Budgets are statements of values. We can do better.

If we want our democracy to last another 200 years, our government must be a force for good in our country. Budgets are statements of values, and Delaine wants California’s budget to reflect the values and priorities that built our great state.

California needs a budget that invests in our future. We need a budget that puts us on the path to:

ü Educate our children from preschool to graduate schoolwithout burdening them with unmanageable debt;

ü Offer healthcare to ALL as an inalienable right;ü Provide PAID family and medical leave;ü Improve our vast infrastructure of roads, bridges, dams and

public transit; ü Ensure clean air and safe drinking water;ü Build housing that people can afford;ü Combat climate change and preserve our environment; andü Protect our most vulnerable populations under attack from

those who are currently leading our country: immigrants, LGBTQ, people of color, seniors, women and our California dreamers.

As Governor of California, Delaine’s budget will be our Democratic Statement of Values.

We will create affordable, high quality childcare and preschool for ALL. Kindergarten will become mandatory and full day. We will move California from near the bottom in per pupil spending steadily upward until investment and achievement are improved, and college tuition will be free again.

California will begin drafting long-range plans, just like cities and counties are required to do. These plans will help us maintain andimprove our aging infrastructure before catastrophe strikes. Planning can also guide us so we are able to take advantage of historic events, like our recent record rain fall.

Ultimately, we must become better stewards of our precious natural and human resources to create a future worthy of our great state and its children.

This is what government can do. And this is what government MUST do if we expect our grand experiment in Democracy to survive another 200 years.

Throughout her career, Delaine Eastin has been a leader who has never been afraid to stand up to bullies on behalf of what is right for the future of our state and our children.

Delaine took on the tobacco industry and helped pass two propositions: one educates children on the dangers of smoking, and the second created and funds First 5 California, the critical program that focuses on child development from ages zero to five.

As State Superintendent, Delaine joined the successful lawsuit against Governor Wilson’s Proposition 187, that onerous legislation that tried to make police, health care professionals and our teachers de facto immigration agents.

During her tenure as Superintendent, Delaine reduced class sizes in grades K-3, and California went from 47th in the nation in funding, to 27th. Sadly, we now rank in the bottom 10 again.

As State Superintendent, Delaine Eastin fought tirelessly for the children of California…and she won many battles. Now she is ready to take this fight into the Governor’s office.
