Characterizing Engine Performance with BSFC Maps

    Names:

    Orientation:

Fuel consumption between different engines can be compared by expressing fuelconsumption data on a specific basis (i.e. dividing fuel consumption by brake power)and then plotting these data against bmep as well as mean piston speed. This results in athreedimensional surface that can be reduced to contours of constant brake specific fuelconsumption (bsfc). !"F# maps identify maximum fuel efficiency points as well asoperating conditions surrounding all points on the tor$ue curve.

Learning Objectives:%. &rite e$uations for engine power' tor$ue' and fuel consumption using bsfc map data.. !rainstorm phenomena responsible for local minima on bsfc maps.

    Targete S!i""s:

iagramming * clarifying relationships through visual representations+ntegrating * combining parts into a new whole, easoning with theory * explaining data with accepted knowledge

    a) -utline how to determine the engine speed at the minimum bsfc point' beginningwith information on the chart. +n developing your e$uations' assume that youknow the engine geometryconfiguration (bore' stroke' number of cylinders' andnumber of revolutionspower stroke). &rite an e$uation and define your variables.
