History of Paranormal Research
By Melissa Tanner, TnT Paranormal Investigators LLC

May 2014 Issue
The history of the paranormal research spans decades, if not centuries. It did not start with the invent of paranormal reality TV shows as one
might think. In fact, there have been ghost stories since ancient times and they can be found in many different cultures. These ghost stories
come from a variety of historical locations around the world. These ghost stories begot the want to research and investigate these stories.
Accounts of supernatural occurrences and the paranormal have always been common in the print media. The earliest found document was a
pamphlet, from 1705, called "A True Relation of the Apparition of One Mrs Veal" by Daniel Defoe. However, the most famous “ghost story” of all
time would have to be “A Christmas Carol” written by Charles Dickens in 1843. It is a story of a man, Ebenezer Scrooge, of wealth in money,
but not of wealth in love, compassion, and friendship. It takes three ghosts to appear to him to get him to change. In the end Scrooge became a
changed man and saw that you can have all of the money in the world, but still be poor without friends and family.
A couple of decades later, in 1860, the first "ghost photo" was produced. It was claimed that W. Campbell in New Jersey took a picture of an
empty chair, only to find the image of a small boy in the chair once the photo was developed. This was followed by Boston engraver, William
Mumler taking his own photo only to discover the image of a dead cousin in the photo with him. You might know one of Mumler's most famous
works as the photo of Mary Todd Lincoln with the ghost of her dead husband Abraham Lincoln. Even though he enjoyed some popularity at the
time, these Mumler photos are now generally considered fakes.
A couple of decades later, in 1886, a few scientists banned together and attempted to apply modern scientific or investigative standards to the
study of apparitional experiences. These standards were the work of Edmund Gurney, Frederick William Henry Myers and Frank Podmore.
Then in the 1920s and 30s, Harry Price started doing his research on psychics and psychical phenomena . He also spent a considerable
amount of time trying to debunk claims and expose fraudulent mediums. He was definitely one of the most influential paranormal researchers of
that time. Price was directly involved in a number of investigations of the paranormal in England and founded the National Laboratory of
Psychical Research in 1926. Price spent nearly 30 years investigating and putting together the first ghost hunting tools. These tools were the
precursor to equipment we use today.
Also in the 1920s and 30s, Thomas Edison had a theory that the “soul” was made up of what he called “life units”. He started to work on an
invention of a machine that he believed would allow the living to see and communicate with the dead. Edison unfortunately passed away before
he could prove his theory. Upon his death, in 1931, his theory was picked up by a Russian born painter, musician and film producer Friedrich
Jurgenson. Some say Jurgenson proved Edison’s theory by accident. Intrigued by Jurgenson’s stories of spirit voices, Latvian-born
parapsychologist and former psychology professor Konstantin Raudive spent 9 years recording and analyzing sounds on thousands of tapes.
In the mid-1940s, G.N.M. Tyrrell, after a notable apparitional experience, began research on apparitions. Tyrrell accepted the hallucinatory
character of the experience and pointed out that it is virtually unknown for firsthand accounts to claim that apparitional figures leave any of the
normal physical effects, such as footprints in snow, which one would expect of a real person.

