BROOKLYN PUBLIC LIBRARY ADULT LEARNING CENTERS provide free innovative educational programs for adult learners and speakers of other languages. Through books, technology and interactive small group instruction taught by professional and friendly instructors and tutors, adults build the skills needed to meet their personal, educational and employment goals.

• Adult Basic Education (ABE): Programs and classes for beginning to advanced level adult readers emphasize basic skills and language competency; classes are self-directed.
• Young Adult Literacy Program (YALP): Provides a wide array of instructional, vocational, job readiness, family support and social services for young adults ages 17 to 24.
• Pre-High School Equivalency (Pre-HSE): Provides preparation classes for adults who speak English and want to improve their reading and math skills in preparation for their HSE exam.
• English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL): Including English conversation practice groups, business English classes and literacy classes for all reading levels.
• College & Career Access: Assistance in planning for the future.
• Business & Career Center: Information on career planning, job searches, personal finance and more!
BPL Adult Learning Centers also offer free programs on basic computer training, health literacy and citizenship preparation, among others. Programs and classes are available mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Contact us for more information.

Volunteer Literacy Tutors assist adults learning to read and write through small group instruction. Prospective tutors attend a 20-hour Literacy Volunteer Tutor Training to gain an understanding of the Literacy Program philosophy and fundamentals of reading and writing instruction.
