Membership A question was received from the floor as to the change in membership numbers given the changeover in the renewal system from mail to online. JF responded that numbers remained static and membership remained a challenge for the management committee. Entry Fee JF spoke to the need to administer entry fees given the reduction in QRU and ARU funding. Brothers is unique in that it has a relatively secured ground. Other clubs are not able to charge because they cannot restrict entry. Management committee intends to make it convenient for opposing teams with passes for admission of players, coaches and support staff. Juniors The Management Committee continues to work with the Junior Club, particularly Hans Pearson, with a view to their continued occupancy pursuant to a lease. Merger has been discussed as a possible topic but isn’t something which will happen in the immediate or near future.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Firstly at the end of my tenure it is pleasing to me that Brothers Rugby Club has completed the year with a healthy profit and considerable funds in the bank. I am also personally proud of the infrastructure improvements that have occurred over the last several years and acknowledge the support of the Brisbane City Council, the State Government, Guy Ledwidge, Peter Lavin, Jim Gorman and numerous donors who made the improvements possible. Sometimes we got lucky with funding from the lessor, and Government grants and sometimes the achievements were the result of hard work, but the common factor in most of the infrastructure projects was the generous contributions of those indicated above. Brothers Junior Rugby Union Club also contributed, firstly to the upkeep of the playing fields, sharing the costs with this Club, and contributing an amount to the funding of the lights. There was a good deal of work put in by committee members and volunteers to ensure that, whilst out share of funding of special projects was raised, the ordinary business of the Club and its insatiable appetite for funds continued without major hiccup. The efforts of most of the committee attest to their commitment to see the Club grow and be successful. In particular Des Hogan (although officially retired) Paul French and Tony Lalor have been a tower of strength. Matt Kaye is also to be congratulated for this hard work and dedication. The last act of the committee for 2015 was the completion of the merger through the successful passing of resolutions to give effect to that move. The agreement for merger required the cooperation of the Junior Club, firstly to agree at committee level, and then to convince members of the merits of such a move. Their committee, along with that of this club, should be congratulated for achieving success. All that is required to complete this momentous step is to receive approval of our application for merger at the appropriate level of Government. Success on the field is probably the more important measure of success, though it is arguable on-field success and administrative success go hand-in-hand. With only one premiership, in the Normanby Cup, for the year, disappointment maybe the expected sentiment. Sure there was disappointment on Grand Final day but there was also a feeling of some pride in the overall achievements of all teams. Only Brisbane Division 3rd & 4th Grades, Premier Colts and the Normanby Cup 2 side failed to make the finals, an improvement on the previous year and testament to the improvement across the ranks. In addition we managed third place in the Doughty Shield, an award that is steadily losing its significance as further divisions are added to accommodate the registered players at Queensland University. The lower divisions of Brisbane Grades are difficult and success depends largely on the recruitment result and the retention of players in the first year after a player completes under-nineteen. We can work harder in this area. The successful teams contested finals with mixed results. Premier Grade were unlucky to fall to the eventual premiers Souths in the knock out final, but the other teams advanced with Premier Grade, Brisbane Division 1st Grade, and Colts 2 contesting grand finals all without success. The contests were close and all teams played with real heart and made their supporters proud. The brand of football played and the competitiveness of Premier Grade resulted in a good number of deserving players being picked to NRC in the Queensland sides and for the Melbourne Rebels. These

Page 10: BROTHERS OLD BOYS’ RUGBY CLUB · 2019. 3. 19. · BROTHERS RUGBY CLUB (INC.) Facere et Docere . 94th. ANNUAL REPORT and FINANCIAL STATEMENT 2015 . THE 111th SEASON . With the merger

