BUILDING GOOD CITIZENSHIP IN AUBURN

THE FIRST HALF CENTURY

Wilbur B. De Vall, Historian

Civitan Club of Auburn

June 10, 1997

PREFACE

Writing a fifty–year history of the Civitan Club of Auburn was first suggested by Civitan Matt Dakin who assumed the presidency of the Auburn Club October 1, 1995. A “Proposal” was prepared by this author for consideration by the Club’s Board of Directors under date of June 2, 1995. The Board approved the Proposal on June 20, 1995. The approval included the appointment of an Editorial Advisory Committee and underwriting the publication cost if not subsidized from other sources. Members serving initially in an advisory capacity were James Haygood Jr., Honorary Life Member, William Alford, Honorary Life Member, Nancy Ganyard, Joyce Dawson, with Duncan McClusky and Matt Dakin, as Ex–officio members. The first meeting of the Advisory Committee was held September 20, 1995. Progress reports were made to the Board and Club periodically. The initial report included the results of a four–day search of archival material at the Auburn University library. Materials added to the Civitan collection since it was initiated July 21, 1978, under Accession No. 425 were inventories. The collection, as of 1995 (Fig.1), included seven boxes, approximately 300 folders, and several miscellaneous items such as scrap books, mementos, plaques, certificates, and apparel. The Advisory Committee was provided with a “Tentative Outline” of the proposed Fifty-year History that was used in the preparation of this document.

The Club agreed that it would be appropriate to complete the publication of the history for initial distribution on December 10, 1997 – the 50th anniversary of the Club. It was further considered appropriate to dedicate the publication to William E. Goslin, PhD, without whose meticulous record keeping the history would have been most difficult to research.

DEDICATION

This Fifty–year History of the Civitan Club of Auburn titled “Building Good Citizenship in Auburn – The First Half Century” is dedicated to the memory of Dr. William E. Goslin without whose detailed records this document would not have been possible.

“Bill” Goslin, Club President (1967–68 and 1983–84), kept meticulous records on members, events, and projects. His membership card file was especially helpful in compiling the list of former members. His record of Charter Members was the only source of names since a copy of the Charter Night program could not be located in the files of the Club nor at World Headquarters of Civitan International.

Ohio State University can be proud of this alumnus who became a professor at Auburn University in the Department of Botany and remained in this capacity until retirement. During his academic tenure at Auburn, he joined the Civitan Club of Auburn, and immediately became active as a member, committee chairman, and officer. He enjoyed making records of significant events and they have contributed without measure to the preparation of this History.

In 1975, Civitan International opened membership to women. Bill’s widow, Betty Goslin joined the Club in October 1988 and has followed in Bill’s footsteps as an active member and leader in Club projects.

The Civitan Club of Auburn is proud to dedicate this publication to WILLIAM E GOSLIN as a tribute to a man who exemplified the purposes of Civitan – FELLOWSHIP, KNOWLEDGE, AND SERVICE.

BUILDING GOOD CITIZENSHIP IN AUBURN

THE FIRST HALF CENTURY Wilbur B. DeVall, Historian

Civitan Club of Auburn

A NEW CLUB IS BORN

The Civitan Club of Auburn was sponsored by the Montgomery Civitan Club and chartered December 10, 1947. The ceremony took place in the Green Room of the Pitts Hotel, East Magnolia Avenue, in Auburn. There were 48 charter members of record. Elected as first president of the club was Glenn Baldwin. He was unable to complete his term of office and was replace by James A. Silavent. According to a press release, the Club celebrated its first anniversary with a dinner and address by R.G. Hicks, Governor, Alabama West Florida District. Twelve new members were initiated in the presence of International President James Richardson, District officers, and representatives of other Districts in Georgia and Alabama.

FIG. 2. Anniversaries celebrated at Christmas.

