Mom Shirley Returns Home to ADPi!

Over the past few years, spectacular renovations and updates were made to the interior of our house. These changes not only energized the women of Tau Chapter but also prepared them to compete at the very highest level at the University of Kansas and within the larger Alpha Delta Pi organization. Additionally, our newly renovated house has activated and engaged alumnae as never before.

Building on this enthusiasm, we are thrilled to announce an exciting new endeavor - Tau Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi is getting a much needed and long desired facelift to the outdated outside appearance of our 1950's style chapter house!

The Tau Corporation Board reviewed several different design and pricing options, but ultimately returned to a general concept considered during the 1980 house addition. The renovation project, Building Pride, will include façade and grounds changes to achieve a more traditional Greek revival look, along with some updates to Mom's apartment. This project has been long in coming for the women and alumnae of Tau!

Tau Chapter is excited to welcome home a familiar face this academic year - Mom Shirley Goodburn! After two years as House Director at Kansas State's Alpha Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi and two years at Tau, Mom Shirley moved to Florida in 2015 to be closer to her family. However, after a year away, she was ready to return to the Sunflower State and as House Director for Alpha Delta Pi at KU. "Being around all the collegians

keeps you young," she says. "It's like having a bunch of grandkids."

Though she returned home just a short time ago, it was a natural transition back to ADPi life. "Getting to know the new group of women who are moving into the house each year is the most exciting part of being House Director," says Mom Shirley.

Fall 2016

The Tau House is receiving a much-needed facelift to its current 1950's style appearance. The renovation project, "Building Pride," will include façade and grounds changes to achieve a more traditional Greek revival look, along with some updates to Mom's apartment.

Welcome Home, Mom Shirley!

Our architect, Julie Black Wellner '78, is donating approximately $100,000 of her and her company's (Wellner Architects, Inc.) time to create the drawings and organize project management work. Additionally, Kris Dannenberg Swords '80 is donating her expertise as a master gardener to advise on the landscaping. Currently, plans are to begin construction in April 2017 and have everything finished by July 2017. Meeting the completion date means the house will look spectacular for fall formal recruitment.

Buy a Brick

The renovation project will include replacing the old, problematic "driveway looking" walkway leading up to the house with a new brick walkway.

One special way you can be part of this future history of Tau Chapter is to purchase a brick (or bricks!) inscribed with your name and initiation date, with mother/daughter names, in honor or memory of a sister or an inscription to represent an entire initiation class. While the program will be ongoing for several years, we need at least 300 bricks purchased by June 1, though we

would like much more. Remember a brick can be a terrific gift!

You may purchase your brick through the donate page at kualphadeltapi.com or http://www.bricksrus.com/order/kuadpi/ with the following options:

4" x 8" brick - 3 lines, 18 characters - $2508" x 8" brick - 6 lines, 18 characters - $500

Future Events

Plans are in the works for a special event next fall to celebrate the renovation so be sure to check the Facebook pages, ADPi website, your email and mailbox for details in the coming weeks!

Rock Chalk HonorsAs you likely heard, ADPi

teamed up with the ladies of Kappa Sigma for an "all girl revue" to win BEST SHOW at Rock Chalk Revue last spring! Not only that, we also won five other awards: Best Costumes, Best Original Song, Best Use of Theme, Best Script and Best Use of Set. The theme was Now You're Talking, and the title of the show was "There's an App for That." We can't begin to express how excited we were to participate in Rock Chalk and to win so many awards.

AcademicsSpring 2016 GPAs are in and ADPi ranked fifth out of 12 sororities with a 3.37 average. This is

up from the previous semester by 0.05 points. Grades have been an area of concentration the past several years and we are pleased to see the results. In addition, Panhellenic chose Gretchen Kelly '14, Ashley Hocking '14 and Anna Wonderlich '14 as Scholars of the Month in December 2015, March 2016 and September 2016 respectively.

Greek AwardsADPi shined at the University of Kansas's Greek awards last spring. Tau won the following honors:

• Distinction in Academic Progress• Distinction in Risk Reduction and Management• Distinction in Chapter Management• Excellence in Membership Development and Education• Excellence in Leadership and Campus Engagement• Excellence in Community Awareness• Outstanding Panhellenic New Member - Freshman Natalie Craig '15

District Leadership Conference (DLC)At the beginning of the year, the chapter attended the ADPi DLC and received several honors:

Excellence in Panhellenic, Excellence in Philanthropy, Best Campus/Community and Senior Michaella Schick '13 received the Dorothy Shaw Leadership Award (1 of 33 across the international organization).

RecruitmentFall recruitment went extremely well for Tau Chapter as 71 Alphas were welcomed to ADPi! These

new members will participate in a 10-week education program where they will learn about the rich history, mission and importance of sisterhood in Alpha Delta Pi with initiation set for November 5.

This semester is off to an outstanding start, and we are excited to see what is in store for Tau Chapter this school year. A special thank you to all alumnae who assisted with redecorating, refurbishing and renovating the chapter house. The new upstairs bathroom, freshly painted halls and newly installed carpet are a big hit. We appreciate having a clean and lovely place in which to live. Our next project, which takes place in the spring, involves exterior renovations. We can hardly wait to see the finished product!

"Every group is different. The women living in the house this year are very considerate and a joy with which to live. I couldn't ask for a better group of collegians."

When she is not at the chapter house, you are most likely to find Mom Shirley watching her grandsons play football or spending time with other KU House Directors. "We have a lot planned already," says Mom Shirley. "The House Directors and I like to play canasta, do crafts and go out to eat together most weekends. We've even signed up to take Tai chi."

Although her calendar is full these days, Mom Shirley always enjoys catching up with alumnae in the area and showing off the new house renovations to visitors. To reach Mom Shirley directly, send her an email at [email protected].

ADPi and Kappa Sigma ladies worked together for a winning all-girl review at this year's Rock Chalk Revue.

When Mitra Marashi Templin '88 and her husband moved to De Soto in 1993, Templin found her passion as a community activist and a mom to two current Jayhawks.

In addition to serving as a member and former president of the Tau Corporation Board, she served eight years on the De Soto City Council, two years as Council President and eight years as an appointed member of the Board of Directors for the Johnson County Library.

Templin's passion about the strength of public schools, and the unique quality of life Kansas provides its citizens compelled her to take the plunge and run for the Kansas State Legislature in the District 38 Republican primary this past August. While she ended up losing to the 2-term incumbent, Templin says, "Running was the right thing to do. Asking the residents of District 38 to challenge the status quo may not have created change, but it hopefully set the stage for the future."

Because Tau Chapter encourages member involvement, it is no doubt Templin's time at Tau helped inspire her craving for civic involvement. In Templin's case, that meant serving on the Tau Executive Board, serving as a senator on the KU Student Senate, being a member of the Student Union Activities Executive Committee as well as a member of the Kansas Memorial Corporation Board.

Templin graduated from the University of Kansas in 1990 and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for six years before starting her family. After raising her children, she returned to the workforce and now works in the insurance industry.

As if she weren't busy enough, in addition to her civic involvement Templin served as a past Tau Chapter Advisor, Girl Scout and Boy Scout leader, served on the Barn at Kill Creek Barn Board and on the Board of Directors for the Junior League.

Templin exemplifies what it means to be a sister of ADPi, not only as an undergraduate, but also as an alumna, and we couldn't be more proud!