players have been named elsewhere in this report but it is my pleasure to congratulate each and every one of you, and in particular those who ended the season with contracts to play professionally in future. The football year ended with an awards night that promises to be the forerunners of much future enjoyable and entertaining such nights in the years to come. It has taken a few years to establish an event that does real credit to the Club and allows a celebration of the year that is enjoyable for more than just the players who participate. I congratulate Matt and the leadership group for the big strides made to get to this level of event – don’t regress. There were some big efforts during the year which earn mention. The Fund-raising Committee led by Tony Lalor set a record for the Test lunch; thanks to the efforts of Ben McCormack and a dedicated committee the Ladies day was also a record; and the Hobbits and the BBQ boys ensured that the funds raised on match days was a record. We should also applaud Imagetec and its representatives Wade Ranson and tom Ritchie who have been major sponsors for nine years. Both wade and Tom have departed Imagetec and the sponsorship won’t be renewed for 2016 unfortunately both men will continue as proud supporters of the Club. All of the other sponsors are congratulated on ensuring that the financial success mentioned above can be claimed. The next year will present challenges, particularly, for Matt Kaye who has proved an excellent administrator, but now takes on management of a number of several staff and will have to learn the disciplines required to ensure value for money, and for the committee as it balances the requirements and expectations of the Junior and Senior groups in one entity whilst ensuring the culture developed in the senior group becomes the continuing culture of the whole club. It is disappointing for me not to continue at the helm during the next year when practical, well-considered decisions will be required to ensure the new Club will build on the advances made steadily over the years since the financial troubles of some fifteen or so years ago. I will take some personal pride in the knowledge that I have been able, supported by diligent committee members, able administrators and really supportive volunteers, to continue to improve the Club in the manner achieved before me. The awarding of a life membership for my efforts will be a lasting pleasure.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT

In 2015 Brothers Rugby Club has again provided a number of highlights and disappointments but as a whole the club is in a much stronger position than this time last year. At the end of the 2014 season we identified the need to improve the clubs culture from Premier Grade to Colts 2. A leadership group undertook specialist training to identify and shape the clubs future setting values and behaviours. I would like to thank Club Captain Tom Sayer for his support throughout the year and driving the improved behaviours of many. We still have a way to go but we are heading in the right direction. The clubs mission to provide a pathway for players, coaches, managers and staff to professional rugby was evident again this year with a number of people representing the club at various levels. I would like to congratulate the following players who played representative football in 2015; Queensland Reds – Sam Greene, James O’Connor, Karmichael Hunt, Queensland U20 – Pat James, Angus Fowler, Jake Lyon Australian Barbarians – Ben Hyne, Sam Hyne, Jake Lyon NRC – Matt Mafi, Ben Hyne, Luke Beauchamp, Pierce Fitzgerald, Tom Moloney, Karmichael Hunt, Taniela Tupou, Criff Tupou, Pat James, James O’Connor, Sam Greene, The season kicked off on Saturday 7th March with a away match against Wests and concluded on Sunday 2nd August. The club would like to congratulate all players, coaches, managers and volunteers for their efforts throughout the year in particular those teams that progressed to the finals. Below is a breakdown of final team standings after the Home & Away Season. Premier Grade was competitive throughout the season however unfortunately lost a couple of matches by less than 3 points. Premier Reserves and 1st Grade were both dominant during the regular season only losing 3 matches on the way to the finals. Unfortunately both teams suffered heart breaking losses in Grand Finals. The remaining grades performed admirably with 7 out of 10 teams taking part in the finals series. Special mention must go to the FireAnts who won the Normanby Cup competition. The results from the entire club were a major improvement from previous years and as a result 2016 looks to be promising. There is a good mix of experience and enthusiasm throughout the club and premierships are just around the corner. The preparation for season 2016 has begun; Carl Marshall has been appointed Premier Grade Head Coach succeeding Anthony Mathison who stepped down from the role. Recruitment and retention has been a major focus as we continue to build depth within the club. The Elite Development Squad will continue to provide a pathway for the younger players, while a structured Strength & Conditioning program will have the players in a greater physical shape for the season.

I would like to thank the club sponsors for their support throughout the year; your investment in the club has assisted in the improved culture and environment at Brothers. We will continue to work hard in 2016 to provide a good offering to sponsors where they can see brand exposure and business support from our members. We club conducted a number of fund raising events throughout 2015 which included the State of the Union Luncheon, Ladies Day, Rugby World Cup Luncheon and the annual Crosby Sevens Tournament. All these events were well attended and raised some much needed funds for the club. We also had a number of smaller events throughout the season including Tour Matches against Christchurch Rugby Club & Lloyds Rugby Club, Battle of the Bush in Roma against Wests and Old Boys Day at Crosby Park against traditional rivals University. Finally I would like to thank the committee in particular Jim & Des for their continued support, the coaches and managers who make my job easier throughout the season and the players for their efforts during a tough season.

