Dear Parish Family,Peace and all good! In this weeks Gospel reading from

Matthew (25:14-30), it is interesting to look at the positionof the text as well as its content. In the first place, we arein the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. Next Sunday is the

Solemnity of Christ the King, the end of the Church year. Each year, as we approach the end of the cycle of read-ings, we begin to notice how they invariably deal not justwith the end of the year, but with the eschaton, the end oftime itself. Not coincidentally, this weekends text is physi-cally situated close to the end of Matthews gospel as Je-sus prepares his disciples for the end of his ministry onearth.

Todays readings stress the need for accountability aswe realize that our own life and work is finite as well. Each of us has been given unique talents and abilitieseach day in our lives and in each stage of our lives. There

are the spiritual gifts, talents, and opportunities of child-hood, youth, maturity, and old age. And we are chal-lenged to identify, accept, and use these gifts of time, tal-ent, and treasure for our own benefit and for that of oth-ers.

In mentioning the servant who buried his talent (themoney given to him by his employer to invest), Jesusshows that He clearly understands that many times we areoften tempted to hold back, to refrain from committingourselves out of fear. Every investment requires a certainamount of risk, after all: we may lose as well as gain. When it comes to our spiritual lives, that fear is often a

sign of our lack of trust in God and in our own worth. Itmay be the fear that in giving of ourselves, the I that welove so much and hold onto so closely may disappear alto-gether. Or that we will never be repaid adequately forwhat we put forward: we may be ignored, used, or evendespised and ridiculed by others.

Jesus challenges us to face such self-centered fears. Themaster in this parable is rough on the servant who holdsback. We are, after all, held accountable for all that hasbeen given to us. This is not because God is mean-spiritedor vengeful. On the contrary, Jesus reassures us that bysharing with othersinvesting the talents that have been

given to us-- we come only closer to Gods presence andlove, and ultimately to the real meaning of our lives. So,we need to take a chance on Loveby living each day fullyand completely and with gratitude for all that has beengiven to us.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

    TOWN HALL Q&A WEEK THREE

    Q. I would like to ask if it is possible to change the Satur-day 7pm Mass from the Serra Center to the Old MissionChurch.

    A. Thank you for your query. I am consulting with the ParishStaff, the Parish Advisory Board and the Hispanic commu-

nity on this question. Starting on Sat., November 19, we

will offer the 7pm Saturday Mass (Spanish) at the OldMission Church. We will also add a Sunday 7pm Mass

(Spanish) at the Old Mission Church starting the first Sun-

day of Advent 11/27/11. This will be on an experimental

basis to see how things work out. We may have to move

back to the Serra Center or the Parish Chapel once the

retrofitting begins at the Church (estimated: February

    December 2012).Fr. Chuck

    8/12

    Padre Chuck