Anniversaries have been celebrated over the years by combining the event with a Christmas party (Fig. 2). It was at such a party in 1993 that the first attempt was made to outline a chronological history of the Club. A Constitution and Bylaws, adopted in 1955, are in the Archives as are subsequent amendments in 1962, 1977, 1980, 1984, 1991, and 1994. The office of Historian was added to the Bylaws in 1989 which resulted in the first report from this officer to the Club in September 1989. The Historian was initially an Ex-officio member of the Board of Directors but made a full member, with voting power, February 1996. Officers and committee chairmen are currently adding to Archives their records and supporting documents annually following expiration of their respective terms of office. Documentation of all official actions of the Board and Club (minutes) are now kept in a Minute Book as a source of reference for the future. Special banners (Fig. 3) display all awards won as banner patches and certificates and plaques (Fig. 4) have been added to the archival collection in the University Library.

[ ]1

Membership in the Club, beginning with the Charter members in 1947 through the present, will be found in the Appendix, Exhibit A. The alphabetical listing reveals that 416 individuals have been members of the Auburn Club and that membership as of December 10, 1996 was thirty nine.

CLUB PROJECTS

Projects have been coded as Service (S), Fund Raising (F), and International (I), Appendix, Exhibit C. They have ranged alphabetically from Achievement Center to Zip Code Book. The first fund-raising project was a raffle. It included a boat, motor, and trailer displayed on the sidewalk in front of Campus Drugs and across from the birthing place of the Club, the Pitts Hotel. Income from the project was used to purchase the playground equipment for the first city park in Auburn, named Felton Little Park (Fig. 6). An historical project was initiated in 1965 when 150 America flags were purchased for display in the downtown section of the city (Fig. 7). Each was mounted on a parking meter post after the brackets were made to hold them. A Bicycle-safety School was popular with the kids and a picture taken during the school made the front cover of Civitan International magazine.

[ ]7

Fig. 8. Roadside sales of chicken-box lunches.

Chicken-box lunches were packed and sold at roadside (Fig. 8) prior to each home football game at the University. Cub Scout Pack 13 (Fig. 9) was chartered in 1952 when the Auburn Club agreed to serve as sponsor. Wilbur De Valle, Club President, became the first cub master and served continuously in the role for ten years. Little League Baseball, later named Dixie Youth Baseball, was a major project that led to sending both the team and coach, Civitan Verl Emrick, to Williamsport, PA for the national playoffs. At one time, the Club purchased and serviced a number of chewing gum vending machines placed around the city.

Fig. 10. Charlie Spivak band brought to Auburn.

A few members may recall signing a note at a local bank to bring the Harry James and Charlie Spivak bands to the campus (Fig. 10). Payoff at the intermission required $3,000. Pictures are on file of a Womanless wedding (Fig. 11) put on at the PTA Carnival held at the high school.

[ ]9

Fig. 12. Radio Day at WAUD with Civitan announcers.

A Radio Day at WAUD (Fig. 12) was an experience involving several solicitors of advertising and a few who did the announcing. The Club joined with the Opelika Civitan Club to finance a Plat Book of all properties in Lee County with advertising paying the entire cost in excess of $10,000. All sales represented profit. The Swedish Gymnast Team held a public demonstration on the University campus with the Club selling tickets to finance the show. While fruitcake sales have hit highs and lows, a picture (Fig. 13) of a 400-pound order to a customer in St. Louis, MO shows the order on the loading deck of the old Post Office.

Fig. 13. Fruitcake order ready for shipment.

[10]

Just prior to Christmas for several years, Civitans conducted a Toy and Clothing Drive (Fig. 14). Donations were exchanged for theatre tickets and the items were collected in barrels place at strategic locations in the downtown area. Several community projects have involved the Club and are listed in the Appendix, Exhibit C.

BUDGETS AND BUDGETING

Several years passed following presentation of the Charter in 1947 before the Club prepared a budget for the fiscal year. When the accounting year was changed by Civitan International from a beginning date of July 1 to October 1 of each year, the Club became more serious about estimating its potential income and anticipated expenses. Budgets for several of the fifty years were located and the amount of each appears in the Appendix, Exhibit D. The amounts budgeted reflect no linear increase or decrease, and they range from $1,464 to $17,140.