History of Paranormal Research
The study and discussion of apparitions took a different turn in the 1970s with the work of Celia Green and Charles McCreery. They studied
the apparitional experience, aka “ghosts”. They were not interested in whether they existed, but rather they analyzed a large number of cases
to provide a taxonomy of the different types of experiences. In the end, they viewed them as simply a type of anomalous perceptual
experience or hallucination.
Local paranormal researcher, investigator, and author, Dale Kaczmarek, got his start in the mid-70s and joined a team known as The Ghost
Trackers Club. This group shared a common interest in ghost research, hauntings and poltergeist phenomena. Kaczmarek joined the team as
the Research Director and has since gone on to become their President. This group is now known as Ghost Research Society (GRS) and is
still run by Kaczmarek. Over the years Kaczmarek has authored several books on the subject of the paranormal and conducted hundreds if
not thousands of investigations. We were lucky enough to be able to interview him in the March 2013 issue of “Bumps in the Night!!!!” in the
TnT Paranormal Asks column. To learn more about Dale and his works click here.
In the 1960s local TV news programs in both the UK and USA began to feature ghost stories. Then in 1976, one of the earliest paranormal TV
shows was born. The show was called In Search Of..., and was hosted by Leonard Nimoy. It explored many paranormal topics, including
UFOs, cryptids, lost civilizations, and other mysteries. Throughout the 1980s a few TV programs were featured on major networks, such as
“That's Incredible!” and “Unsolved Mysteries”, both of which featured stories of a paranormal nature.
The reality based paranormal shows got their birth in 2000 when MTV's premiered Fear. Fear followed a group of contestants, left at an
allegedly haunted location, as they performed a series of tasks, over two nights, to explore and confirm whether or not the place is haunted.
This show established the visual look and editing style followed by most paranormal reality television shows today.
Fear was followed by Scariest Places on Earth, that aired from 2001-2006 on Fox Family Channel. This show featured reported cases of the
paranormal by sending an ordinary family to visit the location in a reality TV-style vigil. Additionally, in 2002, Living TV launched the ghost-
hunting series Most Haunted; carried in the US by the Travel Channel (show ended in 2010).
In 2004 we saw the birth of two new paranormal themed shows: Dead Famous and Ghost Hunters. Dead Famous was a short lived show that
starred local clairvoyant Chris Fleming. The show focused on road trips through the West Coast of America looking for the ghostly locations
where the legends of stage and screen reside. Ghost Hunters, still on the air as of this article, follows the paranormal investigations of two New
England plumbers and their team of investigators. Not only is Ghost Hunters still on the air and it has had two (2) spin-off shows.
Some other paranormal shows of note are:
• Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures which was launched in 2008. The Ghost Adventures crew lead, Zak Bagans, is from Glen Ellyn and
graduate from Glenbard West HS.
• Bio Channel’s My Ghost Story which was launched in 2010. This show features footage captured by every day people of alleged
paranormal activity. Season 2 - Episode 2, that aired on 4/9/2011, featured footage captured by TnT Paranormal in New Lenox.
So as you can see the history of the paranormal is a lot longer than the recent interest by the TV viewing public. Hopefully this field will
continue on for many, many years to come.

May 2014 Issue
Colleen Carroll is one of the founders, lead investigators and manager for All Seeing Paranormal (ASP), located in the Chicagoland area.
Colleen has had an interest in the paranormal ever since she was a child having had experiences of being places before, but not in this lifetime.
Colleen believes in the paranormal, but also believes all efforts must be made to debunk all paranormal claims. Prior to establishing All Seeing
Paranormal in 2011, Colleen was a member of another paranormal team. Colleen has been a guest on Bob "The Subway Guy" Treciak's
Paranormal Radio Activity show several times.
1) Tell our readers a little bit about you and the role you serve in the field of the paranormal?
I am one of the founders and manager of All Seeing Paranormal (ASP) along with being one of the investigators/researchers. Everyone on
our team, regardless of specialty is an investigator/researcher. We are currently in the process of rebuilding our team and are welcoming
new members.
2) How long have you been interested in the paranormal and what sparked that interest?
As a child, I had always been able to sense the energy around me and have been interested in the paranormal and supernatural since I was
about 9 years old.
My first experience took place when I was visiting Galena, Illinois at the age of 9. I had never been there before, yet I was telling my Mom
where things were located and where we should go. She asked if I had seen a sign or advertisement about these places and I told her “No, I
just know where they are.” I knew I had been there before. Fortunately for me, my Mom did not think I was a crazy child; she had
premonitions, etc. and believed in such things.
Several years ago a very good friend joined a paranormal research team. Up until this point, I had never looked into doing paranormal
research work and was quite content doing my own thing, After hearing what he was doing with the team, I decided to join. We had different
ideas of what we expected of a team and wanted to take a different approach, so in 2011, we left the other team and established All Seeing
Paranormal (ASP).
3) What makes you and/or your team different from others in the field?
I think in some ways our approach is a little different. Our main goal is to educate and help others understand the paranormal activity they
may be experiencing. We have been successful in assisting clients rid their homes of bad and demonic spirits.
Our primary focus is helping clients with activity in their homes or businesses rather than conducting public investigations. I explain to clients
that they need to be comfortable with any team coming into their home or business. We educate our clients on what to look for in a team,
etc. We are much more concerned that a client receives the help they need rather than what team gets an investigation. We have assisted
clients with finding a team in their area or when we have been unable to take on an investigation because of scheduling conflicts.
Our openness and willingness to help in any way we can has earned us a great reputation with our clients. Our clients know they can
contact us night or day with any questions or concerns and this also applies after an investigation is closed.
We are fortunate to have a great team, where people like each other and get along.

