Key Points of Presentation

What is the Response to Intervention (RTI) system?

How does it work with the current special education referral system?

How does Universal Screening assist with RTI?

How can Multitiered Instruction (MTSS), RTI, Universal Screenings and SPED eligibility requirements work together?

Is RTI a legal, valid, and reliable option for identifying students in need of a Individual Education Plan (IEP)?

What is the Response to Intervention (RTI) system?RTI is a systematic process that screens all students as early as possible in a school system.

This assists in prevention of delayed developments and later learning barriers.

It provides preventative, evidence based instruction and intensive interventions as needed.

It is opposite of the wait and see methods of years past.

How does Universal Screening assist with RTI?

Universal screening is considered beginning step or Tier 1 step to the MTSS (Multi-Tiered System).

This opposes the past practices of wait - refer - test - then place option.

Universal Screening seeks to establish preventive evidence of student needs for intervention and potential data processes meeting criteria for IEP services.

Assists families in the confusing process to understand their child’s needs.

By placing emphasis on general education universal screenings and connecting data and information to the nexus of MTSS and IEP processes, we are able to help struggling learners. We can do this early on and it has proven to decline needs for SPED, particularly in upper elementary grades.

SUCCESS!!

Is RTI a legal, valid, and reliable option to best identify students in need?

CHANGE IS INEVITABLE!

I agree with the author, that transitioning and implementing RTI and universal screenings and MTSS is an effect action to intervene and decrease special needs early on in education. I also agree that this process needs further validation, articulation and study to further determine the best changes possible.