CLUB PUBLICATIONS Since early in the history of the Club, a bulletin has been published monthly. Its name, CIVITEL, has persisted throughout the years. It began as a mimeographed issue on Goldenrod-colored paper. Currently it is produced by the photocopy method, without benefit of a computer, and issues for each year are printed on a different colored paper as the mailing cover. Recently, a Cub Brochure was printed for distribution to the public and prospective members. This publication – A Fifty-year History of the Civitan Club of Auburn – is the third publication of record.

LADIES AUXILIARY PRECEDES WOMEN’S MEMBERSHIP A group of Civitan members’ wives met September 21, 1955 at the home of Virginia Haggard and organized the Civitan Auxiliary of the Civitan Club of Auburn. Charter members numbered 32: two of this number are current members of the Auburn Club or wives of members – Ruth Alford and Nancy Ganyard. Officers of the original group included Nancy (Dillard) Ganyard, President, Virginia Haggard, Vice President, and Virginia Sims, Treasurer (Fig. 15). The group continued into the early 1960s according to a scrap book dated 1961-62 and a bank statement for July 18, 1961

showed a balance of $120.23.

During the early years, Auxilians assisted the Civitan Club with a District Council meeting in 1956, a Toy and Clothing drive prior to Christmas for several years, and other projects. The ladies donated to the Auburn Youth Center, coordinated the visit of Santa Claus in 1958, sponsored a blood drive in Augurs 1960, held a reception for the Junior Civitan Club the same year, and attended several ladies-night functions of the Civitan Club. Members of the Civitan Club were invited to the first Auxiliary picnic in 1957 which was held at the Chewacla Park home of the R.C. Jacksons on the lake.

The Club met each third Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. Women were first admitted into Civitan as members in 1975.

CAMPUS CLUB REPLACES COLLEGIATE CLUB

Fig. 16. Chartering of Campus Civitan Club.

Civitan International authorized Collegiate Civitan Clubs but the effort proved unsuccessful. Next, authorization was granted to form Campus Clubs on the assumption that they would be formed on campus of State universities and colleges. In Auburn, the organization was spearheaded by Civitan James Yerkey with assistance and followup by Duncan McClusky.

The Auburn University Campus Civitan Club was granted its charter during the tenure of Paul Hill, Alabama Central District Governor, at a meeting held in thee Opelika Civitan building (Fig. 16). Caroline Jones was the first president. Organization efforts were initially made by Jennifer Whorley, a senior in the Chi Omega sorority. Meetings were held on campus in the office of a professor in the School of Education. Civitan Jim Yerkey made signs announcing the club that were posted on bulletin boards across the campus by McClusky.

The first fund-raising project, designed to reduce the $30 dues, was the sale of Krispy Kream donuts on a football Saturday. It was less than successful since another organization sold out first to the tailgaters on campus. Another proposed project failed to lift off, that of recycling waste materials in all residence halls. McClusky entertained members, encourage them to become fully organized, but left the campus for other employment before the club could be revitalized. Cecelia Schmitz took over the task of relocating members without success during 1966.

Jill Small, second president, was custodian of a club scrapbook and early photographs.

[14]

JUNIOR CIVITAN CLUB CHARTERED The Civitan Club of Auburn chartered a Junior Civitan club at the Auburn High School April 18, 1956. Charter night was held in the Green Room, Pitts Hotel in Auburn (Fig. 17).

The principal of the High School required that membership be limited to girls since boys were members of the Key Club sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Auburn, of which the principle was a member.

Membership in the Junior Club has ranged from a few to more than fifty. Members have assisted the Senior Club on a number of occasions and have sponsored projects on their own. Some of those projects benefiting the community include collecting canned food for needy families and coats and jackets for these families, visiting a local nursing home taking with them puppies and kittens from the Humane Shelter, performing volunteer services for the Shelter, a Rake and Run project for the elderly which made lawns look better, and adopting grandparents at a local Home for the Elderly. Fund-raising projects have provided income for Civitan International. The Juniors have participated in a Dance-a-thon, collected a mile of pennies, entered the Ronald McDonald project by collecting Pop Tops from aluminum cans, had a participant in the SNO-DO held in Canada to help raise money for the Civitan International Research Center, painted children’s faces in connection with sporting and holiday events, and kept rocking chairs rocking for donations to Civitan International.