VALE

Iosefo Bele Tabalala RIP Sat 21 March 2015

It was a difficult Saturday morning for the Telecom Fiji Warriors as tight head prop Iosefo Bele Tabalala was discovered dead in his Southern Cross Hotel room. Bele was discovered motionless by roommate Leeroy Atalifo. The fireman attempted to revive Bele and also notified the medical team. According to FRU, his roommate and medical team in camp tried everything to revive him yesterday while waiting for emergency services to arrive. He was then rushed to the CWM Hospital, however all efforts by the hospital team failed to revive him. Team manager Dan Domoni said Bele was up about the previous night and even performed an item which had brought the roof down. “As part of the night activity, players were to do an item to show the other side of a rugby player. He was a happy fellow and he made his teammates laugh,” he added.

Fiji Times 22 March 2015

The Club has renamed the Patron’s Trophy for Rookie of the Year to the Iosefo Bele Tabalala Memorial Trophy for Rookie of the Year in honour of a True Brothers Man. Our great friend “Bellsie” passed away in his sleep whilst on International duties with the Fiji Warriors rugby team, in his native Fiji. “Bellsie” won this very award back in 2011 in his first year at the Club and he quickly became a Crosby Park favourite.

CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT

As another rugby season draws to a close, it goes without saying – what a cracker!

At the beginning of the year the club, under the guidance of Execforce pioneered a leadership programme over a 2 month period. Shaping us for what was to come. This initiative was extremely positive for the direction of the club at a player level and also at a committee level – I look forward to the future and the inroads we create.

The commitment from the coaching staff and managers is something which always goes unnoticed. The week in week out preparation put in is tireless and cannot be thanked enough. Although he is unable to be here tonight, I would like to wish Tony Mathison every success as he pursues a coaching roll over seas and thank you for the last few years and the knowledge you bought to our game.

To the team at junction road, from a club level and personal level – you guys are amazing! The professionalism that you bring to our game is outstanding. Thank you for keeping us in one piece. I would like to congratulate Gina Nelson on her selection as the Brisbane City Physio, well done.

March twenty first was a sad day for brothers. This is the day we lost a brother! Bellsy was a true gentleman on and off the field and a most humble human with a gentle soul. It was an absolute pleasure and an honour to have been able to pack down with you. Forever in our hearts and forever our brother, thank you for giving us some great memories.

With seven teams in the finals series this year, four of which playing in grand finals. I would like to congratulate Colts 2, First Grade, Reserve Grade and the Fire Ants squads on securing these births. Last Friday night saw the dynasty that is the Ants bring home our only piece of silverware for 2015, congratulations to Tony Andrews and the lads for a great season and an outstanding final. It was great to be able to see you guys succeed.

A rugby club cannot run without the help of volunteers! The efforts put in throughout the year are astronomical, from people setting up the fields in the morning, to the hobbits in the can bar and cooking the BBQ. You would all agree with me that everyone looks forward to scrolling through social media on a Saturday night to peruse through a plethora of pictures taken over the afternoon. Thanks goes to John Sayer for giving up his time each week to make this possible. Thank you for the endless and tireless efforts put in from Matt Kaye and the committee.

Thank you for the financial supports and investments put in willingly from out sponsors it is something that cannot be any more appreciated. It is great to see an array of new signs on the field this year, I look forward to growing our partnerships for years to come.

A huge congratulation goes to all the boys on making representative teams in 2015. Your commitment to the game is something you should be proud of! The club is very proud of your success.

To all the lads! I cannot thank you enough. Without the players there is no BROTHERS! The passion and commitment that is exuded from you guys is second to none. I get no better feeling of pride and satisfaction than being able to train, play and have a couple of rums after a game than what I do when I can do it at brothers, with my mates. Thank you!

As the whistle blows for full time of the 2015 season, it is with great excitement that we begin our preparations for 2016. Exceeding our success on and off the field from this year. Thank you, again for a great year in the butcher strip! I hope you all enjoy the evening and I look forward to seeing you back again for a great season next year.

