Dean’s Message
Balwant Sheth School of Architecture (BSSA) is proud to present the First Edition of the BSSA Newsletter. We intend to publish this bi-annually to keep you abreast of the news and student life at BSSA!
The Balwant Sheth School of Architecture (BSSA) is a fully developed
constituent school of NMIMS with solid academic and resource base,
modern facilities and infrastructure. As a leading school in Architecture,
we are committed to be environmentally conscious while retaining a
strong focus on user-centricity to create valuable spaces.
About BSSA
The journey at NMIMS Balwant Sheth School of Architecture (BSSA)
transforms the students into all-rounded professionals, by the pedagogy
that imbibes contemporary design and history, art and technology with
equal passion. The School offers 3 unique programs viz. ‘5 Year B. Arch.’, ‘2 Year M. Arch.’ & ‘3 Year B.A. (Hons.) Interior Environment & Design’ which prepare the students for the evolving world of creativity.
The attribute which connects all the 3 programs is that they inculcate a
sense of keen observation in nurturing thoughtful innovation. As BSSA
moves ahead through 2020 and beyond, the school aims to sharpen its
focus on advancements in technology, climate change and
multi-disciplinary approach in solving design problems. We strongly
believe that our earnest endeavour will create individuals who will usher
positive change in Global Architecture & Design world.

Eminent guests like Simon Bradbury, Pro VC International, (DMU); Dr. Manjeet Ridon, Associate Dean, (DMU), Leicester, England & Pankaj Trivedi - Managing Partner of Trivedi Global Education India met Prof. Aparna Surve, Dean, BSSA and Shri. Amit Sheth, Mentor, BSSA. The visit was focussed on the current trends at the institute and possible future collaborations.

Student Activities
Various books on Architecture Design, Landscape, Graphics, Humanity & Services, etc. were displayed at exhibition organized by BSSA Library.
B.Arch. & CIED students painted benches with artistic graphics for NGO ‘Project Mumbai’ to propagate the value of recycling.

Extensive research was conducted by 5th Year B. Arch. Students to propose various design strategies at multiple scales based on their analyses. Design interventions ranged from Urban Inserts, Historic Landscape, Redefinition of Institutions to Reimagining Housing and new Typologies/Models to address the needs of contemporary lifestyle.
Jurors for thesis were eminent architects like Ar. Nuru Karim, Ar. Vandana Ranjit Sinh, Ar. Suprio Bhattacharjee, Ar. Ritu Mohanty, Ar. Rajeev Thakker, Ar. Prashant Prabhu.
Presentation of Final Year Thesis
Day 1 Events: Hogathon, Fear Pong, Baba Ramdev Twister, Treasure Hunt, Bollywood Quiz, War of Words, etc.
Day 2 Events: Sports on the Turf along with games like Football & Cricket, Fun Race inspired by Takeshi's Castle.

A cut above the rest
3rd Year B. Arch. Students organized ‘Freescape’ – BSSA’s Annual Event.
It was a treat for the 3rd Year B. Arch. students as Ar. Ratan Batliboi engaged with the students as part of the Landscape Design Studio on ‘Transforming Defunct Spaces in the City through Place Making’. He discussed his work on developing a Place Making model for the Mumbai Commission of Art, Music & Culture.
Seminar by renowned Architect Chandrashekhar Kanetkar For the students of 4th Year B. Arch., it was an immense learning experience as Ar. Chandrashekhar Kanetkar, while referring to legendary classical singer Kumar Gandharva, shared a powerful lesson on how being one with the rhythm of life leads to creation of extraordinary expression, be it in Music or Architecture. He also shared his fabulous projects and the thought behind those masterpieces.

BSSA STREET: Design Workshop

While sharing his insightful perspective, Ar. Pinakin Patel told students on how 'Inter-Dependencies' & 'Essentialism' are the key ideas to explore architectural pursuits. The session was informative and uplifting, at once!
Conducted by Mr. Kaiwan Mehta, the workshop was about ‘Introducing the various disciplinary shifts as well as changing nature of research design, process and methodologies in the context of a Field’.

3rd Semester at BSSA witnessed experimentation with some of the ideas by translating it into an apparatus made of simple materials to conceive complex architecture in terms of ‘Learning from Emergence’ - the phenomenon that exists in nature.
