Spring 2019 – Vol. 7 , Issue 1 News from the Boys & Girls Club Building Futures BGC Northumberland in Sight! F or the past three years, with the wonderful cooperation and support of the Northumberland school system, we have been running an afterschool program at the Northumberland Middle School, serving around 35 students after school daily. They participate in many of the same programs offered at our main campus in Kilmarnock. After extensive discussions with senior school officials and a number of prominent county leaders, it became apparent that there is a significant underserved population of students who could benefit from the programs offered by the Boys & Girls Club. With that in mind, BGCNN reached out to a number of businesses and organizations to gauge their interest in participating in the establishment of a Boys & Girls Club in Northumberland County. This group—led by BGCNN Board member Merthia Haynie and with the ongoing support of Macedonia Baptist Church Pastor Linwood Blizzard, community leaders Don and Myrtle Phillips, Sonabank Branch Manager CaTonya Veney, and several others—has been meeting monthly to lay the groundwork for such a club. Once the Boys & Girls Club of Northumberland has officially opened, it will be a unit of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck, which serves as the hub for the entire Northern Neck and Upper Middle Peninsula community. BGC Northumberland will be responsible for its own Board of Directors, its own portion of the budget, programming, and recruitment of the critical life blood of the Boys & Girls Club: volunteers. We have long planned for, and are very excited about, taking this step. Stay tuned as these exciting plans become reality! Northumberland club members gather following a pizza party. By the next day, we were moving on – with a plan. Thanks to our architect Randall Kipp and his partners, our administrative office had moved into empty space in the building they own just outside of town. Thanks go to Virginia Commonwealth Bank and Chesapeake Bank for the office furniture we needed most urgently, and to Northern Neck Computer for the laptops that enabled our staff to resume their work without delay. And thanks to our wonderful friends at the Lancaster Primary School, we were able to ensure a space after school for our first to fourth graders. With our own Activity Center still intact, middle- and high-school Club members were enjoying their usual sports and activities from as early as November 26th. One of the saddest casualties of the fire was the collection of gifts for our Christmas Store that had been accumulating inside the Club’s front entrance. Thank you David Jones of Connemara Corp. and John O’Shaughnessy of Chesapeake Bank for quickly spearheading a fundraising effort among local businesses that included Chesapeake Land Works, Earth Resources, Inc. and Northern Neck Mechanical, enabling us to fill the store with the most wonderful assortment of clothes and gifts we can remember. To our friends at Weekends, our neighbors at Belfield Physical Therapy—both staff and clients, to William and Mary alumni, and to the staff of Rappahannock-Westminster Canterbury, thank you for helping us add to the joy of Christmas for our kids. And to the Virginia Women’s Center, thank you on behalf of our youth for the 43 laptops that helped restore after-school activity and complete homework assignments. For everything that has happened since November 19th, we can’t thank our amazing community enough—in all, 19 businesses, organizations, foundations, churches and dozens of generous individuals—for their financial support, encouragement, and gifts of books, games, and art supplies for our kids. For a few hours on November 19, 2018, as we watched first responders trying to save

National Youth of the Year competition approaches – meet our candidate!

As he watched the fire consume our Clubhouse, Jonathan Putt thought, “This is going to change everything.” Jonathan has been

our director of operations, in charge of overseeing all program staff and program activities since late 2017. He realized immediately that families who depend on us to provide a safe and fun place during after-school hours would need to know what to expect—quickly. And he knew that it would be unrealistic to house kids of all ages—perhaps up to 110 of them—in one building, for as many as three afternoon hours. Gone were the separate spaces—art studio, learning center, tech center, games room, teen center—that had housed different activities and learning experiences, providing structure to our programs on a daily basis. With extraordinary help from every corner of our community, we found rapid solutions. First through fourth graders have been able to continue their days at the Lancaster Primary School and on field trips. Among the activities they’ve enjoyed: brainstorming field trip wishes; visiting Stan’s Skateland for a day of fun; Christmas art projects including making decorations and gingerbread houses; disassembling and reassembling computer parts as part of a STEM program for boys; kickball at Kilmarnock Town Park; a movie day to see “A Dog’s Way Home” in a theatre reserved just for them; forming a

Choir Club with mentor and board member Carolyn Hines; manners classes for boys and girls with Miss Manners Ginger Philbrick. Within the Activity Center, a 12,000 square foot area with few breakout spaces, program staff have been challenged to provide quality

experiences for all from fifth through 12th grades. By now, we have a temporary Teen Center within its own walls—fully equipped with computers, desks, and areas for relaxation and fun. STEM workshops are held weekly in a room designed for this purpose. A separate room, decorated with a UVA basketball mural and colors, has been designated for interactive projects such as a recent video-chat with UVA quarterback Bryce Perkins and other University student athletes and coaches. Many activities have kept middle-school members busy over the past months. They have created art projects for Valentine’s Day and Heart Health Month; enjoyed events and activities planned around Black History Month; formed a cheerleading team; interacted with residents of RW-C’s Dementia Unit; brainstormed ideas for the summer program; practiced strategic thinking

with Dr. Carolyn Hines through card games; and worked on culinary skills in twice-weekly cooking classes. For news about our teens, please see page 7. ■

