Although it is one of the richest countries in the world per capita, Brunei depends on the energy industry for nearly 65% of its GDP, making it sensitive to price fluctuations. Furthermore, the country’s hydrocarbon reserves are pro- jected to run out in two to three decades. With this in mind, Brunei’s economic planners intensified their efforts to diversify the economy, expanding into sectors such as agriculture, tourism, halal food manufacturing, and Islamic finance.
