The FlexEnergy turbine was selected by Petronas through a tender and,aher rigorous due diligence, the Petronas team determined thatFlexEnergy’ssynchronousgeneratorturbinedesign,whichisuniqueamongturbines,wasineffectasmallversionofthereliablelargerunitscurrentlyoperaUonalintheirextensivefleetofgasturbines.
THEVALUEOFFUELFLEXIBILITY
FlexEnergycombusUontechnologyoffersthewidestfuelenvelopeavailable,whichPetronasdeterminedtobeofvalueduringtheearlystagesoftheproject:thisfuelflexibilityallowedtheturbinetobecommissionedandbeginoperaUonbeforetheplaYorm’sfullfuelcondiUoningskidhadbeencommissioned.TheFlexTurbine®wascommissionedinJune2016and,asidefromplannedstoppages,hasrunconUnuouslysince.
AVOIDINGUNANTICIPATEDDOWNTIME
AlthoughfullautomaUcsynchronizaUonwiththeplaYorm’semergencydieselgenerator(“EDG”)isinplace,primarypowerreliabilityandavailabilityisvitalforO&GoperaUonswherecapitalinvestmentandproducUonvolumesarehigh.TheBTJT-AplaYormisesUmatedtoproducebetween17,000–20,000barrelsperday.

MEETINGGLOBALSTANDARDS
TheEPCcontractfortheplaYormwascarriedoutbyTechnipwhoweresaUsfiedthattheFlexEnergydesign,safety,manufacturingandqualityprocessesmetgloballyrecognizedstandards.FlexEnergyworkedwithmulUplestakeholderswithinTechnipthroughtheprocurementprocess,includingmembersoftheirtechnicalandcommercialteaminIndonesiaandtheUnitedStates.TheFactoryAcceptancetestwascarriedoutbyTechnipUSAatFlexEnergy’sheadquartersandwasadendedbymembersofPetronas’sseniorteams,includingprojectleadsfortheBTJT-AplaYormanddepartmentalheads.
PACKAGEDANDMODIFIEDFORRELIABILITYOFFSHORE
TheturbinewaspackagedwithaddiUonalgasandheatdetecUonsafetysystems,meeUngthedesignrequirementsagreedwithPetronas.StainlesssteelenclosurepanelsandepoxypaintedinternalcomponentswereselectedtomiUgatethemarineenvironment.CoreenginemodificaUonsweremade,includingUtaniumnitridecoaUngsofrotaUngandstaUccomponents,toensurehighoperaUngreliabilityoverthelongerterm.ThecontrolpanelwasIP65ratedandfidedwithanaircondiUonertoprotectitfromthesalt-ladenmarineenvironment.
UNIQUELYSAFEBYDESIGN
TheFlexTurbine®wasplacedintheplaYorm’ssafeareaasPetronasunderstoodtheinherentsafetyofthefuelcompartment.ThefuelcompartmentisnegaUvelyvenUlatedandindependentoftheposiUvely-purgedmainturbineenclosure,prevenUngfuelfrommigraUngtothemachine’shotsecUonintheunlikelyeventofafuelleak.ThisdesignisuniquetoallFlexEnergyturbinesandoffersanatypicallyhighlevelofsafetyinstandardconfiguraUon.
