• This Friday, January 22 is the annual Rally and March for Life in Washington, D.C. as well as in many other cities around the country, including a rally on the steps of our own state capital of Trenton beginning at 1 :00 P.M. The morning Mass on Friday will be the Votive Mass in Thanksgiving for the Gift of Human Life. I invite all our parishioners to join in prayer that day for the end of abortion in our country, and for the protection of human life at all its stages.

If you want to see a powerful and prayerful display of Catholic liturgy, tune into EWTN for the National Vigil Mass for Life on Thursday evening at 5:30 P.M. The procession usually takes about forty minutes to get all the seminarians, deacons, priests, and bishops present in Washington for the March into the sanctuary.

• What exactly is a holy door? Since the year 1300, popes have announced the celebration of special "holy years" or "jubilee years." Typically these are held every 25 years. Occasionally the pope has called one for a special commemoration. The 1950 Holy Year, called by Pope Pius XII after World War II was the first one that in which Americans participated in significant numbers. In 1983, Pope John Paul II decreed an extraordinary Holy Year to commemorate the 1950th anniversary of the death of Christ on the Cross. The last holy year, in 2000, was billed by Pope John Paul II as the Great Jubilee of the Second Millennium. This year, Pope Francis has decreed an extraordinary Holy Year of Mercy.

During the Holy Year, there are special services held in Rome at the four major basilicas, as well as in other churches and shrines. Various prayer and penitential practices are offered as a way of participating in the Holy Year. Indulgences - the connecting of our prayer and life to the merits of Mary and the Saints - are offered for various holy year practices. One of these is the practice of going to Rome and entering any of the four major basilicas (St. Peter in the Vatican, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major and St. Paul-outside-the- Walls) through the "holy door."

The holy door is a special entryway in each of the major basilicas that is only opened for the Holy Year. In St. Peter's Basilica, which has five entry doors, the holy door is the one farthest to the right as you enter the basilica. It is literally bricked up at other times, and solemnly opened by the pope at the beginning of the Holy Year. Pope Francis formally opened this door on December 8. During the 1975 opening of the holy door at St. Peter's by Pope Paul VI, some of the brick masonry fell on the pope as he knocked the last bricks away! Now all the masonry is removed by workmen in advance of the formal opening. (I had lunch with Father Geno Sylva on New Year's Day. His office is in charge of the various Holy Year activities. As a souvenir, the head of his office, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, gave each of the staff members one of the bricks from 2000 that were removed this past month in preparation for the opening of the Holy Door. As I was holding the brick, it was, fortunately, a little too large for me to walk off with it; but I had thoughts!) During this year millions of pilgrims will process through that Holy Door and the others in Rome.

The holy door is not merely a superstitious act. Rather the attention given to the holy door helps us to focus on this year as a "portal" or "entryway" to a deeper life of grace in Christ. Princeton University has a special gateway onto campus that traditionally

• may only be used by graduating seniors; several high schools have a "senior door;" grooms traditionally carry their bride over the threshold of their new home for the first time as a symbol of their entry into a new life. In a similar way, the holy doors of the Holy Year are a symbolic gateway to deeper life in Christ.

Pope Francis, in trying to make this Holy Year of Mercy as open as possible to all Christians, has encouraged every diocese in the world to have a holy door, and has extended the Holy Year indulgence of the Roman holy doors, to every one throughout the world. Pope Francis himself highlighted this extension by opening the Holy Door at the Cathedral of Bangui, Central African Republic, during his pastoral visit there on November 29. Bishop Serratelli has designated two holy doors in our diocese. One is at Saint Margaret's Church in Morristown. The other is at Holy Rosary Church in Passaic. The Holy Rosary door is especially significant because it is the only church in the state where Pope Saint John Paul II celebrated Holy Mass. On the way back from his participation in the 1976 International Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia, the then Cardinal Wojtyla made a visit to the Polish community in Passaic and celebrated Mass at Holy Rosary on the altar still in use today. Hopefully at some point during this year, we will have the opportunity as a parish to make a pilgrimage to one of these Holy Doors.

• I express the sympathy of the whole parish to Pauline Zdanewicz, one of our office staff, on the recent death of her mother, Hilda .

If all goes as planned, I will be celebrating Holy Mass today with those on our Faith Vacation in Jericho. You will be in my prayers at all the holy places.