Each year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America sponsors a competition in every state to select a club member who will represent that state at a national conference where he or

she will compete to become the nation’s Youth of the Year. Our Club’s 2019 candidate is Asiph Frazier. He will participate in the Virginia Youth of the Year Celebration, to be held in Richmond on April 4th and 5th, competing with 22 other Virginia candidates. He also will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Club. Preparation for the competition has been rigorous. Asiph has been diligently working over the past several months. He has written three essays on: his Club experience, his vision for America’s youth, and his personal brand. He has prepared for a 15 minute personal interview with a panel of five judges, and will be required to deliver a three-minute speech based upon the contents of the three essays-- without any notes or props. The following is a sneak preview of what the judges might hear: “The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck has inspired me to come out of my shell and share my passion for poetry, song writing and gaming; to improve my study habits and my grades; and to understand that when I give back, I get back more. In addition, my Club has helped me develop job skills as a junior staff member. My Club has given me hope and opportunity.” From candidate selection to the state conference, each year this Club’s Youth of the Year benefits from a team of dedicated coaches who help define conference rules and provide guidance along the way. This year’s team has been Board President Shawn Lamb, Vice President Dennis Burchill, volunteer Jeffrey Rosenfeld and club staffers Jonathan Putt and Richie Carter. ■

Remembering – A mentor, a colleague, a leader, a friend

On February 10th, we lost a cherished member of our Board of Directors

– William A. Hines, Jr. His wonderful wife and partner in life for over 50 years, Carolyn, remains on our board to continue his legacy. William’s accomplishments are too numerous to mention in this space. He served for 22 years in the U.S. Army and retired as a lieutenant colonel. He is the founding president of the 100 Black Men

College graduation ahead for two club teens

We are thrilled to announce that Shakeria Carlos and A.J. Sutton will

graduate from Virginia State University with honors on May 19th. During their college years they have distinguished themselves both academically and through significant

leadership positions they have held in various student organizations. A.J. had been a member of our Club for three years, and Shakeria for eight years. During those years, both had benefited from the loving guidance of their mentors, Carolyn

of the Virginia Peninsula, known for its successful youth mentoring programs, and served as a trustee of Macedonia Baptist Church. He was especially known for his community activism in support of youth, serving in leadership roles for the boards of directors of several Boys & Girls Clubs. In preparation for a celebration of his life held on March 2nd at Hampton University, BGCNN board members, staff and volunteers shared some of their memories. The following is a sample:

“William mentored the BGCNN children and his fellow Board members through words and actions. He asked each of us to do and be all we could. He has left a smile in my heart.”

- Shawn Lamb, Board President

“William Hines was the epitome of dignity, strength and perseverance throughout his life and to the very end. He was, and shall remain, a true mentor to our boys and girls. We will miss his contagious smile.”

- June Daffeh, M.D., Board Member

and William Hines. “William would be so proud of both these young people and I know how much he would have wanted to be at their graduation,” Carolyn says. Both A.J. and Shakeria majored in criminal justice. After graduating, Shakeria will work for Empowering Youth for Positive Change (EYPC), helping to mentor at-risk youth while attending graduate school at VSU. A.J. plans to start a career in a law enforcement agency. His goal is to gain experience for a possible career with the federal government.

Meanwhile, back at the Club … Our teens have been busy: with weekly outings to look for community service/volunteer opportunities; using technology to research black history; focusing on algebra and geometry daily during Power Hour; organizing a basketball team; continuing the ever-popular Teen Chef Program; submitting mural ideas for the Teen Center walls; monthly “teen takeover nights”; weekly art projects; teaching RW-C residents how to use technology; a March 23 trip to see Washington Wizards play Miami; basketball, baseball and Zumba! ■

“William had his own way of moving others to a better level of performance. He was devoted to the missions of both BGCA and BGCNN. He was always willing to pitch in. He loved his “clientele” - our kids.”

- Ed Fuehrer, Past Board President

“He was passionate about helping youth gain exposure to areas outside of the Northern Neck … I am thankful for the impact that he had on my life and hope to continue his work and vision of expanding the Boys & Girls Club as well as helping the youth of the Northern Neck to achieve their greatest potential.”

- Merthia I. Haynie, DPT, Board Member

“William came at this work as a mentor to the youth, whose love of these kids drove him to make this Club the best it could be … for them.”

- Bobby Thalhimer, Capital Campaign Adviser

A.J. Sutton, pictured here with Kimberly Logan (center) and Nancy Fisher, returns to Club for fun at Casino Night 2019.

Since erecting the first sign, back in October, we’ve made incredible progress. The November fire was a distraction, as all

those wonderful donations for fire relief were dedicated to program operations, equipment and supplies, not to be used towards the Campaign. But now, as we go to press in late March, we have reached 86.5% of our $2.6 million campaign goal. Most of the 215 donors to date are listed in these pages—among them: the Lancaster Economic Development Authority, 17 foundations, 4 businesses, 177 individuals, and 16 churches that participated in a special Faith Campaign. We are deeply thankful to you all. Daily life at the Club has been complicated; operating from four different locations has been challenging. But we have remained focused on the health, well-being and nourishment of our young members. Now we need you to help us get to the finish line. Please pledge your support or make your gift today. Go to: bgcnn.com, click on “make a donation now” and in the notes section indicate you want to donate to the Capital Campaign.
