Build a BETTER Sentence Prerequisite Practice #5: Recognize How Parts

Directions: Underline each how part. If there is no how part, draw a line through the sentence.

1.  Flames explode violently from the window.

2.  We cheer like crazy fans when dad got home.

3.  Molly waits with patience while I finish my chores.

4.  The athlete dashes quickly to the finish line.

5.  We eat at the picnic tables without worrying about ants.

6.  The babies sit in high chairs like birds on a high line.

7.  The difficult test asks too many complicated questions.

8.  Andrew’s face turns as red as a tomato when he is

embarrassed.

Materials: tri-fold display board (36 x 48 inches) cardstock (10 for display board posters, 12 for each set of task cards) rubber cement

1. Print posters onto card stock and assemble posters onto tri-fold display as shown below.

2. Print task cards onto card stock and cut out. Laminate if desired. 3. Use posters to review the parts of sentences. 4. Use the 5 prerequisite worksheets to review with students how to write using strong action verbs and how to recognize when, where, why, and how sentence parts. 5. Practice using task cards by doing a few whole class. Make sure to use the 4 steps included in the display posters when you practice. Display a task card and have students practice writing sentences, share with the class, and invite students to critique and correct others sentences when needed. The easiest and medium difficulty level task cards tell students which parts to include in their sentences, and the hardest difficulty level includes only a picture and students can choose which parts to include in their sentences.

6. Decide which level of scaffolding is best for your students.

Easiest – includes colored pencils so your students know which color poster to use to help write each sentence part that should be included as well as the part itself:

Medium – includes colored pencils so your students know which color poster to use to help write each sentence part that should be included but does not include the name of the part so students must refer to the poster set:

Hardest – Includes only a picture sentence prompt and students decide which 2 parts to include.
