The recently opened Porsche Centre in West London is using 22 ‘Forma’ decorative aluminium column
casings from Encasement to conceal structural steelwork while adding to the showroom’s stylish and high qualityinterior design.
Located in Chiswick on the Great WestRoad, the Porsche Centre’s extensive two-storey showroom not only provides displayareas for the different Porsche models, butalso a customer reception foyer together witha number separate sales and administrationoffices on both floors.
The circular Forma column casings aremanufactured from 3mm thick aluminiumand are coated with a protective RAL9007 metallic light grey PPC finish tointegrate with the interior design scheme andbrand guidelines. While 20 of the casings are450mm diameter and range in height from
2,396mm up 3,300mm depending on theirlocation within the showroom and sales
areas, the two other casings are 400mmdiameter and stand 6,696mm high, spanningthe building’s full floor to ceiling height. Toreach the extended height, the casings arestacked using 3,000mm standard lengths andseamlessly joined, while also being cut,trimmed and fitted around existing structuralbeams to provide a high quality precisionfinish to the interior.

Architects are often confronted withthe seemingly impossible problem ofensuring indoor air quality meets
acceptable standards, but without usingventilation equipment that spoils thebuilding’s interior design. One of the biggest issues confronting the
building services industry is the battle tomaintain good air quality inside buildingswithout using equipment that is unsightlyor noisy.We are all familiar with the principle of

Celotex GA4075 used to create contemporary artCelotex insulation has been designed to help keep buildings warm and make them more energy efficient – andthe panels do their primary job very well. However, one artist has found a different way to use the buildingmaterial, creating unique sculptural works of art with shining metallic finishes. The story of these artworksgoes back to 2007 when Italian-born artist Rudolf Stingel held a year-long solo exhibition at the Museum ofContemporary Art in Chicago. The show included several examples of Stingel’s work spanning the previous20 years, and also included a purpose-built entry gallery. This room was entirely clad in Celotex TUFF-R Zero(GA4075) with the silver foil layer creating an almost mirror-like finish on the gallery walls. The room wasilluminated with a glimmering chandelier, and the result was a shining space, with fascinating light effects andreflections. Celotex is lightweight, meaning it would have been easy to transport, and it would have addedvery little load when attached to the gallery’s existing walls. Cutting it is also simple – it can be done with aknife or saw – and this would have helped to speed up the installation process.

Hadrian stars at the Putney Arts TheatreHadrian toilet cubicles starred in the refurbishment of the washrooms at the Putney Arts Theatre. The theatreis run by a charitable incorporated organisation and the new washrooms had to be good value for money aswell as bringing the right dramatic style to the venue. Online research brought them to the Hadrian CubiclesUK website, attracted by the complete choice of a powder coated finish in over 200 RAL colours. The steelconstruction of the cubicles was also ideal for the typical theatre usage where long, relatively quiet parts ofthe day are followed by intense activity during performances. UK distributor Relcross Ltd supplied the threecubicles for the ladies washroom and one for the gents. The design committee chose RAL 4007 purple/violetfor the main colour scheme and the finished cubicles exactly matched the paint finish in other aspects of thewashroom decor. Theatre General Manager Marie Thackwell said “While it was initially the colour optionsthat attracted us, they have proved to be very hard wearing and still look as good as new. Studor shows the way to health and hygiene in the bathroom
While unpleasant, a bad smell in the bathroom is not in itself dangerous. However, it may well be indicative of amore serious and potentially life-threatening issue. The smell can indicate that the water trap seal, has been lost,potentially posing serious health risks. Water trap seals started being fitted on bathroom and kitchen fixtures afterthe 1854 cholera outbreak in London, in which hundreds of people died. Today, cholera is not a risk in the UK, butwithin all our drainage systems sewer gases and pathogens such as SARS, legionnaires, norovirus and others arealways present. For the last 40 years, drainage ventilation expert Studor has been solely focused on developingproducts that maintain the water trap seals in our buildings. Studor’s Trap-Vent solution, the combination of awater trap and Air Admittance Valve (AAV), can easily be retrofitted to an existing bathroom, and is also ideal forsmall group venting in, for example, hotels, care homes and hospitals. It protects the water trap seal between thedrainage system and the room, stopping bad odours and pathogens escaping from empty traps. The StudorTrap-Vent is a combined trap with a 50mm water seal and an integral AAV. It reduces the need for secondaryventilating in small fixture groups and replaces conventional S traps and P traps.

