Tony Murphy cartooning workshop
Bungendore Public School recently hosted Aussie artist
and author, Tony Murphy, who held interactive workshops
for students K-6 in the art of cartooning.
Each year group was shown how to represent likenesses
of things in the world and experiment with western and
manga cartoon styles.
He said his underlying aim was to show all students the
power of cartoon art as a communication medium and
stimulate them to access their own unique cartoon skills.
Year 5 teacher, Ms Forman said the students now were more aware of the power of
cartoons in the media and how useful cartooning can be to convey mood and messages.
“Since the workshop, many of the children also are trying their hand at producing
cartoons in their free time and we can see that it is a useful and positive way for them to
express their feelings.”
Student Sarah Cavanagh said the workshop was “definitely worthwhile and lots of fun!”
Thanks!
Our school would like to
thank Darren Heathcoat
of Bungendore IGA for his
generous support of our Crunch and Sip
healthy eating initiative.
Defence News
Defence kids are in the middle of a really busy term.
Today the K-2 students had a presentation by Anna Stewart from the Defence
Community Organisation. The aim of the program is to assist younger Defence kids to
identify and manage worries that can arise from living the Defence lifestyle, for example
during parental absence or relocation. This is done through the reading of a book with
the help of the mascot “Tyler Turtle”.
On the 7th September, the Year 4-6 students will be attending a service at the Australian
War Memorial for the Battle for Australia Commemoration National Ceremony. The
students will participate in making a wreath, with all other Defence Students around
Canberra. It is with great pleasure that our school has been chosen to have two year 6
students lay the wreath on behalf of all other Defence Students in the Canberra
Community.
We will again be representing the school at Floriade with the garden gnome painting
competition. This will again involve all of the Defence Students. Feel free to pop over to
gnome knoll if you happen to go to Floriade this year.
Next Thursday will mark the first of our new and improved coffee mornings. This will now
be held on the 1st Thursday of the month at Café Woodworks. This coffee morning will be
open to ALL parents of BPS whether Defence or not. The aim of this is to foster new
friendships with both Defence families and civilian families in the school community.
Please join us on the following mornings after the bell at 0910:

Thursday 13th October (note this is the first Thursday back after the school holidays)