4) What do you believe is the most common mistake paranormal investigators make? How can they correct that mistake?
I think people often jump to conclusions and are eager to say something is paranormal prior to researching, or finding the natural reason for
the occurrence. Not everything is paranormal.
5) In your career in the paranormal have you ever had someone bring up a phenomenon or unusual experience that you had never
heard of before?
So far, I have not had anyone bring up something I have not heard of before. I’m sure that day will come!
6) Any advice for a new investigator getting into the field of the paranormal?
Yes, be open-minded, do your research, listen to your clients, and debunk.
7) What do you believe is the best tool a paranormal investigator can use during an investigation?
I believe observation and intuition are a paranormal investigator’s best tools. As for electronics, my recorder is my favorite tool.
8) What is your favorite place/location to investigate?
The Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet, IL is my favorite public location to investigate. The spirits at the Rialto are great and I definitely have a
connection with them.
9) Have you ever had a paranormal experience that “changed” you in some way? Either for the positive or the negative.
Yes, for the positive. My first investigation was demonic and this experience enlightened me to what I was really made of and how much I
really wanted to help people experiencing negative activity. Although I hope I never have to deal with anything demonic again, I know that if
I do, I am well equipped and mentally up to the task to help others with this type of activity.
10) How can our readers contact you to learn more about you and the work you do in the field of the paranormal?

Famous Haunts
USS North Carolina (Wilmington, NC)
Website: http://www.battleshipnc.com/
When construction began in October of 1937, the USS North Carolina was the first battleship to be constructed in sixteen years. She was the
first of ten fast battleships to join World War II.
She was commissioned on April 9, 1941. At that time, the USS North Carolina was considered the world’s greatest sea weapon. Armed with
nine 16 inch/45 caliber anti-aircraft guns in turrets, as well as twenty 5 inch/39 caliber guns in ten twin mounts, the USS North Carolina was a
formidable weapons platform. Her wartime personnel consisted of 144 commissioned officers, 2,195 enlisted men, including 100 Marines.
During World War II, USS North Carolina participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle
stars. In the Battle of the Eastern Solomon’s in August of 1942, the battleship’s anti-aircraft barrage helped save the carrier Enterprise,
thereby establishing the primary role of the fast battleship as protector of aircraft carriers. USS North Carolina carried out nine shore
bombardments, sank an enemy troopship, destroyed at least 24 enemy aircraft, and assisted in shooting down many more. Her anti-aircraft
guns helped halt or frustrate scores of attacks on aircraft carriers. She steamed over 300,000 miles. Although Japanese radio announcements
claimed six times that USS North Carolina had been sunk, she survived many close calls and near misses with one hit when a Japanese
torpedo slammed into the battleship’s hull on 15 September 1942. By the end of the war, the ship lost only ten men in action and had 67
wounded.
After serving as a training vessel for midshipmen, USS North Carolina was decommissioned June 27, 1947 and placed in the Inactive
Reserve Fleet in Bayonne, New Jersey, for the next 14 years. In 1958 the announcement that she was to be scrapped led to a statewide
campaign by citizens of North Carolina to save the ship from the scrappers and bring her back home. The Save Our Ship (SOS) campaign
was successful and the battleship arrived in her current berth on October 2, 1961. She was dedicated on April 29, 1962 as the State's
memorial to its World War II veterans and the 10,000 North Carolinians who died during the war.
Said to be inhabited by at least two extremely active spirits, people that have encountered the ship's residents have heard slamming hatches
and doors, felt cold blasts of air and witnessed the TV and the lights turn off and on. People have reported seeing a young blond man who
disappears in front of their eyes. They've also seen him peering out of the portholes when the ship is empty. There have been enough claims
to draw professional investigators such as Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, as well as other paranormal investigators. If you ever visit
Wilmington, make sure to make time to visit the USS North Carolina.