The Club has provided leadership for the Alabama Central, Junior Civitan District at all levels and a delegation attended the Junior Civitan International Convention held at Samford University in June 1996.

MEMBER QUOTES

Members of record as of December 10, 1996, were given an opportunity to submit quotes for the History. Those received at the Editorial deadline date include the following.

Let your light so shine so that others may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. – Nancy Ganyard (Member Feb. 1986)

I was asked to join Civitan and become a Charter Member. I was not ready but joined two years later because there were no fines/assessments, members could take a leave of absence for good reason, and meeting times were convenient. – Wilbur De Vall (Member Feb. 1949)

I came into Civitan through the back door. I began work at Civitan International and joined the Birmingham Action Civitan Club. When I moved to Auburn in 1982, I immediately sought out the Auburn Club and have found it to be as great a group of Civitans as the Action Club. I feel that we are special people with a spirit of caring and community responsibility. They’re also a fun group! – Pat Oliffe (Member Nov. 1980)

Fellowship, Knowledge, and Service – that’s what Civitan is all about. After twelve years, Civitan is a very important part of my life. – Frances Hale (Member Feb. 1983)

Because this civic club has a primary aim to be of service to others, I have enjoyed joining my father and two brothers as long–time members of Civitan International. – William ‘Bill’ Alford (Member Mar. 1954)

The Auburn Civitan Club provided me with a built-in group of instant friends when I moved to Auburn in 1992. This was my first experience with a civic group and it has given me a chance to give something back to my new community. I have had a great sense of accomplishment from my activities in the Club. – Matt Dakin (Member May 1993)

The Club’s Aid to the Handicapped project was my first close contact with a severely handicapped child in 1978. A four-year-old, Christy Slaughter, a victim of Cerebral Palsy and severe mental retardation, needed a special wheelchair designed to control the curve of her spinal column. Her parents, young students at Auburn University, could not afford the chair. Auburn Civitans paid for it over a two-year period. This experience proved to me that helping people is one of the greatest joys of being a Civitan. – Stephen ‘Steve’ Marcinko (Member Sept. 1967)

[16]

TRIVIA

The first issue of a Club Bulletin – The CIVITEL – was dated November 16, 1949.

The Auburn club chartered the Phenix City club twice; once before and once after the clean up instigated by Governor John Patterson.

Some of the locations of club meetings include, in addition to the Pitts Hotel, the campus of Auburn University in the Foy Union, in a temporary dining hall (ex-military barracks), the Heart of Auburn Motel, the Quality Inn, Terrell Dining Hall on campus, and for special social events, the Auburn-Opelika Elks Lodge, Colonial Room of Colonial Bank, Quincy’s Restaurant, Shoney’s, Board Walk Grill, and Denaro’s.

Auburn schools benefited from club projects including the School bus Driver Safety Award, School Crossing Guard uniforms, Bicycle Safety School, and the PTA Halloween Carnivals (now Fall Festivals).

The first female member of the Auburn Club was Dru McGowen following International’s decision to admit women. It was at this time that the civitan Creed was revised to eliminate the exclusive reference to Men and Man.

Initially, Civitan International included only Canada in addition to the United States and only the two flags of these nations were displayed at International conventions.

Prior to the expansion of Civitan International beyond the boundaries of the U.S. and Canada, each club was mandated to display a miniature-set of flags on the head table whenever an International officer was present.

The International Logo of Civitan has remained circular in design with the exception of a few years when it was changed to comply with the wishes of an International president. Originally, as at the present, the colors of International were blue and gold. during the interim period when the logo became other than circular in design, the colors were changed to red and black.

The Civitan Club of Auburn has been a member of the Alabama District (1947-50), the Alabama West Florida District (1951-60), and the Alabama Central District (1961 to the present).
