Summer 2014
Welcome to The Good Companions Seniors’ Centre!
Our Mission: The Good Companions is a non-profit organization that offers programs and services in partnership with volunteers, to promote, enhance and support the well-being, independence and zest for living of both older adults 55+ and adults with physical disabilities in the Ottawa area.
Day Centre Membership Benefits: Your membership benefits include access to a well-respected, concerned, and caring community; a long list of interesting programs, access to our library, free WiFi, reduced rates for our in-house services, dances, bus
trips, free admission to the birthday party in your birthday month and access to 100+ programs and services.
Membership Requirements: Members of The Good Companions must be 55 years of age or older and able to function independently at the Centre. The membership fee is $35.50 annually and is valid from April 1st to March 31st. *Please note that membership fees do not apply to Community Support Services Clients*
Summer Program Registration
Registration for Summer Programs will take place on Tuesday, June 24; Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 26. The Day Centre Staff would like to stress the importance of coming to register between 10am-2pm on these days to help guarantee a spot in your desired courses. If you are unable to make it to the Centre during these times, you may register over the
phone with a credit card from the comfort of your own home. You may also send a friend to register and pay on your behalf.
Following the designated program registration period, many courses may be cancelled due to low enrollment. If you decide to wait until the week after the registration period, a course that appealed to you may have been cancelled but wouldn’t have been, had we known you were interested!
If you must wait until the week after to register, please be prepared for lengthy wait times at the Front Desk as there is no designated staff member to take your registration and all enrollments must be processed by the receptionist who will be busy answering calls and assisting other members with day to day inquiries.
Thanks for your cooperation! We hope to see you on June 24, 25 & 26!
Be an Ambassador for Your Seniors’ Centre! Are you a member, CSS client, volunteer, community partner, donor or someone supporting a family member using our services? If you’ve had a positive experience and enjoy the programs and services that we offer, then please help The Good Companions spread the word! Here are a few simple things everyone can do to let the community know about the wonderful things we do at TGC:
Tell Your Family, Friends and Neighbours: The next time you have dinner with your family or friends or see a neighbour in the lobby, tell them about the programs you are enjoying!
Invite a Friend: The next time you come for lunch or a special event, such as the Birthday Party, invite a friend who has never been to the Centre to join you!
Like us on Facebook & Follow Us on Twitter: Did you know that TGC is on social media? Like us on Facebook (The Good Companions Seniors' Centre) or follow us on Twitter (@Good_Companions) and share our posts and retweet our messages!
Help Us Fundraise: You can raise pledges for our annual fundraising walk, The Walk of Ages, shop at our Bazaars or in Repeat Performance, make a donation to our direct mail campaign at Christmas time or talk us up with local businesses to help us secure new sponsors!
Wear Our Logo: Do you have a Good Companions pin, water bottle, key chain, tote bag, or t-shirt? Wear or display them proudly to get a conversation started with someone who may not have heard of us!
Volunteer: Get involved in our many ongoing volunteer opportunities, spread the word about the good deeds you are doing and motivate others to give back too!
Why Strength Training?
Research has shown that strengthening exercises are both safe and effective for women and men of all ages, including those who are not in perfect health. In fact, people with health
concerns - including heart disease or arthritis often benefit the most from an exercise program that includes lifting weights a few times a week.
There are numerous benefits to strength training regularly, particularly as you grow older. It can be very powerful in reducing the signs and symptoms of several chronic conditions,
including: Arthritis, Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Obesity, Back Pain & Depression.
As people age, poor balance and flexibility contribute to falls and broken bones. These fractures can result in significant disability and in some cases, fatal complications.
Strengthening exercises, when done properly and through the full range of motion, increase a person’s flexibility and balance, which decrease the likelihood and severity of falls. One study
in New Zealand of women 80 years of age and older showed a 40% reduction in falls with simple strength and balance training.
In people with diabetes, strength training has helped many individuals to manage their blood glucose levels. Strength training provides similar improvements in depression as
anti-depressant medications. When older adults participate in strength training programs, their self-confidence and self-esteem improve, which has a strong impact on their
overall quality of life.
Weight training improves sleep quality, allowing you to fall asleep more quickly, sleep more deeply, awaken less often and sleep longer. Strength training is also very important for cardiac health, because the body is leaner. Many cardiac patients gained strength, flexibility as well as
aerobic capacity when they did weight training three times a week. Scientific research has shown that exercise can slow the physiological aging clock, by building muscle
mass and bone density.
The Good Companions can help you to keep physically active this Summer in a friendly, air-conditioned environment. We offer many Fitness, Recreational Dance and Specialty
Fitness Classes taught by certified fitness and dance professionals at very reasonable rates. Please refer to your Summer Program Guide 2014.

For more information on volunteer opportunities contact Robyn Macdonald at 613-236-0425 x 2230, email [email protected] or see the “Get Involved “ tab on our website: www.thegoodcompanions.ca.
Volunteer Profiles
In order to showcase some of our existing volunteers and help you get to know how others are involved at the Centre, Volunteers Services has recently implemented a “Volunteer Profile” section in the Volunteer Lounge. Each month, a volunteer from the Day Centre (including Food Services and Admin) and Community Support Services will be highlighted with their photo and a brief write-up about their duties. Each volunteer that is selected will receive one free lunch voucher to our dining room.
If you would like to be featured in one of the profiles or would like to nominate someone, please call or email the Volunteer Services Coordinator, Robyn Macdonald at 613-236-0428 x 2230 or [email protected]. Or simply put the name of the volunteer in the ballot box in the Lounge. Once a month two names will be drawn and featured for the next month. Winners will be notified in order to consent to being featured in the Volunteer Lounge as well as the next bulletin. Volunteers may only be featured once per year.
Good Luck!

Changes to our Phone System
At the end of March, we upgraded our telephone system; though our main contact number is NOT changing (it remains as (613) 236-0428), one change to note is that our three digit
extensions have become four digit extensions with the number ‘2’ being added to the beginning.
For example: Our Director of Operations had been at extension 390. He can now be
reached at extension 2390
Our Auto Attendant will also be updated to reflect these changes, so please listen carefully to the voice prompts. We apologise for any