Comparing Analog vs IP Cameras
By Bill Krempp, TnT Paranormal Investigators LLC
This article will cover video camera technology, more specifically, the Analog vs IP cameras along with their recording technologies, but with a
focus on their usage as part of a paranormal investigation. Let’s start off by explaining the different technologies.
Analog Video Cameras: Most commonly used by paranormal teams are analog cameras. They are also many times called closed circuit
television (CCTV) or security/surveillance (although this term can also be applied to ANY camera used for that use) cameras. These
cameras have very little technology built into them, so are fairly cheap. Broken down to the simplest terms, they are basically a lens, CCD,
Image Processor, and transmitter to send the NTSC or PAL video.
IP Video Cameras: An Internet Protocol (IP) camera is a type of digital video camera that can send it’s video over a computer
network/Internet. The cameras have fairly complex technology built into them, so are more expensive than the typical analog camera, but
offer many more features. They also have a lens and CCD/CMOS, but this is where the similarities end. The IP camera can be thought of
having a mini computer built into it which (depending on the camera) to handle the encoding and compression of the video steam, which it
can send to multiple targets, storage for the video, handling of motion detection, and autonomous pan/tilt/zoom functions, etc. Many IP
cameras even contain an embedded web server so the camera can be controlled, viewed, and managed from any computer with no special
software other than a web browser.
So now that we know a little about what the camera are, how can they be used on an investigation? We’ll cover a few usage aspects and
discuss the analog vs IP differences.
Recording:
Analog cameras send their video back (via a dedicated cable for EACH camera) to a recording ‘device’. Years ago, this used to be VCR type of
device that took a few analog camera signals and recorded them onto a tape. Modern technology made this technique obsolete with the
emergence of the Digital Video Recorder (DVR), which takes those same multiple analog video signals from the cameras and digitizes them and
stores them onto a command computer Hard Disk. DVRs are reasonably prices ($100-500) but can be limited in the number of cameras they
support (typically 4-16) and the resolution/frame rate they can record at.
IP cameras configurations handle this very differently. Since the camera already had the video encoded and compressed, the recording ‘device’
has MUCH less workload. This device here is called a Network Video Recorder (NVR) and can be a dedicated unit or simply an application
running on a PC or Mac computer/laptop. The NVR just reads the incoming network traffic and writes it to disk. One advantage of the NVR
having less workload is that it can handle more cameras. 25, 50, 75 camera setups on NVRs are not uncommon in the commercial security
industry, but not for paranormal investigations where we typically use less than 8 cameras.
Resolution:
Analog cameras are limited by the NTSC/PAL standards that they support so typically range from 240-900 TV Lines (TVL). For reference, a 480
TVL camera is generally 510x492 pixel resolution. Analog resolutions are also given in CIF, 2CIF, 4CIF and D1 standard resolutions.

Analog vs IP Camera Comparison
IP cameras deal purely in pixels and start out at the low end with 640x480 and go up from there with 1 MegaPixel (MP), 2MP, up to 5MP
commonly used with higher resolutions like 16MP possible (although VERY expensive). One drawback of the high resolutions is the amount of
storage needed to store the video.
Power:
Both Analog and IP video cameras can be either local or remote powered. IP video cameras can be provided power by the Ethernet cable
itself when a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch or a power injection device is used. Some locations may not have remote power available for
the video cameras, so centralized power may be used with both camera types. For comparison purposes, both meet the needs for
paranormal investigation.
Night Vision (IR) support:
Analog and IP video cameras are both used in security and surveillance, and both can (depending on the camera models) support IR "Night
Vision" to capture video in low light and no light (0 Lux) locations during an investigation. Just match the illumination distance to the location
for proper lighting. For comparison purposes, both meet the needs for paranormal investigation.
Summary:
Both video camera types offer advantages in different areas, but for the paranormal investigation team, the main factors will generally be
cost, ease of setup, and high quality video. Analog cameras definitely win in the cost category but lose in the high quality area to the IP video
cameras. But does all the extra resolution of the IP cameras justify the 3x cost? Generally not. Analog cameras of middle level quality (600-
700 TVL), along with a quality DVR that can record these resolutions at 15-30 FPS meets the needs of almost any investigation teams. IP
Cameras, although nice, would require knowledge of networking, IP addresses, and the additional headache of switch setup, so do not really
make sense for paranormal investigation usage.