All the best. Tom Sayer

TEAM REPORTS

Premier “A” Grade Semi-Finalists, Holders of Pilecki-Shaw Cup & Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield

The 2015 Queensland Premier Rugby season saw the continued development of the Premier squad and demonstrated the enormous wealth of talent at the club. Ultimately, the Brothers Premier Grade team exited the competition after a last-minute 33-35 defeat to eventual Premiers Souths in the Minor Semi-final; however, significant progress continued throughout the season, which should enable Brothers to contend for Premierships in future seasons. On the field, the team strived to play an expansive brand of attacking rugby, resulting in the Premier Grade team leading the competition for points scored, 4-try bonus points achieved and point’s differential at the end of the home and away season. Additionally, Brothers recorded the 2nd best defensive record in the competition following significant improvement in this area during the latter part of the season. While the main goal of winning a Premiership was not achieved in 2015, the underlying talent and ability of this group suggests that success is not far away. Season 2015 proved to be one of mixed emotions and extreme highs and lows for all involved. The devastating passing of Iosefo ‘Bells’ Tabalala shocked all involved with the club and encouraged all of us to reflect on what is important about rugby and life - his humble demeanour and good humour will remain with those of us who were lucky enough to know him well into the future. Following the tragic news, two early season losses in injury time to Sunnybank and Easts galvanised the group for the remainder of the season and led to a determined resolve that saw Brothers gather excellent momentum through the middle stages of the season. A clear example of this momentum and resolve was on display during a ruthless 68-22 win over GPS at Crosby Park near the end of the season. Once again, many significant individual achievements need to be noted. Sam Greene’s consistent performances during the season saw him finish as the competition’s leading point scorer after amassing 193 points, while Mitchell Felsman was the competition’s leading try scorer crossing for 12 tries. Additionally, 10 players made their Premier Grade debuts for Brothers during the 2015 season, along with a number of representative achievements by Brothers players at Reds, U20 and NRC level in 2015, including several representatives in the championship winning Brisbane City team. Finally, I wish to make mention of the massive effort throughout the year from everyone involved with the Premier Grade Program, including the players. Without the significant contributions of Premier Coaches Carl Marshall and Ben McCormack, team manager Anthony McDermott and his team of support staff, and the medical staff, particularly Gina Nelson and Ian Astbury, the squad would not have enjoyed their rugby as much as they did or been as successful as they were. Also, the support from all involved on the Brothers Committee, including President Jim Frayne, and from the Director of Rugby, Matt Kaye, was greatly appreciated and ensured that Brothers delivered a Premier Grade program that was the envy of most clubs in Australia and will continue to be so over the coming seasons.

The 2015 season started with high expectations with a much stronger playing roster and fantastic numbers at training.

The opening game of the season against West was close fought right up to the last play but poor decision making cost us a loss of 19 -23. The second game of the season at home to Sunnybank was a loss by 10 points 15 -25.

Then followed a 42 -12 win over Logan City the reigning premiers. Our season had kicked off with wins over North’s 86-0, GPS 38 -3, Easts 27-13, University 19 -12. Round nine we played competition leaders South’s for a hard fought 20 – 14 win. Round ten we played new competition leaders Wests for a narrow 11-6 win. Then wins over Sunnybank 18-5, Logan City 18 – 5, North’s 50- 0, GPS 47 – 14, Easts 43 – 0, University 16 – 13 followed.

Fifteen straight wins to become Minor Premiers with one game left in the season. Injuries in the higher grades finally took its toll a weakened but never say die team went down to South’s 20 – 10.

We scored 480 points for the season an average of 30 points per game and had only 167 points scored against us an average of 10.5 points per game. Matt Kaye’s final words in his Thursday night team talk were always “defence will win us the competition” proved to be correct.

Bring on the finals. University at Ballymore was a close fought game for sixty minutes then we piled on the points six tries, three conversions and two penalty goals 45 -15.

Grand final day. Every sporting cliché could be used to describe how the team played for seventy-three minutes with one player down to loose 15 – 18. As always a large number of players played 1st grade and the coaching staff would like to thank them for the efforts. In particular those players from 2nd grade that sat on the bench and congratulations to those that progressed to higher grades.

The manager John Diamond for always having the jumpers, snakes, Gatorade and team sheets organized a big thank you. To our support staff that strapped and treated our injured players thank you.

To our awards winners, Niko Bueta, David Corbenici and Dom Daunt congratulations.

