Held each Thanksgiving morn- ing on Delaware Avenue, this event draws over 14,000 serious runners and walkers alike, many of which are adorned in colorful and creative cos- tumes making the event quite a spectacle. Race participants are asked to join in for the 2nd annual YMCA Turkey Trot Costume Contest on race day, Thursday, November 28th at 8:30 am in front of the Dela- ware Family YMCA (2564 Delaware Ave., Buffalo). Strut your stuff in front of the judges for a chance to win great prizes! Win- ners will be selected in two categories: best individual and best group costumes! (This contest is for race participants only.) For more information on the YMCA Turkey Trot Costume Contest, please contact YMCA communi- cations director, Kathy Ro- manowski at kromanowski @ymcabuffaloniagara.org. A new title by two lo- cal authors offers read- ers a book that’s both trick and treat for Hal- loween. “Buffalo Bizarre: Weird, Wild and Wacky Tales from Western New York” unloads more than two centuries of home- spun tomfoolery into one handy package perfect for holiday gift-giving. The book was written by Brian Meyer, a former Buffalo Rocket columnist, and Mark Ciemcioch. Meyer spent many years writing for Rocket Publi- cations. In fact, he penned his first front-page article for one of the newspapers at the age of 15 – which is bizarre all by itself. He has since carved out a dis- tinguished career in local journalism. Meyer has also taught for many years at SUNY Buffalo State and Medaille College. Ciem- cioch is an area writer who works for the Catho- lic Diocese of Buffalo. “We call it a cruise down the boulevard of the bizarre,” said Meyer. “After people read our book, the region might nev- er look quite the same.” A local almanac of the weird and obscure, “Buf- falo Bizarre” features a special section highlight- ing the region’s connec- tion to the supernatural, as many ghosts, ghouls and creatures have an ap- parent craving for chicken wings. The book offers these tales with a light touch of humor. For example, while you may know Western New York isn’t known as one of North America’s most common place for Bigfoot sightings, it didn’t stop a Chautauqua County town from hosting its own Big- foot Weekend and Expo. Anybody looking for methods on how to collect evidence of Bigfoot, or just hoping to pick up that fa- mous video of a Sasquatch stomping through the woods, could have headed down to Dewittville for the convention. While there were no sightings of Big- foot during the weekend, attendees did report see- ing a creature that can be equally as scary – an in- quisitive WGRZ Channel 2 reporter. While Dewittville used Bigfoot to provide an eco- nomic boost to the town, the community of Perry in Wyoming County went an- other way. Back in 1855, hotel owner A.B. Walker was looking for a way to increase business when he wrapped some water- proof canvas around a coiled frame and dropped it into the nearby Silver Lake. When local fisher- men spotted the object, (Continued on page 6) 'Bizarre' Book of Weird & Wacky Tales Hits Home www.buffalorocket.com COMMUNITY NEWS Distributing to North Buffalo, West Side and Riverside • Established in 1969 Buffalo Rocket Vol. XLIV ISSUE No. 43 • Thursday, October 24, 2013 Publishers of North Buffalo Rocket, West Side Times & Riverside Times On Sunday, October 27th, 2013 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., small businesses on Elmwood Avenue will participate in the Elmwood Village Asso- ciation’s ‘Safe Trick-or- Treat’ event. MUST PRESENT COUPON. EXPIRES 10/30/13

ADOPT A PETThis week’s featured friend:

Nicole

716-851-5694

Nicole is a very pretty tabby, who is probably between two and three years old. She was surrendered to the Shelter in May and is still

looking for her new home. She is very playful, almost kitten-like and extremely affectionate. She would probably do well in a house with younger cats because of her desire to play. Nicole has been in foster care for the last month, where she gets along well with both the large resident dogs and the cats. She was never fearful of the dogs and loves to play with their tails! Her foster mom has some great videos of her doing this. If you are looking for an affectionate yet playful cat, Nicole could certainly be for you. Her foster mom may be reached at [email protected].