Spirit and Spectrum
The Unseen World
By Cameron Ellis, SPARC Para-Analytics
My favorite movies seem to be the ones where you think you've been in one place the entire time but suddenly your perspective is completely
transported somewhere else and you're forced to flashback through the entire movie and re-experience it from some newly discovered
revelation. The Others, Sixth Sense, Jacobs Ladder, Planet of the Apes did this for us and of course The Twilight Zone which pretty much beat
that (un)dead horse every week for 5 years straight... but we loved it! There is something about being pulled out of our comfort zone and
transported to a different reality that charges us, that gives us that brief thrill when we can escape the confines of our own psychological cell that
only we ourselves are doomed to occupy. And that is why so many of us find the Electromagnetic Spectrum so incredibly fascinating! <insert tire
screech sound here> What the...?!
Is that too big a leap of geek-dom? Well hold on, lets think about this a little bit. When you realize that ALL of what you see, feel, and hear is due
to energy waves in some form or another, and that everyone experiences these waves in their own slightly (or drastically) different way, your
idea of "reality" suddenly becomes NOT so universal anymore. Our own egocentric perspectives and western perception that we are separate
from all other things, has done more to isolate us from our own material world, LET ALONE us trying to conceive of and interact with other non-
material worlds that lie outside of our incredibly narrow senses. What do I mean by narrow? Well lets look at the electromagnetic spectrum
again, the full range of all radiation (photons) and the frequency (wavelength) in which they travel. Now before you get lost in the sciencey
jargon, just know that all energy travels in waves whether you are talking about sound hitting your eardrums, sunlight hitting your skin and giving
you a nice sunburn, or a baseball hitting you in the face... its all a question of the density and frequency of that energy interacting with your
own… with the latter example being the most painful! As far as how much of the electromagnetic spectrum our retinas can detect as visible light,
its somewhere around .0035% of the entire known spectrum, but hypothetically electromagnetic waves can be as infinitely large as the universe
or as infinitely small as the smallest nano-particle (which we're still working on). A thousandth of a percent is a pretty narrow view of the world!
And since I'm color blind that view is even smaller for me! The same goes for sound (or pressurized particle waves), vibrations in the air, water
or ANY medium for that matter, that eventually make it to our eardrums that allow us to interpret as "sound". To help visualize these travelling
waves, picture a very fast snake-like movement wriggling through the air... however some of these waves are undulating back and forth at the
size of buildings and mountains like radio waves while others are so incredibly small and powerful that they can squeeze between the cells and
atoms of our own skin and damage tissue. We call this ionizing radiation with x-rays, gamma radiation and even ultraviolet light from sunburns
being the ones we are most familiar with. But without getting too much into exactly what we're missing on either end of these gigantic
spectrums, just know that we can see, hear and feel only a small sliver of it. The rest is an intangible world that is able to operate largely outside
our five senses and in many cases still beyond the scope of our technology.
While technology is a fantastic tool, it is not a replacement and can only give us clues and hints on where to look... no equipment will ever give
us a definitive answer about something we hadn't hypothesized on first. And even then technology is only fine tuned because of the many errors
in our assumptions up to that point. But its our minds that make these breakthroughs possible when aided by our inventions. I still remember the
first time I saw the Ghost Adventures documentary (the one that granted Zak and the boys their TV series) where the full figure infrared
apparition walked straight through the large room for all to see. It hit the news, it hit every skeptics desk and it ultimately allowed them to go from