Thank you finally to the coaches Matt Kaye and Manny Cole-Manolis for their hard work.

A final cliché. This team was an exceptional group of young men who showed character, determination and pride. They made us proud to be “The Filth”.

Brisbane – 2nd Grade Preliminary Finalists, Holders of Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield

Season 2015 started well with a great pre season and commitment from a large 1st/2nd Grade squad for all pre season trials. It left us with a very balanced and experienced group of players with a good mix of Colts that had moved into the grades.

We started the season with a dominate performance against West, showing the season ahead could be very promising. As the weeks went by we continued to develop as a team building momentum whilst continuing to win games both at home and away. This strong start ensured we finished round 1 on top of the table undefeated.

With some standouts in Round 1, Alex Skippen, Cam Massie, Jesse Brown, Mitch Copeman, Mark Matthies before suffering a Hamstring injury and Lewis Lilley. With Michael Duhig away on Test duty with the Philippines Luke Rance filled in and performed well.

Round 2 provided us with some real challenges as we started to feel the injury curse of Grades football. We lost a couple of tight games against Sunny Bank & Norths. But we saved a best performance for the year for GPS on Jack Ross Oval with a comprehensive 52-7 win. We started the last 2 games of the year with a lot of 3rd grade players asked to set up and they performed well in 2 tight losses to Uni & potential Premiers South’s.

We finished the regular season 4th on 52 points.

Minor Semi Final: Brothers 17 def Norths 16 With a slow start to the game we found ourselves down at half time after with only 15% of the ball. We started the second half playing more direct and physical and started to turn the momentum of the game we Secord 2 tries after sustained build up of phases. We exchanged penalties in the last 10 minutes and managed to hit the lead and hang on. Special mention for his man of the match performance has to go to Billy Thompson.

Preliminary Final: Brothers 15 University 17

Well the boys saved their gutsiest performance for this one. Despite not being rewarded for a dominate set piece. The team dug deep to play in what was one of the best games of the year a real finals performance. In the end they left everything on field and came away with a 2 point loss.

Big thanks also goes to our leadership Group of captains William Leal, Michael Duhig as well as club stalwart Adrian Dixon, whose experience and knowledge was of great benefit to all players. Also in their ability to cut through and communicate our philosophy with the playing group.

Unfortunately the year finished with a loss in the Preliminary final. To finish the season 4th on the ladder was a great improvement from last year’s result of finishing 6th. Best Forward: Alex Skippen Best Back: Mitch Copeman Best & Fairest: Jesse Brown Other standout players of note from the season; Cam Massie, Michael Gilbert, Mark Matthies, Dan Conahan, Ben Doxey

The introduction of the squad pre season for 1st & 2nd grade this year was of great benefit as it developed a real squad mentality within the group as players moved back and forth it created less concern or friction and allowed each team to just get on with it and moved forward week to week. With the continuation of this and the talent developed this year I’m sure that we will continue to have success with in the grades.

Brisbane - 3rd Grade Holders of Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield

2015 was a year filled with promise and defeat for the Brothers 3rd grade team. Missing out of the finals by one win. The boys in the Brothers 3rd Grade put in a big effort with winning 5 games and losing 7 games. Most of the loses were tight, but we did suffer a major defeat in our season. Throughout the season we used up to 40 players, with 5 of these guys playing every week. A mention to Keith Tan, Sam Phuong and Jed Davis the winning of the 3rd Grade awards. A special mention to at Goddard and Col Carmody who both sustained season ending injuries in the last few weeks, I hope your recovery is speedy. As this was my first year coaching at Brothers, it was a great first team to coach, I learnt a lot about coaching and being on the other side of the footy team. It is different to being a player as you can't just get out there and try to encourage the team to step up by using your actions. I had to try to instil into players what I needed them to do on the field. Special thanks to John Burton who decided to hang up the boots this year to help me out coaching. The time and effort you put in to help me was amazing. Thank you to Geoff Davy for helping out with training drills and pre game warm up. David Ingham the manager thank you for organising the team.