Glass balconies add style to coastal location
A development of luxury apartments on the scenic coast of Yorkshire hasspecified Neaco’s range of contemporarybalconies and balustrade. The complex of32 properties includes balustrade toterraces, glass Juliet balconies and walk onbalconies with Neaco’s aluminium grille
flooring. The aluminium balustrade and rails feature a black powder coatedfinish which complements the tinted glass panels. Neaco’s grille systemsare designed to provide a large foot contact area – typically between 74per cent and 100 per cent on balcony applications – whilst enablingefficient drainage of rainwater. .
Offsite Solutions £5m investmentOffsite Solutions, one of the UK’s leadingbathroom pod manufacturer, has announceda £5m investment programme to expand its production facilities in Somerset to meet the growing demand for its factory built bathrooms. This will be the
biggest expansion programme in the history of the company. Planning approval has now been granted for a £1m facility to increasestorage space at Offsite Solutions’ UK headquarters and productioncentre to accommodate up to 3,500 completed bathroom pods, before the units are delivered to building sites across the country.

Airedale Academy in Castlefordrecently underwent significantrefurbishment to repair its failing flat
roofs, which had surpassed their natural lifeexpectancy and were experiencing wateringress. Prior to the work commencingon site, flat roof manufacturer Bauder helpedthe academy successfully secure £1.5 millionof funding for the required works byassisting them with all stages of theapplication process.
All of the original waterproofing on theschool’s campus was then removed beforebeing replaced with over 7,200m2 of Bauder’spremium reinforced bitumen system, BauderTotal Roof System, by approved contractorFRS Roofing Services. The system build-upincluded Bauder’s PIR Insulation for superiorthermal performance and tapered insulationto effectively create drainage falls withouthaving to incorporate them into the structure.As part of the necessary works, 20new Bauder rooflights were also expertly
fitted to give essential daylight to thebuilding’s interior.
A challenging element of this installationwas the number of intricate detailingrequirements, with the roof possessing over20 separate roof areas, calling for exceptionallevels of workmanship from FRS. There werealso some health and safety implications, withasbestos having been found within thebuilding structure. Consequently, specialistswere called in to ensure safe removal andsome roof areas were overlaid to minimise the
possibility of any asbestos debris beingdislodged and therefore contaminating therooms and corridors below.
The academy remained open and fullyoperational throughout the works, whichcaused logistical challenges, however alldeliveries were timed as not to conflict withvehicles moving in and out of the facility andthe team worked closely with the client toagree working hours to reduce disruption tothe students and staff.

Road and rail tunnels are not oftenassociated with inspirational designbut this tunnel portal building
in Austria, defined by perforated NordicBrass copper alloy from Aurubis, takes aparticularly bold approach.The 5.5km long Bosruck Tunnel passes
through the Ennstal Alps, connecting Upper Austria with Styria. The original, two-way traffic tunnel has been renovatedand a second, new tunnel built alongside.Now part of the A9 Pyhrn motorway, it is used by around 18,000 vehicles each day. This impressive engineering feat isannounced by new portal structures at bothends of the tunnel. The highly architectonic approach taken is
unusual for projects of this kind, suggestinga new building typology celebrating transportinfrastructure. A series of screens – made upof perforated Nordic Brass cassettes, profiledand arranged to reflect the verticality of thesurroundings – partially conceal buildingsand equipment essential to the tunnel’s operation and safety. The rhythms of thescreens highlight the experience of travellers
as they approach and drive straight throughthe building, via the dramatic ‘flying roof’entrance and exit galleries, acting as transition spaces between inside and out. Nordic Brass was chosen for its long-life
and durability, including resistance to roadsalt, following trials simulating the exposureof the material over 30 years. Along withthree other Aurubis copper or copper alloy clad projects, Bosruck Tunnel has beenshortlisted for the 2017 European Copper in
Architecture Awards. All four shortlistedprojects will also be featured on the Aurubisstand at the ‘100% Design’ event in LondonOlympia, 20-23 September.Nordic Brass – also available with a
pre-weathered finish – is produced byAurubis, part of the world’s leadingintegrated copper group and largest copperrecycler. Other copper alloys include NordicBronze and the innovative Nordic Royal, analloy of copper with aluminium and zinc,giving it a rich golden through-colour andmaking it very stable. The Aurubis architectural range also
includes Nordic Standard ‘mill finish’ andNordic Brown pre-oxidised copper, offeringlighter or darker shades of brown determinedby the thickness of the oxide layer. Various Nordic Green, Nordic Blue andNordic Turquoise factory-applied patinashave also been developed with properties and colours based on the same brochantitemineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world.

