VALUING THE LIVES OF OUR BABIES ~ CHILDREN ~ FROM CONCEPTION

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you. (Jeremiah 1:5a-b)

This is a powerful account of how precious human life is, the life of each baby who is conceivedand how ardently we need to work for the same passion for each child God gives us, as have Mary

and Mark Cisilino, two of our parishioners.Julia was baptized in the hospital on July 22, 1999 by Fr. Tom Cargo who was at St. Marys Par-

ish at the time. From then on it was faith and prayers that got us through the roller coaster ride ofhospitalization. She became weak and ill after birth and her weight dropped below one pound for awhile. They told us she probably would not live. They told us the extremely delicate blood vesselsin her brain could burst at any moment leaving her brain damaged. Her greatest struggle wasbreathing. Her oxygen levels would fall because her lungs could not absorb enough oxygen. So theywould give her more oxygen. The more oxygen they gave her, the more it would damage her lungsthereby decreasing their efficiency to absorb more oxygen. It was the epitome of a vicious cycle. They told us she would most likely have asthma and breathing problems. They told us she probablywould have learning disabilities. At one point they told us she would be completely blind and I will

never forget the day they called and said we better come in right away because she probably was-nt going to make it. In the end she stayed in the hospital for almost four months coming home rightabout the same time as her due date.

When Julia was born at twenty-four weeks, the top of her head to the bottom of her torsowould fit in your hand with just her little legs dangling down. She was perfectly formed and had allher parts like other little babies, just tinier. At birth her eyes were still fused shut but opened aweek or so later and were a beautiful blue. We watched her eye lashes come in and listened to herlittle cries grow stronger. During the last month she was in the hospital she began to noticeably growand put on weight. She was not allowed to leave the hospital until she was five pounds. When she wasfinally sent home she had reached what seemed to us a whopping five and half pounds.

VALORANDO LAS VIDAS DE NUESTROS BEBS ~ NIOS ~ DE CONCEPCIN

Her hospital bed was covered with prayer cards, St. Julia medals, and crayon pictures from her bigbrother and sister. I even smuggled in a very old vial of holy water from Lourdes, which I am sure wasagainst hospital regulations, and blessed her myself. She was the recipient of hundreds of prayers andabundant love. To us she was beautiful and perfect and we could not have loved her more.

Driving back and forth to the hospital for two hours a day for four months gave us a lot of timefor thought and prayer. We usually had talk radio on during the drive and would often hear thenews. At that time, there was coincidentally a news story of a girl who was fighting the courts forthe right to have a late-term abortion at twenty-eight weeks. That was a full month after Juliasgestational age. I would listen to the news story then go into the hospital and hold Julias littlehand and think there is no possible way that girl could know what was inside of her. It was a fullyformed child, a child she would literally have to kill to abort the pregnancy. If the baby was takenout during an abortion, he would most likely live and very likely be healthy. I would pray for Juliaand I would pray for that little baby. I do not know the fate of that baby but I do know Julia isbeautiful and healthy today with extremely little residual damage. I know we made the right deci-sion. We did not know what would happen. We were told to expect the worst and all we knew isthat we trusted God to get us through and if there was something wrong, we would love her just asmuch. - - - - Mary Cisilino - - - parishioner

I remember full well the baptism of little Julia. It is the experience that most impacted my

first two years in the Diocese of Joliet when I was stationed at St. Marys. It impacted me so deeplythat I have preached on it numerous times as to how awestruck I was of the fragileness, beauty andsanctity of life. I remember vividly going to Childrens Hospital. I remember tiny Julia, smallerthan my hand, having a tiny-tiny little white baptism cloth-gown laid over her as with a tiny medi-cine cup of water I poured over her head as I said I baptize you, Julia, in the name of the Fatherand of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. I remember driving home thinking I would hear within a fewdays of her passing and would say some prayers over her and with her loving family. Months wenton and I did not hear and busy work kept me running, until one Sunday morning a beautiful youngmother flanked by her family walked after mass with one of the most beautiful baby girls with bigbeautiful blue eyes in her arms. Somehow the sight was familiar but I was unsure until Mary saidthat this was little Julia who I had baptized not so long ago. It took

my breath away. Julia and her mother and her family took my breathaway. God took my breath away. A bit under 12 years had passedand last summer I arrived at St. Johns as your new pastor. My veryfirst Sunday, from the back of church came a young husband and fa-ther who pulled me toward his dear family and again this family andGod took my breath away. There she was almost 12, growing andbeautiful like her mother and sister and joined with her two broth-ers. All of them are precious, all of them are gifts from God. Allbabies who are conceived should have the same passion rooting forthem to live and to grow in grace as do the Cisilino children fromtheir parents. - - - - Fr. Tom

- - - - Padre Toms

to fulfill the call we first heard at Baptism, the call to be missionaries, to share our faith. On World Mission Sunday, we are called in a special way to be missionaries of faith through prayer and participation in

the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection.Let us pray especially at this Mass for all who long to hear the hope-filled, saving message of Jesus, and for the priests, reli-

gious and lay catechists in mission countries worldwide who offer them that Good News.

WERE ALL MISSIONARIESDo you know the date of your Baptism?Well, on that day, you became a missionary, called by our Lord to share your faith with those around you and to be part of

the Churchs mission to the world.

We are not all able to travel to foreign lands as St. Francis Xavier did. However, we can all make effort in our daily lives through prayer and sacrifice to support those men and women who are called to leave their homeland and preach the Good Newsof the Lord in a foreign land.

On World Mission Sunday, we have the opportunity to be part of the Churchs missionary work in Asia, Africa, Latin Amer-ica and the Pacific Islands through our prayers and generous help offered to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

MAKING A WORLD OF DIFFERENCEJust as our young church here in the United States received support in the 19th century from the Catholics of Europe

through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, so too the growing churches in the Developing World today also require finan-cial help. Your generosity will help make a faith-filled difference around the world!* A gift of $15 is a weeks support of a young man in a mission seminary.* A gift of $25 is a months help for the formation of a religious Sister in the Pacific Islands.* A gift of $50 helps provide care for one of the 50 children at a home in Zambia.

    * A gift of $100 covers the cost of a desk and textbook for five of the 300 children in catechism class at a parish on the

Galpagos Islands off Ecuador.Next weekend a second Special Collection will betaken forWorld Mission Sunday. These envelopesare included in your packet. The Special Collectionwill be taken immediately following our regular offer-tory collection. Please be as generous as possible.