The Unseen World
documentary to being paranormal household names overnight. But what did it mean? Did it prove that there are entities that live on planes of
existence composed primarily in the infrared spectrum? Possibly... but nowhere near conclusive. It could just as easily mean that residual
recordings of the past (whatever "time" truly is) block infrared wavelengths much like you and I block sunlight and what we saw was an infrared
shadow of something else that we STILL weren't picking up completely. Or more nefariously, it could have been a sentient non-human force
that literally bends specific wavelengths in order to not be seen by certain dimensions... but this one got caught! Hey, just because you're an
ancient demon does not necessarily mean you're smart. You have to be open to all of these possibilities and dozens of others.
Once you begin to think on these levels and outside of the fraction of existence we mortals move through, a broader world begins to open up
for the paranormal investigator, as it should! Cultures from all over the world have spoken of intangible forces and ethereal energy for
thousands of years before EMF meters, infrared floodlights and spectral analyzers. The Chinese referred to chi, the Hindu's believed in prana,
the Hebrews spoke of ruah while the hippies chanted on about vibes and being on the same wavelength... duuuude. Native American Indians
and Buddhists teach to this very day that we are not separate from one another or the natural world simply because we cannot see, hear or
feel it all the time with our five socially recognized senses. Science and quantum mechanic revelations are just now beginning to echo those
same millennial old concepts that shamans, clergy and prophets have struggled to describe to us. We are not divided by empty air as we
previously thought, we are not the “center” of all things and we are definitely not alone despite what our eyes and ears tell us.
So where's this plot twist? Well its all around us and its been there the whole time! We detect, live and function within this very narrow band of
what we know is a enormously huge unseen, unheard and unfelt ocean of energy. With technology we are able to broaden that visibility slightly
utilizing infrared light (below our abilities) and ultraviolet light (above our abilities), however its still relatively a very minuscule improvement.
Everyday we walk though literally 99.9965% of "reality" without ever realizing or experiencing it... and THAT'S the plot twist...It turns out WE
ARE THE GHOSTS walking through a vast universe that carries on without us! Rod Serling, eat your heart out!

Paranormal Talk with Rev. Kathy
May 2014 Issue
What is it about the paranormal that fascinates and excites us? For most serious paranormal investigators motive is usually a combination of
factors. Most have at some point have experienced something themselves that they just could not explain. They want answers. They seek proof.
We need to be aware however, that there is a major difference between a ghost hunter and a paranormal investigator. The truth is, hours and
hours of work go into an investigation. It can get boring standing in the dark and reviewing up to 60 hours worth of video and audio takes it toll.
That isn’t even to mention the endless hours of historical, geological and environmental research necessary. The work outweighs the fun in
spades.
For those looking for help, it can be difficult to find a serious investigations team dedicated to finding real answers and helping the public. If you
are in need of help it’s your own responsibility to investigate the investigators. Find out what their motives are, how they find their evidence, how
they present their documentation and themselves to others. Ask what a teams methods are, check out their website and view their evidence, Ask
what documentation processes and equipment they use. Find out if the people you let in your home have had background checks and
psychological evaluations.
It’s your responsibility to know whom you let in your home. If you need help and honestly want answers, make certain you aren’t dealing with thrill
junkies. Ask around and find out what a teams reputation is in the community. If they have been arrested for sneaking into cemeteries or
trespassing on abandoned property in their quest to find ‘the truth’ about ghosts and the great beyond, they might not be people you would want
to be involved with. If you are looking for real answers for paranormal activity, make sure your investigators are too.

Name this Haunted Location
Do you know the name of this haunted location? Email us with your guess at [email protected].
Last months Name this Haunted
Location was Tinker Swiss
Cottage.
The following question(s) was/were submitted by our readers, by our online subscribers, or at events.
What is your favorite place to investigate?
My favorite place to investigate is Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum & Gardens located at 411 Kent Street, Rockford, Illinois. There are several
reasons why I love visiting the Tinker Swiss Cottage, not the least of which is it’s a beautifully preserved home, but there are also many claims
of paranormal activity throughout the property.
My first investigative paranormal experience took place during one such visit to the Cottage. While conducting an EVP session on the second
floor of the coach house, I felt a distinct tug on my jacket and I also heard humming.
The Tinker family left their beautiful home, along with their household and personal belongings, to the Rockford Park District. The Swiss
Cottage is a time capsule of the Victorian Era. The home is filled with ornate woodwork and beautiful paintings. Many original furnishings
along with artwork, personal diaries and clothing are on display throughout the home.
If you enjoy historic homes and the paranormal, I strongly recommend that you schedule a visit to Tinker Swiss Cottage. More information
about Tinker Swiss Cottage and the tours and events that they offer can be found on their website: http://tinkercottage.org/