What a fantastic year for Brothers Colts Rugby in 2015. Colts 1 coached / managed by Wayne Mackie and Blair Hart finished the regular season in fourth place which was our goal from the beginning of the year. So to achieve this was a massive feather in the cap of all involved. Due to the success we had throughout the year our goal grew with a focus on raising that cup at the end of year at Ballymore. Unfortunately we fell ever so close bowing out of the qualifying final in third position which was an amazing achievement and credit to the boys. The season that was all started when we knocked off the eventual premiers Sunnybank at Crosby 26 – 7. This set a platform of determination and grit that would drive our season and set the standard to be expected of the Brothers Colts 1 side. The first round saw the team win 4 from 7 games and be in third position on table. As the season wore on with wins and losses Brothers Colts 1 finished the regular season with a win loss recorded of 8 & 6 from 14 games with a for and against of 418/208. This was a great achievement and has now set the bar for the future colts that will come through the club. Our finals campaign started ever so strong with a convincing win against Bond University at Ballymore. Unfortunately through numerous injuries carried in and on the day our qualifying final against Sunnybank ended in a loss and the resulting in the end of what was an amazing season. This year a large number of Colts 1 players were promoted into the Premier Colts team which was great to see and a deserved reward for the hard work and effort the boys put in. Special mention goes to our individual award winners who were as always ever consistent and a real asset to the Brothers Colts program. Best Player – Elliot Thompson Best Forward – Will Wilson Best Back – Lewis Harper

It was extremely pleasing to see the Brothers Colts as a group have such a successful year on and off the field. With greater support throughout 2016, I can see the colts program develop into the backbone of Brothers Rugby at Crosby. Thanks for a great year!

Brisbane - Colts 2 Grand Finalists, Holders of Flynn-Lewis Memorial Shield

The Colts 2 team had a very successful season both on and off the field this year. We once again had significant numbers throughout the season, many times we had over 15 players on the reserve bench. I would like to commend all the players on their understanding of our rule that if you attended training you get game time. There were many occasions where perhaps we could have won a game more clearly or finished it in a more dominant position but changes were made to make sure all young men enjoyed a game of rugby.

We were able to finish the regular season in 2nd position and progressed directly to the final with a very dominant semi final win over University. Unfortunately on Grand Final day we perhaps did not scale the heights of our previous two games against University and went down in a close fought contest 25-19. Our conduct as Brothers Rugby men on the field was exemplary this year both in victory and defeat and I can personally testify that these young lads celebrated in the true Brothers tradition.

I would like to specifically thank Dan Dalton, forwards coach, for his enthusiasm, his time and his energy. Watching Dan join in the team run Monday nights, I did wonder if he really has left his playing days behind him. Well done Dan. Further to this I would like to thank our newest Life Member Dennis “Rugby” O’Rourke as our long term mentor and “Colts Godfather” for his continuing and largely unrecognised efforts. I would also like to mention those gentlemen that were kitted up on Grand Final day and through the semi final, who unfortunately did not take the field due to the replacement restrictions applied during finals time. We were unable to rotate and play our full playing roster as we did during the regular season. For their patience and understanding I thank them. I would like to single out Brad Olsson for a very well earnt and well deserved congratulations. Brad was never late for a training session or game and attended every training session during the year. Surely a unique feat in Colts 2 rugby. Well done Brad.

To those having their last game of Colts rugby I wish your well in the future rugby years. I hope that you have enjoyed this year and that you continue your association with this great club.

QSRU Division 5 – Normanby Cup (2) “Friday Night Filth”

With summer just about over and a promising debut by the first 9 plus one at the Bondi 10s the call went out for players for the 2015 Friday night season, a total of 13 old friends and a couple of new chums turned up at Crosby park for a beer and a sausage sizzle and draw up a plan of attack. With the first match upon us numbers would be a problem, it is at this stage I would like to thank the lower grade players that came out and helped throughout the year. For without them we would not have been able to field a team. Our first game was full of promise then injury struck 2 key players (gone for the season) but it would take round 8 for us to get our first win and what a win it was, It will be passed done in folk lore as a brave 13 brothers players with the Moore family supplying 4 brothers or nearly one third of the team to defeated a full strength side with 10 reserves.

Joey Moore, John Moore, Danny Moore, Paddy Moore Injuries and lack of numbers were the order of the season that had stated with so much promise. The players would like to thank Sue, Mikhala and Elli for patching bandaging and keeping the guys on the field. The Legend Ronnie Price for managing (coaching don’t Tell Jude)
