There’s an irony, i suppose, in a book about the future being the book that showed me the future. Comics is a funny business. The main attractor for me was the ability to just team up with an artist and make a book. That’s how i ran my own small press all those years ago, that’s how i started elk’s Run, my first true comics experience, that’s why i initially ran away from hollywood. and, it always served me well. so, as we see a resurgence in creator owned and driven comics, i come to realize that the future is the past.
The conversation that Joe and i had that started the process that led to this book was about passion. about how there comes a point in your career where, while you do care about the work you’re doing, you want to be passionate about it. You want it to once again go back to how it was in the beginning. Telling these stories is what we love. it’s what drives us. Certainly, paying the bills is a nice by-product, but, really it’s about the love and joy that creating a story to share with the world gives you.
and then there’s the other side of it: doing work that you’re passionate about imbues that work with something more than work done for hire, work done for calculating reasons. The BuNkeR is that for us.
When oni Press came to us about moving from our digital roots (which i suppose has its whole own future narrative that i’m ignoring) to the printed page,
the number one factor that Joe and i discussed was, “Where can we make our book with only loving, caring hands, devoted to seeing it through to our vision?” oni Press was that place.
and so, we begin again. This issue collects, or, more accurately, repurposes the first five digital chapters into a bit of a magnum opus for Joe. he literally drove himself mad with scraps of paper and split up panels and deranged file naming devices to create the story that you see here. i could not be prouder to have my name on it, but, the truth is that Joe is the true maestro here.
and, perhaps, that’s yet another part of the future. as more and more mainstream comics are produced by creators with limited contact, the truly great works are done by creators who share something more than sensibility. They have a bond of friendship and trust that they spend years building. Joe and i have that in spades. There’s never a conversation, no matter how
theoretically difficult, that we have that changes the respect and love we have for each other. (or, at least, that i have for him. he probably fucking hates me for all of the nudging and changes i demand.) and, so, you ask me what the future is, and i can tell you in no uncertain terms that the future, at least of comics, but probably of all art, is creators doing work that inspires them. Which sounds trite and simple, but, the fact remains, when art and commerce cross each other, it’s much, much harder than you’d think.
The conventional wisdom is to find something in the story that you love. That you can fixate on the thing you care about, and get through all the rest. This book (and i think if you were to ask anybody writing any of the big creator owned books, they’d say the same) is something that i love through and through. every part of the story and the characters profoundly mingle with my day-to-day life. every conversation i have, every book i read, every article i click on informs the story that you’re reading.
That’s a gift. For me.
so, for the next, hopefully, forever many months, you’ll get to see a bit of the future. That future isThe BuNkeR, and we couldn’t be happier to have you along for the ride.

“A Boy and a Girl is a wonderful sci-fi romantic comedy, but not necessarily in that order. If you like people and/or things, this is the book for you.”
– Ben Acker (Thrilling Adventure Hour, Drones)
Jamie S. Rich (You Have Killed Me, It Girl & the Atomics) and Natalie Nourigat (Between Gears, It Girl & the Atomics) weave the unique tale of two young people chasing romance across two nights in a sprawling futuristic city where technology rules all!
“I’ve been a huge fan of Jamie S. Rich’s writing since day one and am always crazy excited to see each new project. That excitement is multiplied as he joins Natalie Nourigat’s exploding artistic talents on A Boy and a Girl. This book is a beaut’! Incredibly clever and charming, it gets my highest recommendation!”
- Michael Allred (Madman, FF)
