WHAT IS GOOD FOR THE REGION IS GOOD

FOR BRUCE POWER, AND VICE VERSA. IN MY

CAREER, I HAD NEVER EXPERIENCED THE

SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A BUSINESS

AND ITS SURROUNDING COMMUNITY THAT WE

ENJOY, AND I TAKE MY ROLE IN MAINTAINING

THIS POSITIVITY WITH UTMOST SERIOUSNESS.

In my first months as President and

CEO of Bruce Power, I have come to realize

just how important our company is to our

4,200 employees and the communities

within Bruce, Grey and Huron counties.

This passion is on display every time I meet somebody new at work or in the community. People take pride in being associated with Bruce Power, whether directly through employment or indirectly through local organizations we support.

2016 was an historic year for Bruce Power, as we began our Life-Extension Program on Jan. 1. Every dollar of the $400 million we invested in planned maintenance outages this year was done with the long-term viability of the site in mind. Our Life-Extension Program, which will see $13 billion invested in Units 3-8 between now and 2053 – which includes our Major Component Replacement Project from 2020-36 – will ensure our site produces safe, low-cost and carbon-free nuclear electricity for the people of Ontario through 2064.

6

Our long-term agreement with the Province of Ontario ensures generations of jobs on the Bruce site, and across Ontario. It is estimated that Bruce Power’s operations will create and sustain 22,000 jobs annually across the province through to 2064, while injecting $4 billion into the economy annually through the direct and indirect spending on operational equipment, supplies, materials and labour income.

NONE OF THIS COULD BE ACCOMPLISHED

WITHOUT OUR EMPLOYEES, WHO ARRIVE

EVERY DAY POISED TO MAKE A POSITIVE

CONTRIBUTION TO THE SAFE OPERATION

OF OUR EIGHT UNITS AND 2,300-ACRE SITE.

The positive impact of Bruce Power – outside of reliably providing low-cost electricity to consumers – is staggering. We create jobs locally and provincially and we also clean the air we breathe by generating no carbon emissions. We harvest Cobalt-60 from our Bruce B reactors, which is then

used to sterilize 40 per cent of the world’s single-use medical devices, and, in 2016, we collaborated with Nordion to begin producing High-Specific Activity Cobalt, which is used to fight brain tumours.

We are also helping to clean Ontario’s transportation sector by expanding the availability of electric vehicle charging stations in local communities and on school campuses, and we continue to invest over $2 million into non-profit organizations and environmental projects that make our communities a better place to live.

Most importantly, we take great pride in producing low-cost electricity for Ontario businesses and families.

Each one of us is proud of the role we play locally and provincially, and we will do all we can to ensure our children and grandchildren can experience the same pride in being an employee of Bruce Power.

Michael W. Rencheck President and Chief Executive Officer

LIFE- EXTENSION PROGRAM

BRUCE POWER’S LIFE-EXTENSION

PROGRAM BEGAN ON JAN. 1, 2016

Matt Turcotte, Civil Maintenance

12

The Life-Extension Program, which runs from 2016-53, will allow our site to operate through to 2064. During this time we’ll invest $13 billion private dollars into our eight units, which continue to be owned by the people of Ontario.

As part of our Life-Extension, we will also complete Major Component Replacement Projects in Units 3-8 from 2020-36, including incredibly technical equipment swaps. Fortunately, none of the work – or the technology we will use to complete it – will be new to us. All will have been previously completed on our site over the last 14 years, and we’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way, positioning us well to be successful in the future.

IN 2016, WE COMPLETED FIVE PLANNED

MAINTENANCE OUTAGES – INCLUDING A

STATION CONTAINMENT OUTAGE WHICH

SAW ALL BRUCE A UNITS OFFLINE AT THE

SAME TIME – WITH 414 DAYS DEDICATED

TO IMPROVING THE RELIABILITY AND

FUNCTIONALITY OF OUR FACILITIES.

The success of these 2016 outages, which represents a nearly $400 million private investment, will allow our units to be there for the people of Ontario for the months and years to come, providing low-cost, carbon-free and safe electricity every hour of every day.

As the world’s largest operating nuclear facility, we know our every move is being studied as we embark upon this unprecedented Life-Extension Program. We look forward to the challenge, and have no doubt our people will step up and deliver incredible performance when their name is called.

additional jobs will be created and sustained during the Major Component

Replacement Project from 2020-36

5,000

Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program will have positive and long-term economic impact across Ontario, where 90 per cent of the company’s labour and procurement spending occurs.

By undergoing extensive planned maintenance and Major Component Replacement (MCR) Projects from 2016-53, extending the operational life of the site to 2064, Bruce Power will directly and indirectly create and sustain 22,000 jobs annually across the province. This includes $4 billion in annual economic benefit in Ontario through direct and indirect spending on operational equipment, supplies, materials and labour income.

