General Description
The Building Energy Management Training System is a complete introduction to direct digital control (DDC) of
heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. It covers the main schemes of control used in
building energy management. This includes single-zone and multi-zone control, constant air volume systems,
and variable air volume systems.
This training system allows students to get hands-on experience with industrial HVAC control equipment.
Through this program, students will connect, configure, and troubleshoot programmable controllers using
modern HVAC control software.
The course material also covers important topics related to HVAC systems, such as heating, cooling, free
cooling, smoke detection, CO2 level detection, humidity control, and human-machine interfaces (HMI).
The Building Energy Management Training System is part of the HVAC-R line of products. Three options are
offered:
Model 3466-00 is a complete system including a workstation.
Model 3466-A0 is a complete system minus the workstation and allows for a second team to work on
the other side of the station.
Model 3466-B0 includes the additional modules necessary for a team when the Electricity
Fundamentals Training System is available.

Module Description
Workstation (3451-00)
This workstation allows two student groups to work simultaneously. The structure is pre-assembled, made of
steel, and intended for use on a table (not supplied, offered as option). Four pairs of mounting rails firmly hold
the modules of the HVAC-R line of products in place. One holder on each side permits users to neatly arrange
the test leads. A touch-screen computer mount (not supplied, offered as option) can be attached to either side.
Power Source (46200-00)
The Power Source module connects to a standard wall outlet to provide power to the other modules of the
system. The voltage output of your power source depends on your local electrical network. A thermal magnetic
circuit breaker offers overcurrent and short-circuit protection. When the Power Source module is on, power is
available through the L and N jacks using 4 mm test leads.

Control Transformer (46208-00)
The Control Transformer module has intermediate points of connection (taps) on the primary winding to
produce 24 V ac (control) voltage at the secondary terminals with different voltages. The connections to the
primary winding of the control transformer are made through 4 mm terminals (high voltage connections), and
the connections to the secondary winding are made through 2 mm terminals (low voltage connections).
Intermediate points of connection to the primary winding as well as the connection to the secondary winding
are fuse protected. This module is equipped with four fault switches and two ground terminals.
Programmable Controller (46256-00)
This module features a typical programmable controller found in DDC systems. This ensures that students are
trained on equipment actually used for building energy management. The controller has six universal inputs,
two binary inputs, two analog outputs, three binary outputs, and four configurable outputs. It has a
sensor/actuator bus (SA bus) and a field controller bus (FC bus) to help students to become familiar with the
different network standards used in modern buildings. The Programmable Controller module has eight fault
switches for troubleshooting exercises.
The programmable controller requires at least a computer, the Programmable Controller Software (46257-00),
and the Supervisory Controller (46260-00) for minimal operation.

Programmable Controller Software (46257-00)
The Programmable Controller Software allows programming and configuring programmable controllers,
Model 46256. Since this is industrial HVAC software, using it allows students to become familiar with the HVAC
industry standards. This software is required to configure and download programs to the programmable
controllers.
Temperature Network Sensor (46258-00)
The Temperature Network Sensor can be used to introduce students to the notion of remote temperature set
points and to familiarize them with SA bus networks. In a large building, sensors of this type are typically
networked to provide temperature information to the controllers. The Temperature Network Sensor module has
four fault switches for troubleshooting exercises.

Building Energy Management Layout (46259-00)
The Building Energy Management Layout is the main module of the Building Energy Management Training
System. It represents the infrastructure of a building to which the programmable controllers connect. The
faceplate of this module represents the building rooftop unit, the various temperature and pressure sensors,
and the infrastructure of the building (including the zone damper, hot water reheater, zone sensors, lighting
system, and baseboard heater).
Adjusting the different buttons allows the students to simulate the output signals sent by the different sensors
normally available in a building HVAC system. LEDs and bar meters indicate the status of the different elements,
while 2 mm leads relay the output signals from the simulated sensors to the controller(s).
Supervisory Controller (46260-00)
The main role of a supervisory controller consists of monitoring and controlling local networks of controllers. A
graphical interface, accessed through a remote computer, regroups the necessary information on the system
(temperatures, CO2 levels, opening of dampers, etc.) and provides direct control over the inputs and the
outputs. This interface (HMI) would be most useful to a technician working at troubleshooting an HVAC system.
Beside HVAC equipment, supervisory controllers can also manage lighting systems and other electrical
equipment to ensure the comfort of the occupants.
The Supervisory Controller module connects to other devices with several communication protocols, such as
Ethernet (access to the interface), Zigbee (wireless network) and BACnet (FC bus communications). It must be
powered using line voltage, which is obtained from the Power Source module.

Multimeter (46290-00)
This compact multimeter is ideal to perform voltage, current, and resistance measurements. It is the perfect tool
for troubleshooting exercises requiring basic electrical measurements. Picture is provided for indicative
purposes only.
Test Lead Kits (46295-06 and 46295-B6)
These kits contain the test leads required to complete the exercises presented in the course material of the
Building Energy Management Training System.
Touch-Screen Computer Mount (3451-A0) Optional
This sturdy mount allows installing the Touch-Screen Computer (46299-00) on the side of the Building Energy
Management Training System workstation.

Table (3452-00) Optional
The table is 92 cm (36 in) high and is large enough to install the workstation as well as place additional items on
it. The surface is made of hard wood. The table is mounted on four lockable casters.
Three-Way Control Valve (46261-00) Optional
This module is a typical three-way control valve commonly used in HVAC systems to control the flow of water in
coils. Used with the Building Energy Management Training System, this valve helps students to understand how
the components of an HVAC system react to control signals from the controller. The Three-Way Control Valve
has four fault switches for troubleshooting exercises.

Damper Actuator (46262-00) Optional
This module is a typical damper actuator commonly used in HVAC systems to control the opening air dampers.
Used with the Building Energy Management Training System, this actuator helps students to understand how
the components of an HVAC system react to control signals from the controller. The Damper Actuator has four
fault switches for troubleshooting exercises.
Touch-Screen Computer (46299-00) Optional
The Touch-Screen Computer is a compact solution that allows saving space in your classroom. It can be
installed on a full-motion mount on your workstation to maximize your desk space.
