FERRIS AT A GLANCE: The Ferris State University men’s basketball team improved to 9-2 overall this campaign with Tuesday’s (Dec. 28) 84-56 non-con- ference triumph at Alma, Mich. Ferris, which is currently 2-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this season, will host Lewis (Ill.) Thursday, Dec. 30, in non-league play at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. (EST) in Big Rapids, Mich. THIRD-STRAIGHT WIN: Ferris State won its third consecutive outing this season in the 50th all-time meeting against Alma Tuesday. Senior guard Carlton Epps (Benton Harbor) tallied 18 points, junior forward Jeffery Shanahan (Flint/Kearsley) scored 14 points, junior guard Dennis Springs (Toledo, Ohio/Scott) netted 13 points and senior guard Corey Epps (Benton Harbor) totaled 10 points as the Bulldogs won the first matchup between the two schools in the last 17 years. NO PROBLEM SCORING: Ferris sank a school-record 16 three-pointers en route to the program's 900th all-time win with a 110-104 overtime victory over Indianapolis (Dec. 21) in the first-ever Lions Club Holiday Classic at Wink Arena. The Bulldogs also converted 22-of-28 (84.6%) free throw attempts. Ferris trailed 39-37 at halftime but made 11-of-13 (84.6%) three- point shots in the second half to draw even after regulation. FSU then outscored UI 17-11 in the extra frame. Carlton Epps nailed six treys and finished the contest with 27 points for FSU. Dennis Springs added a per- sonal career-high 24 points, senior forward Willie Burrel (Muskegon Heights) totaled 20 points and sophomore forward Terrance Shaw (Saginaw/Bridgeport) scored 18 points for the Bulldogs. BIG WIN ON BIG MONDAY: The Bulldogs forced 22 Southern Indiana turnovers and shot 47.9% (34-71) from the floor en route to last Monday’s (Dec. 20) 93-82 home win over nationally-ranked Southern Indiana in the Lions Club Holiday Classic. The 15th-ranked Screaming Eagles were picked first in the preseason Division II national poll. Carlton Epps led Ferris with 24 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Junior guard Antwuan Holt (Okemos) added a season-high 18 points along with six assists while Dennis Springs chipped in 11 points and seven assists. FSU also received 10 points and five rebounds from Terrance Shaw. USI was the national Division II runner-up last season. GLANCING AT THE BULLDOGS: Ferris State, which claimed the 2003-04 GLIAC North Division Regular-Season Championship, finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 14-14 overall record and a 14-4 league mark. FSU, which has won more GLIAC championships (10) than any other league member, posted its best overall record in 2003-04 since compiling a 21-12 ledger during the 1997-98 season. Three starters and eight letterwinners return. HEAD COACH BILL SALL: A 1994 Calvin graduate, third-year FSU head coach Bill Sall previously held assistant coaching positions at Calvin (1992- 95), Ferris State (1995-98) and Hillsdale (1998-02) prior to being named Ferris State’s 11th head coach. The Zeeland, Mich., native served as Ferris’ interim head coach for a portion of the 1995-96 campaign and led the Bulldogs to a 5-8 mark. Before joining the coaching ranks, Sall was a standout player at Calvin from 1985-90. He twice (1989-90) received sec- ond-team National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III All- America honors and led Calvin to three MIAA championships, four NCAA- III Tournament bids and the 1990 NCAA-III Final Four. Sall has a current 39-39 (.500) career mark. THE BULLDOG TRADITION: The 2004-05 campaign marks the 77th season of Bulldog men’s basketball. The program began in 1925 although Ferris did not field a team from 1942-45 due to World War II. FSU has compiled a 901-838 (.518) all-time mark. The Bulldogs have won 10 GLIAC titles, made six NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and reached the 1988 NCAA-II Elite Eight. Ferris captured a league-record four consecutive GLIAC titles from 1986-90. JIM WINK ARENA: Ferris has recorded a 26-37 (.413) overall record to date in home contests at Jim Wink Arena, including a 16-31 (.340) mark in league play. The 2,400-seat facility replaced Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997- 98 season. FSU is 6-1 (.857) at home this year. A LOOK AT LEWIS: Ferris State and Lewis will square off for the 10th time Thursday with the Flyers holding a 7-2 series’ advantage. Lewis has won seven of the last eight encounters to date, including a 76-63 home victory in the last meeting (11/15/03) at Romeoville, Ill. LU, which is coached by first-year head coach Kyle Green, was 24-7 overall during the 2003-04 cam- paign and reached the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament for the second consecutive campaign. The Flyers compiled a first-place 16-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) record last season and were select- ed to finish eighth in the 2004-05 GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll. LU is presently 5-6 overall and 1-5 in GLVC play this season following last Monday’s (Dec. 20) 93-62 non-league home win over Trinity Christian. The Flyers, who are led in scoring by senior guard Anthony Scala (16.2 ppg), have lost two of their last three games to date this campaign. FSU head coach Bill Sall is 0-2 in his head coaching career versus LU. BULLDOG BITES: The 2004-05 campaign represented the first time the Bulldogs had won six of their initial seven games of a season since 1974-75 ....... Carlton Epps surpassed Aaron Nauta's (1996-00) school record mark of 166 career three-pointers by sinking two versus Southern Indiana (Dec. 20) in the Lions Club Holiday Classic. Epps has 177 career treys to date. He also moved into second place on the school’s career steals chart against USI and is 16 away from matching Ty Miller’s (1990-94) record total of 227 thefts ..... Ferris’ 110 point outing versus Indianapolis (Dec. 21) is the Bulldogs' highest in the six-year history of the new Jim Wink Arena. The 214 total points in the contest also represents an arena record .... The Bulldogs were the only squad in the four-team Lions Club Holiday Classic (Dec. 20-21) field to finish with a 2-0 mark ........ Carlton Epps has currently reached double-figure scoring in all 11 contests this campaign. He is 22 points away from scoring his 1,200th career point ........ Dennis Springs notched his 400th career assist at Alma while Willie Burrel garnered his 300th career point in the win ....... The Bulldogs will resume Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at rival Grand Valley State Saturday, Jan. 8, beginning at 8 p.m. (EST) in Allendale, Mich. FERRIS PICKED SECOND: Defending champion Ferris State was picked to finish second in the 2004-05 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs totaled 32 points along with two first-place votes in the balloting conducted by the conference's head coaches. Michigan Tech was selected as the North Division favorite as the Huskies recorded 35 points along with five first-place votes. Findlay took the top spot in the South Division with 25 points and five first-place votes. Each of the league’s 13 head coaches ranked the teams in their respective divisions, but were not allowed to vote for their own team. ON THE ROAD: Ferris is 358-307 (.538) overall since 1980-81 and sports a 167-209 (.444) record in road/neutral site contests during that span. The Bulldogs are 2-1 (.667) on the road this season. THE FSU ROSTER: Ferris’ 2004-05 active roster includes three seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and four freshmen. Eight of the 14 players are guards while the remaining six are frontcourt players. Thirteen players hail from Michigan with one from Ohio.