From 2020-36, during the MCR Project that will extend the life of Units 3-8 for an additional 30 years, there will be an additional 5,000 jobs created directly and indirectly; $980 million to $1.2 billion in labour income injected into Ontario’s economy; and $751 million to $1.07 billion in annual economic benefit through equipment, supplies and material purchases both directly and indirectly.

BRUCE POWER’S LIFE-EXTENSION

PROGRAM WILL PROVIDE A MAJOR,

LONG-TERM BOOST FOR ONTARIO’S

ECONOMY AND SKILLED TRADESPEOPLE.

Soon after Bruce Power came to an agreement with the Ontario government to extend the life of the site, the economic benefits were being felt around the province. Procurement contracts with suppliers such as BWXT Inc., Laker Energy, ATS Automation, Nordion and SNC Lavalin guarantees Bruce Power will spend hundreds of millions of dollars for goods and services from these companies (among many others) in the coming months and years, creating and sustaining 22,000 jobs annually across Ontario.

BRUCE, GREY AND HURON COUNTIES

ARE READY TO WELCOME NUCLEAR

COMPANIES TO THEIR COMMUNITIES.

20

The Life-Extension Program means the Bruce Power site will

operate for 40 more years.

2064

Bruce Power and its employees are

not the only ones that benefit from

a healthy, eight-unit site.

The communities within Bruce, Grey and Huron counties – where most of our 4,200 employees and hundreds of contractors live – are also well served by a strong Bruce Power.

The Bruce Power Life-Extension Program, which began Jan. 1, 2016, and runs through 2053, has created an unprecedented opportunity for economic prosperity and growth in the region along Lake Huron. That’s why Bruce Power has partnered with the County of Bruce – an upper-tier municipality of 64,000 residents across eight member municipalities – to create an economic development and innovation initiative, which will leverage economic opportunities for local communities during the site’s multi-year, multi-billion investment programs.

A jointly funded Business Investment Specialist position was established to create a single interface to facilitate a range of economic development and innovation ideas from companies that work with Bruce Power. This position will assist companies as they look to open satellite offices in the area, hire local people and invest in our local communities.

Given the large-scale investment, training and job creation opportunities of the investment program, it was important to establish a consolidated, coordinated approach to economic development as it relates to Bruce Power’s investment activities and other opportunities for innovation. Bruce Power has always had a positive and engaging working relationship with its neighbours. This approach is practical and will be viewed as a model across the province as something very unique and innovative.

By preparing for the economic boom that will see thousands of tradespeople and contractors have long-term work on the Bruce Power site, the local economy can leverage the economic opportunities along with the company.

BY WORKING TOGETHER NOW TO

ENSURE EVERYONE’S PREPARED WHEN

THE LIFE-EXTENSION PROGRAM KICKS

INTO FULL GEAR, WE CAN EXPECT

LONG-TERM JOBS AND INVESTMENT

IN OUR COMMUNITIES TO FOLLOW.

Bruce Power’s independent

regulator, the Canadian

Nuclear Safety Commission,

gave Bruce Power its top

report card in 2016.

Both Bruce A and B received an overall ‘Fully Satisfactory’ mark for the CNSC’s Integrated Plant Ratings, which the regulator has compared to an ‘A+’ in past media reports. Both stations were

also deemed Fully Satisfactory for Operating Performance, Conventional Health and Safety, Waste Management and Security. The other 10 areas rated by the CNSC were deemed ‘Satisfactory,’ which is equivalent to an ‘A.’

Never one to rest on its laurels, Bruce Power will continue to strive to achieve Fully Satisfactory marks in all 16 categories annually rated by the CNSC.

BRUCE POWER DOES MORE THAN JUST

PROVIDE LOW-COST, RELIABLE AND

CARBON-FREE ELECTRICITY TO THE

PEOPLE OF ONTARIO.

In 2016, Bruce Power extended its long-term agreement to supply life-saving Cobalt-60 to Nordion, an Ottawa-based company. Cobalt-60, which spends up to two years in our Bruce B reactors, is used by Nordion to sterilize 40 per cent of the world’s single-use medical devices such as masks, gloves and sutures, while also having other uses in medicine, pharmaceuticals and the food industry.

Bruce Power Fuel Handling Operators harvest the Cobalt-60 during planned maintenance outages, safely storing it metres below the surface of our secondary fuel bay. It is then transferred to a cask and shipped to Nordion, where it is processed and distributed across the world.

The sterilization our Cobalt-60 provides keeps medical instruments clean and hospitals safe for the world’s most vulnerable citizens.

