Since2006b.supremehasbeenheldattheSouthbankCentretakingoverthePurcellRoom,QueenElizabethHall,LivingRoomandCloreBallroomspaces.TheFes-valisrecreated

eachyearinvolvingperformance,baSlesandworkshopswithsell‐outaudiencesof300eachnightinthePurcellRoomto

over2000eachdayontheBallroomfloor

Following exci-ng discussions with the Southbank centre, the fes-val was booked into the 2006 programme and there began b.supremeDirectorHollyMcCartney’squesttodispelthestereotypeofwomeninhiphopbeingallbutlapdancersinhotpants.Ayear,4countriesandawholelotofbegginglater,theb.supremefes-valwasborn.Featuringaninterna-onallineupofsoloar-stsandcompaniesformedfromtheremovaloftheirmalecounterparts,thefes-valreceivedhoardsofpressandpublicinterestbasedmostlyoncuriosity.Werewomeninhiphopevergoingtobeasgoodasmen?Yes.Couldwomenreallyspinontheirheads?Yes,theymostcertainlycould.

Needlesstosay,thefes-valsoldoutweeksinadvanceandwassigneduponthespotforthefollowingyear.Sixyearson,b.supremedoesn’thavetohuntforfemalecompaniesastherearenowmanyamazinglytalentedall‐femaledancecompaniesandmusicar-stsallovertheworldduetotheresurgenceofhiphopandthepla]ormthatwascreatedbyindependance.

There have beenmany highs and lows along theb.supreme journey but one thing Independance aremost proud of is that b.supremehassuccessfullydisruptedthepreconcep-onofwomaninhiphop.Anypersonwhohasbeentoab.supremeeventwillleaveknowingthedepthofqualityandpassionwithinfemalehiphopar-sts.Itisthewomeninhiphopwhoaretrulyrepresen-ngthebalanceandcollec-venessthathiphopculturewasfoundedupon.ItiswomenwhocantrulybringthehiphopartformstothemainstreamintheUK.

b.SupremeisproducedbySouthLondondancecharityIndependancewhobeganin1998.SpecialisinginthedevelopmentofHipHopdanceandjoiningupdanceaccess,educa-on,trainingandperformance,independanceprovidesanuninterruptedpathwayforyoungdancersandperformerswhowanttoextendanddeveloptheirskills.

Following a par-cularly disastrous hip hop Dance tour in 2005 which featured misogynis-c male dancers, Independance Director JudiMcCartneydecided to inves-gate thepossibility of an all femalehiphopeventwith thehope that inbringing thewomenof this exci-ngculturetotheforegroundIndependancecouldinspireyoungwomenandpla]ormposi-vefemalerolemodels.

Since its incep:on, educa:on has been acrucialelement to theb.supremeprogramme,and in 2008 we partnered with the CountySports Partnerships programme to launch anini:a:ve called Dare2Dance, specificallytarge:ngyoungwomenaged14‐24years.

In the last four years we have put on 4compe::oneventsandworked inPartnershipwith19LondonBoroughsandschoolsinSurreyandKent.
