home. In some regions fires are lit at
the entrance of houses to guide the spirits or vegetables are carved into animal shapes and put outside the
door with some incense so that ancestors' spirits ride them between their world and our world. A
cucumber is used for a horse and an eggplant is used for a cow.
People also gather at parks, gardens, shrines or temples wearing yukata (summer kimono) and dance around
a stage to entertain and welcome back the spirits of their ancestors.
On the last day people return their ancestors' spirits to the grave. Fires are sometimes lit at entrances of
houses to send the spirits back. In some regions floating lanterns are put into rivers, lakes and seas in
order to farewell and guide the spirits back into their world, or vegetable animals are taken to the river
bank and left to carry the ancestors home.
The children at school thought this event was similar to Halloween but were disappointed to learn that
Japanese children don't receive lollies. Instead they tried Japanese folk dancing after making paper
candles and paper lanterns.
