Good evening and a very warm welcome to Culver Road for tonight's Southern Combination Football League fixture between the Lancers and Saltdean United FC.

We hope that you are all enjoying the return of football as much as we are, whether winning or losing it's great to be back!

A big thank you for your patience and co-operation with following the new Covid-19 procedures, your assistance helps create a safe environment for everyone and helps to ensure football can continue with spectators.

After our 6-1 opening day victory we lost 3-2 on the road to Hassocks, conceding a last minute penalty. We are expecting some tough games ahead with Saltdean tonight, Crawley Down Gatwick, Peacehaven and Horley this month!

We wish our home & away players, coaches, match officials, supporters and committee members an enjoyable stay with us at the Culver Road stadium.

Please bear with us throughout your stay, as we facilitate numerous safety measures to be COVID-19 compliant - the bar & servery will be open serving hot & cold food & drink throughout the fixture.

Live updates throughout the match - follow us online!

I look forward to catching up throughout the evening.

FA Cup returns to Culver Road.

- Guest match report provided by Ian Townsend of the Isthmian Football League -

Football finally returned - and the FA Cup served up a cracker courtesy of Lancing and Phoenix Sports. We saw six goals- and then twenty one penalties.

One hundred and seventy four days have passed since that damp winter night, and as we arrived at Lancing this evening for the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie between the Lancers and our very own Phoenix Sports it was sobering to think that not one Isthmian club has kicked a ball in anger since, and that the footballing world- indeed, the whole world- is still full of uncertainty. Tonight was the evening that AFC Sudbury should have been propelled into the national consciousness via the BBC iPlayer, as their match at Burton Park Wanderers was due to be televised, but instead the Yellows were already through to the next round. A Wanderers player tested positive for coronavirus, the tie was awarded to the visitors, and nobody was happy with that outcome. But is it an outcome we might need to get used to in the coming months?

The last time we filed a match report from Culver Road, home of both Lancing and the Sussex County FA, we were witnessing the celebrations of a swarm of delighted Hornets. Horsham, at that point tenants here, had just defeated Ashford United to win the 2018-19 South East Playoff Final. Tonight, the place was a great deal quieter, and, much as Lancing is always a fabulous, welcoming place to watch football, slightly surreal. Mask wearing spectators, social distancing, a reduced capacity, a collection of hand sanitisation stations and an electronic programme to cut down on the need for face to face contact made the place seem rather disconnected from reality. If the players had arrived on the pitch in hover boots we’d probably have shrugged our shoulders and only been slightly surprised.

This could so easily have been the opening match of the Isthmian South East season. At the time that the world ground to a dramatic halt, Lancing were six points clear at the top of the Southern Combination Football League. Eastbourne Town were their closest pursuers, but the odds were in favour of the Lancers, and it must have taken a great deal of mental toughness for their players to get over the disappointment. Could they make it this time around? Four wins and one defeat in pre-season had demonstrated that they weren’t exactly ring-rusty, and with one of those victories coming over A27 rivals Chichester City, who defeated tonight’s visitors last season, they looked confident, indeed buoyant, during the warm up. That said, Sports were similarly upbeat, and perhaps with good reason- although they were also rather rushed, as they’d spent much of the preceding three hours on the M25, necessitating a delayed kick off.

"What a match, and what a start to the season. Congratulations to Sports, whose supporters should go into the new league season with optimism after that performance. But commiserations to Lancing. This was a match that neither deserved to lose- and on the basis of that performance, the Lancers might be an excellent addition to our ranks for the 2021-22 campaign."

Fantasy Football update from Barry It is not too late to join the other 93 entrants in this season’s Lancing Fantasy Premier League. Simply go to fantasy.premierleague.com or download the Premier League App. You are then given a virtual budget of £100m to pick a squad of 15 real life Premier League players and those players will score points for your team by scoring goals, making assists or keeping clean sheets. You can also lose points by conceding goals and getting red or yellow cards. Once you have selected your team you can enter the Lancing FC league in the ‘Join Leagues’ tab by entering the code above. You can then make a limited number of transfers each week to maximise your points throughout the season. The first table is out and top of the league with 86 points is Lancing supporter Mcerley Gust. Men’s first team co-manager James Rhodes sits in 62nd place with 40 points and ladies manager Wayne Poulter is way down in 86th with just 22 points. Last year’s champion was Ben Tyszkiewicz and he has started the defence of his title by scoring 55 points which gives him 36th place. Anyone who picked Mo Salah in week 1 is likely to find themselves near the top of the table but with neither Manchester club playing that could all change very quickly.

SALTDEAN UNITED HISTORYThey joined the Sussex County League Division Three in 1984. In 1989 under the management of Mr Paul Hubbard, whose reserve team manager was a certain Rod Flavell, and the Chairmanship of Mr Michael Walker, they won Division Three and were promoted into Senior football for the first time in their history. By 1991 with Hubbard and Walker both departed, there were a couple of flirtations with relegation back into Intermediate football. A huge cash injection by the now head of the FDM company Mr Rod Flavell in the mid-1990s led to an upturn in fortunes, promotion to the top league of Sussex county football, and a John O'Hara Cup Final victory. Big money was being spent on a quest for a league title and promotion to the next tier of the football pyramid.

In the 1999–00 season, they reached the 4th round of the FA Vase. However, the following season Flavell's business took a downturn and he stopped paying players, a move that ultimately led to most of them leaving the club. New chairman Greg Hadfield saw Saltdean United achieve its best performance in the FA Cup qualifying rounds (reaching the First Round Qualifying before losing 2–1 to Worthing), before resigning shortly afterwards. With only youth team players available, Saltdean were unable to win a match and quickly found themselves well adrift at the foot of the table. Hubbard returned to the club where he had started his managerial career to briefly halt the slide between 2001 and 2003. His emigration to Spain in 2003, however, signalled further free-fall. For the 2011–12 season, they are members of the Sussex County League Division Three. They finished the 2007–08 season rock bottom of Division Two and were relegated back into intermediate football after 18 years in senior football, with a new manager in place for the 2008–09 season, ex-Hurstpierpoint manager and Whitehawk coach Paul Stevenson. In 2011 they won the Division Three Cup Final at Fort Road, Newhaven, beating Rottingdean Village 1–0 with Steve Green and Wayne Bolingbroke at the helm.
