BPRV Design and Development

• Designed as:A non-reclosing ‘reclosable’ Pressure Relief Device

– An alternative non-reclosing Pressure Relief Device• Usually Rupture Disks.

– An alternative to reclosing Pressure Relief Valves• API series and pilot operated valves.

– To Provide in-line Pressure or Vacuum relief • Easy to upgrade a rupture disk position• Installed directly between companion flanges

– To offer quick and simple External reset, without

opening flanges/piping!

- Offset shaft butterfly valve concept. - The offset of the shaft results in a turning moment - Moment is transferred to force to buckle the PIN.

Sensor - Indicator

• BPRV Closed-Green• Sensor Enclosure is to IP66

/ Nema 4 or 4X’ others by request

• Cables can be conduit connected

• Sensor switch to be electrically specified by user to meet local electrical standards

Sensor installed on free end of shaft

• Cartridge is a push fit & pull out component

• Cartridge is a 1-way fit component

• Used pin is visible through plastic tube

BPRV Response Time

Response time defined as the period from first rotation of the shaft to latched full open.

Compares to typical pressure relief valve response times of 100~500 msec

International Codes & Standards

Buckling Pin Valves are recognized by the following standards as an alternative to spring loaded valves and rupture disks:

– ASME Section VIII UG-138 - UD stamp Required• Formally known as ASME Code Case 2091-3• Buckling pin devices may be used as described below:

(1) A buckling pin device may be used as the sole pressure relieving device on a vessel.

(2) A UD stamped buckling pin device may be installed between a pressure relief valve and the vessel provided

International Codes & StandardsBuckling Pin Valves are recognized by the

following standards as an alternative to spring loaded valves and rupture disks:

– API 520 / 521 / 526 / 537• Buckling pin devices are compression-loaded pin-actuated

devices and are the most extensively used type of pin-actuated device

– EU Pressure Equipment Directive• EN ISO 4126-2• Requires a “CE Mark” for all pressure relief devices over 0.5 barg

– ISO 9001 Quality Systems Certification • BS&B’s Manufacturing and assembly facilities are ISO 9001

Certified.

Flare Application• Many customers are moving

towards emission reductions projects and closed flare systems can be used to obtain random flaring instead of constant flaring (27% reduction).

• The BPRV is used as a relief device on the bypass of the control valve incase it should fail closed, in accordance with API 537.

From API 537: “Flare system safety considerations require valve bypasses, each of which must contain a fail-safe device (rupture disk or buckling pin)."

Buckling Pin Valves - ApplicationsESP Pump Protection

BPRV Closed – Fluid pumps freely to Oil/Water separator

BPRV Open – Flow line blocked, flow recirculates to well casing

Advantages of the BPRV in this Application

• Pump is protected by a mechanical fail safe device• Well oil/water column is maintained even with a blocked outflow pipe, reduces the

potential of the well drying out and needing to be re drilled• BPRV latches when open, eliminates chattering thus flow and pressure to pump are

constant, reduces system hysteresis and therefore improves plant reliability

Shell Tube Heat exchanger

The BPRV has been used to protect the shell side due to the fast response time. Reducing the downtime compared to the rupture disks.

• The First API Series Buckling Pin Relief Valve

• Same body Configuration as API Safety Relief Valves

• Piping Dimensions are API Standard

The Buckling Pin API-Series Relief Valve

• Buckling Pins are installed with cap-screw

• Only takes minutes to reset!

• The Calibrated Pin certifies the device!!!

• Operate to 90% of set pressure with no simmering!

• No orifice, high capacity