Also in 2016, Bruce Power and Nordion expanded their agreement to include High Specific Activity (HSA) Cobalt, which is used in the treatment of brain tumours. HSA Cobalt is at the forefront of innovative medical technologies that use more non-invasive methods to attack brain tumours. This ‘knife’ focuses 200 microscopic beams of radiation on a tumour or other target. Although each individual beam has little effect on the healthy brain tissue surrounding the tumour, where the beam intersects, a strong dose of radiation is delivered to the site, minimizing damage to healthy tissue and lowering side effects compared to traditional therapy in some cases.

For over six decades, Nordion’s supply of medical-grade Cobalt has come primarily from the National Research Universal (NRU) reactors at Chalk River, ON, a facility that is nearing the end of its life. By expanding its agreement with Nordion, Bruce Power will become an important supplier of HSA Cobalt, and have an even greater impact on lives across the globe.

BRUCE POWER RECRUITS TALENTED

INDIVIDUALS TO SOLIDIFY OUR FUTURE

“A CAREER AT BRUCE POWER IS FULL OF

PROFESSIONAL CHALLENGES, DEVELOPMENT

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHANCES TO BE ON THE

FOREFRONT OF INNOVATION.”

Amber Ritchie, Human Resources Assistant, Talent Acquisition

34

Bruce Power is focused on recruiting Ontario’s top talent to join our team.

Since Bruce Power was formed in 2001 – when the majority of our workers were approaching retirement and very few young employees had been hired by the previous owners to fill the knowledge gaps – we have concentrated on recruiting for the future. This has balanced the site’s demographics and allows for the proper passing of knowledge from the more experienced to our future leaders.

WHETHER IT’S PEOPLE WITH

PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE OR

THOSE JUST GRADUATING FROM

POST-SECONDARY SCHOOL, WE SEEK

ENTHUSIASTIC LEARNERS WHO WANT

TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF AN

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY.

Our Life-Extension Program, which will see the site operate through to 2064, requires us to maintain a steady flow of educated workers. In 2016, we announced a partnership with four Ontario colleges on six diploma programs, which will ensure a continuous cycle of qualified candidates in Operations, Maintenance and other technical fields.

The colleges and programs selected are Lambton College in Sarnia for the Chemical Production and Power Engineering Technology program, Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technology program and Mechanical Technician Industrial Millwright program; Georgian College in Owen Sound for the Power Engineering Technology program; Georgian College in Barrie for the Electrical Engineering Technology program; St. Clair College in Windsor for the Chemical Laboratory Technology program; and Algonquin College in Pembroke for the Applied Nuclear Science and Radiation Safety program.

We have also renewed our focus on hiring from our local Indigenous communities, with which we continue to strengthen our relationships. This important recruitment initiative is working at a grassroots level while we also assist local Indigenous youth in pursuing post-secondary education through scholarship programs.

LOOK.LEARN. DISCOVER.EXPLORE.

The Bruce Power Visitors’ Centre is an

interactive venue where visitors can

explore the world of nuclear energy.

In 2016, we welcomed about 10,000 people to our Visitors’ Centre, which overlooks the Bruce site but remains in the public domain. We have an extensive exhibit hall that explains how nuclear energy works, the nuclear fuel cycle, Ontario’s energy supply mix and more, through interactive displays and videos.

We also increased our wildly successful summer bus tour program, moving it to two tours a day, six days a week in July and August. This allowed us to give 3,319 people from around the world a first-hand look at the world’s largest operating nuclear site.

IN 2017, WE WILL INCREASE OUR

TOUR AVAILABILITY TO SEVEN DAYS

A WEEK IN JULY AND AUGUST.

The Visitors’ Centre also collaborates on energy and environmental education programs for local schools, while staff also conducts private, pre-arranged educational programs to service clubs, community organizations and industry groups.

The centre is designed to give people a deeper understanding of our commitment to safety and how we generate electricity. By offering a wide variety of services and educational opportunities, we provide visitors with a better understanding of all types of energy.

People rarely think about where their electricity comes from when they flick the light switch – they just expect it to work. Every year, after thousands of people dawn our door, we advance the public conversation about the benefits of nuclear energy.

Bruce Power will never take its strong

community support for granted.

Many of our 4,200 employees and hundreds of our contractors live within the borders of Bruce, Grey and Huron counties, and we believe vibrant communities create healthy and engaged workers.

That’s why our Community Investment and Sponsorship Program continues to invest $1.4 million annually into not-for-profit groups, organizations and events that increase the quality of life for our residents. It’s also why our Environment and Sustainability Fund invests $500,000 annually in projects and partnerships that advance conservation, restoration and education projects locally.

It’s also why we continue to invest $80,000 annually in educational scholarships for primary, secondary and post-secondary students, while focusing over $25,000 directly to local Indigenous students who are graduating high school or attending a post-secondary institution.

Our region may be isolated from Ontario’s major cities, but that fosters a rich community spirit that is without peer.