for the surface drainage of pavements, bicycleroutes, car/van parks and roadways in andaround residential, commercial and lightindustrial areas where the channels need to have high lateral strength, are capable of withstanding continuous compressiveloads and where ease of installation is a major consideration.The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre
long channel component is of a sturdymonolithic design where the grating and thetongue and groove linking system are integralto the channel moulding. The whole unit ismade of tough, virtually unbreakablepolypropylene (PP) formulated to be veryresistant to daily temperature fluctuationsfrom frost conditions to strong sunlight,including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt.Complying with the requirements of EN
1433, the PP is given its UV resistance byadding just sufficient carbon black as astabiliser so that the structural strength of thematerial is unaffected and a consistentappearance is maintained.MONOTEC channels are offered in two
nominal grating widths of 100 and 200mm, both suitable for a loading category of up o Class D400. The 100mm channels are available in three overall heights; 230, 280 and 380mm and provide channel cross-sections of 190.5cm2, 245.5cm2, and 355.5cm2 respectively. The largest200mm channel, which only weighs 16.2kg,has a cross-section of 746.1cm2 and so has an attenuation volume in excess of 74litres per meter. The three sizes of 100mm channels can
be arranged in a step-fall arrangement with different channel heights connected byspecial transition adaptors that ensure the water drains away smoothly and quietlywith the increased flow velocity playing a
considerable role in cleaning the channel run.The step-fall arrangement may be desirablewhere there is a high risk of silting as theincreased flow will help wash debris towardsthe system’s Inspection/Trash Box. RECYFIX® MONOTEC channels are
certified in accordance with EN 1433. The CE symbol, external monitoring and theconformity declaration are the guarantee of amaximum technical and qualitative standard.

Levolux gives a lift to Lee High RoadThe recently completed Goldcrest House residential development in Lee High Road, Lewisham, incorporatesa number of eye-catching features, including an external solar shading and screening solution, courtesy of Levolux. The ‘L’ shaped building isconsiderably larger than the original single-storey terrace it replaces, with a frontage that extends 53 metresin length, following the gentle curve of Lee High Road. To soften the visual impact of the building from the street, Levolux was invited to develop an external solar shading and screening solution, comprising vertical Aerofoil Fins and horizontal and vertical glazed panels. The solution applies across the length of thebuilding and extends vertically, from first floor to roof level. External walkways, with mesh balustrading, areconcealed behind a series of multi-coloured, extruded aluminium Aerofoil Fins. Each Fin, which is fixedvertically at 90 degrees, measures 200mm wide by 45mm thick, with lengths of up to 2.7 metres.

Kalwall® sheds light on educationKalwall® translucent cladding has been extensively used for the impressive refurbishment of the main teachingblock at Featherstone High School in Southall. The original concrete framed building was failing due to ingressof water and needed structural stabilisation. DSP Architecture were appointed to repair and encapsulate theframe, resulting in a stunning transformation into a very modern teaching block. The renovation requiredremoval of the old concrete spandrel panels, repairs to the concrete structure and then over-cladding withKalwall panels supported on a new steel frame which was added to extend the floor space. The two fullyreplaced elevations are a perfect example of how Kalwall can be used for the refurbishment of old and failingcladding and for aged buildings. The new facades allow floor to ceiling diffused and healthy daylight to floodthe interior while providing privacy for students and removing any distractions. An integrated row of clerestorywindows provides ventilation and limited views to the outside. Kalwall eliminates all shadows and glare andthe stark contrasts of light and shade which not only reduces eye fatigue but also enhances concentration.

The Kellogg Tower at Sudbury, in NorthWest London, previously the Londonheadquarters of the international
contractor M.W Kellogg, is being transformedinto a contemporary residential scheme knownas Atrium Point. The existing buildings are beingsustainably refurbished, with solarpanels, air source pumps and heat recoveryunits, all contributing to meet CO2 reductions n the redevelopment.
It is currently one of the largest office-to-residential schemes in the capital and willrealise a mix of a 290 studios, one and twobedroom apartments. Many of the units will
benefit from a cantilevered steel balcony,supported to the existing reinforced concreteslab and structural thermal performance is a keyconsideration. Cladding makes an ‘Ideal Home’

Junnell Homes Ltd developed SalternsReach, a luxurious housing scheme in WestSussex.
Jonathan Bingham, Construction Director atJunnell Homes, explained what his team wantedto achieve at Salterns Reach: “As with all JunnellHomes’ projects, we wanted to create aboutique-style development consisting ofproperties with a bespoke design that wouldshowcase real character and style.”Jonathan explained that the choice of hard