God bless you all,

Father Ray

Honor Your Loved One

St. Anthony’s Parish Choir: I want to take this opportunity to thank all who work so hard behind the scene in the Music Ministry and made our Christmas Liturgies so beautiful and solemn. First, I must give a heartfelt thank you to YOU - the people of St. Anthony’s - for participating so well in song and pray-er at the Christmas Liturgies. Second, I want to thank the Parish Choir for their hard work the past few months. The choir has finally grown in size and we are now more able to make a joyful noise to the Lord. Both the Ecumenical Lessons and Carols and the Christmas Eve Carol Sing and Mass were testimony to this. Thanks to Choir Members: Lynn Andrade, Cindy Antonucci, Leah Arabia, Michael Arabia, Diana Connolly, Tony DiGiovanni, Lou Glaser, Joe Hall, Paula Hoffman, Pat Lobascio, Alexandra Megalos, Chris Megalos, Vincenza Piepoli, Barbara Ritola, Corinne Schiavo, Charles Stebbins Thanks also to our parish Cantors: Cindy Antonucci, Joe Hall, Barbara Ritola and Tom Charsky for leading us in sung prayer. I also want to thank Mike Lucibello and the Contemporary Choir for their hard work and dedication throughout the year and at the Christmas Eve Mass in the school gym. PARISH ADULT CHOIR REHEARSALS will r esume on Thursday January 21st at 7:30pm in Church. New members are still needed and much welcome. The Choir sings at the 10:00am Mass on Sundays. You DO NOT need to read music or have an operatic voice to be a mem-ber of the choir or to sing. The only requirements are the ability to attend rehearsals regularly and the ability to sing with the choir when they are scheduled. We are looking for Sopranos (high woman’s voice), Altos (low woman’s voice), Tenors (high men’s voice) and Bass’ (low men’s voice). The Choir is open to anyone of high school age and above. Please speak with me for further information or come to the rehearsal on the 21st. Michael Riedel, Music Director and Organist.

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Isaiah 62:1-5 Isaiah prophesizes that Jerusalem will again be held in high esteem by God. He states that all nations will witness its glory. He compares a groom's joy toward his bride to the joy that God will feel toward Jerusalem.

Second Reading: I Corinthians 12:4-11 Paul discusses the different gifts and talents bestowed upon different individuals. He ex-plains that each individual receives various talents so that everyone can contribute something to society.

Gospel: John 2:1-11 Jesus and Mary attended a wedding where Mary informed Jesus that there was no more wine. At first he said it did not concern him, but then he turned several jugs of water into wine. His disciples were also present, and believed in him more strongly after they witnessed the first sign of glory he revealed to them.

A Special Thank You! From Eva’s Village

Thank you so very much . Christmas was merrier for so many of Eva’s clients due to the very generous donations of clothing, toi-letries and blankets donated by St. Antho-ny’s Parishioners. Your generosity is very much appreciated.

We're looking for a few good Catholic men. We meet every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 7:30PM at the St. An-thony’s School Library. If you are interested in joining the Knight's please contact Kevin Duffy at 201-956-3272. The Knights of Columbus, and the Holy Name Society are two long-time organizations for men in our parish. Both groups are in need of rejuvenation. Both groups have long played an active role in many aspects of the life of our parish, often providing muscle and money for many different projects of outreach efforts. But in order to continue to participate at that level, they need the energy and the talents of a new generation of Catholic men. The history of the Knights of Columbus, has been a long and glorious chapter in the life of the American Church and the Universal Church.

January 2016 Dear Parishioners, January is a very busy month for our school for many reasons, one of which is Catholic Schools Week! Catholic Schools Week opens on January 31st which also happens to be the feast of St. John Bosco. St. John Bosco founded the Salesian Priests, Brothers, and Sisters. He dedicated his entire life, until his last breath, for the education of youth! St. Anthony School is a Salesian, Catho-lic School and we continue the work of education according to the spirit of St. John Bosco. This year’s National Catholic Schools Week theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The theme focuses on key components of Catholic education: faith development, academic excellence and dedication to service. These elements set Catholic schools apart from other educational options.

This is a great time to see what is going on in our parish school. We will begin the week on Sunday, January 31 at the 8:30 am Mass followed by a “Stem in Action” Open House from 10:00-11:30. The students will be showcasing the amazing work they do in their classrooms, especially their current STEM research. On Thursday, we will be honoring the members of the parish’s organizations with breakfast after the 7:30 AM Mass.

Catholic Schools Week gives us the opportunity to share our gifts with those who may be thinking about Catholic education for their children, as well as you, our parish family. Gratefully yours, Sister Emy DeFilippi, FMA Principal

In appreciation to our Parish organizations, St. Anthony School cordially

invites members to a “THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE”
