Solar technology as an alternate energy choice

South Africa has some of the highest levels of sunshine per square meter in the world. The annual 24-hour global solar radiation average for South Africa is about 220W/m2, compared to an estimated 150W/m2 for parts of the USA, and about 100W/m2 for Europe and the United Kingdom. This means Southern Africa is uniquely positioned to harness the true potential of solar technology.

Solar powered products eliminate wires as the power is absorbed from the sun through the solar panels and stored in the rechargeable battery during the day. At night, the day/night sensors turn the lights on automatically.

Handy hint:

installing electrical cables & boxes

• Buy boxes that are as large as possible to ensure they will

hold all the wires.

• Cable, boxes and switches are inexpensive so buy extra

so that you don’t run short. Purchase planty of the little

items neededfor the project too, eg. straps, electrician’s

tape, screws, saddles and cable clips.

• Be sure to understand how each installation is to be wired.

• Store all materials in an uncluttered space to access them

easily as you need them.

• Determine how to connect power. When working in

exposed framing (in a new edition if the drywall or plaster

has been removed), first install the boxes, then drill holes

and run the cable.

• If you are working in finished walls and ceilings, first cut

holes for the boxes. Run the cable through the roof or fish

it through the walls, then finally, install the boxes.
