20mph zones in school areas

Why are the existing trafc calming measures

changing?

The reduction o trafc speeds in residential areas

and around schools is considered a major priority in

achieving the Councils aim o having zero atalities

on the city’s roads.

The existing trafc calming scheme in Buckstone is

a 20mph zone in streets around the school, whichare within a natural boundary o Braid Road and

Comiston Road.

The majority o streets within the zone were

treated with 75mm high speed ‘cushions’, which

were introduced ollowing consultation with the

Scottish Ambulance Service. This type o eature

allows vehicles with a wider wheelbase, such as

ambulances, to pass over and bypass the eature

completely, reducing any discomort to passengers.

Since the speed cushions were installed there has

been an increase in the level o on-street parking

throughout the estate. This has made it increasingly

difcult or the speed cushions to be used correctly.

As a result o this and ollowing approval rom

the Transport, Inrastructure and Environment

Committee in February 2010, it was decided to

replace the speed cushions on Buckstone Road andBuckstone Loan with 75mm high speed humps that

take up the ull width o the road. The construction

o this phase was done during October 2010.

Approval is now being sought to replace the

existing speed cushions on Buckstone Drive and

Buckstone Crescent, with the same 75mm high

speed humps that will take up the ull width o the

road. The new speed humps will be placed in the

exact location as the existing speed cushions.

Please cut out and return eedback orm below by 29 April 2011.
