Simple things we all know, perhaps from our youth. ● Members will need to provide their own instruments. Nongham Boat Trip

Friday 13th, by Di Ilingworth

What a date to choose for a river trip but the day dawned bright and

warm.

Twenty three members arose early to board two narrow boats {Yes two

this year} to navigate the beauful calm waters of the Trent.

On se1ng off, it was reported that

the river was rather low ,in fact our

helmsman a4er a li5le detour into

the reeds saw the bo5om and

quickly corrected his direcon.

Giving the following boat a laugh!

The bird spo5ers among us were

pleased to see so many different bird species, 23 Heron were counted

along the banks. Canada geese in flight and landing were an awesome

sight. But lots more birds were seen including Cormorants and

beauful Great Crested Grebes.

Two locks were navigated without

much mishap but an absent rope

on one of the boats caused two

agile members to traverse the roof

of their boat to find one. We

passed the entrance to No1ngham

Canals but skipper decided we

didn’t have enough me. So

connued on to a picnic lunch spot

on the steps by Trent Bridge.

A4er lunch we navigated back to Gunthorpe in good me.

So a big thank you goes to Reg Goodall for arranging a fabulous day

‘Messing about on the river’ and also Steve Arram our other Skipper.

A wonderful day on our lovely river was had by all

History Group Report by Steve Aram

A thought-provoking and entertaining talk by Bob Massey

Based on real events from No1nghamshire’s past.

He began by explaining that to really understand historical events we

must view them by the norms of that me. He went on to describe

numerous examples.

In 1267 two men walking in Sherwood Forest were arrested, imprisoned

and later forcibly released by a gang ( shades of the "men in green" ! )

At this me the forest was the exclusive property of the King.

In 1346 Richard Fletcher the Kings Armourer was reprieved for murder -

obviously the kings need of his services outweighed any other

consideraons.

Cannibalism is not associated with our civilised country yet in 1316

No1nghamshire saw people abducng and killing children, prison

inmates eang their fellows a4er months of famine when rats, dogs and

horses had been killed for their flesh.

For many life was short and brutal with hangings carried out for minor

offences such as poaching, begging without a licence or associang with

gypsies.

Public hanging was not only a deterrent but a source of entertainment.

The last public hanging in No1ngham was in 1864 when dozens of

spectators were crushed to death in the crowd leaving the venue.

At this point it was decided to carry out further execuons within the

prison on grounds of safety, not for good taste!

We were le4 feeling grateful to be living in todays enlightened mes.

Next Meeng: Tues 15th October @ 2-00 pm

Geology Group

Over the last few months the Geology group, with the help of Kathryn Houghton, have been looking at the links between Geology and other subjects. We have so far looked at Art, Music and Poetry and have discovered how it is involved in our everyday life in ways we never realised. In June we painted using different coloured soils. In September we even had a go at writing our own Geology based poetry in the form of acrostics, the two below use the geological words Volcanoes and Marble. In October we will look at Geology in the kitchen. V iolent destruc%on marks their birth, M ountains, quarried;

O verturning the seKled Earth; A ppenines, Carrara

L andscapes and seascapes quietly known R esounding, hec%c din,

For September read, October 2nd mee/ng:

Unnatural Causes: by Dr Richard Shepherd

Though;ul, revealing, chilling and always unputdownable, Unnatural

Causes is the true crime book of the year. If you liked This is Going to

Hurt, War Doctor and All That Remains you'll love this.

'One of the most fascinang books I have read in a long me.

Engrossing, a haunng page-turner. A book I could not put down' The

Times

DAILY MAIL 100 BEST SUMMER BOOKS

Meet the forensic pathologist, Dr Richard Shepherd. A detecve in his

own right, he must solve the mystery of sudden and unexplained

deaths. Unnatural Causes tells the story of not only the cases and

bodies that have haunted him the most, but also how to live a life

steeped in death.

For October read, November 6th mee/ng:

The Uninhabitable Earth: A Story of the Future by David Wallace-Wells

**SUNDAY TIMES AND THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER**

'If you read just one work of non-ficon this year, it should probably

be this ... what this book forces you to face is more important than any

other subject' David Sexton, Evening Standard

It is worse, much worse, than you think. However sanguine you might

be about the proposion that we have ravaged the natural world, which

we surely have, it is another thing enrely to consider the possibility

that we have only provoked it, engineering first in ignorance and then in

denial a climate system that will now go to war with us for many

centuries, perhaps unl it destroys us.

From the Commi0ee

Hi Members,

We have been aware for some me that, due to our consistently high

numbers at the Monthly Meengs, we need to try and find a way of

reorganising the Check in System at the door. This is not only to make

it more comfortable and prevent people from queuing outside, but to

ensure that we are complying with both Charity Commission

Legislaon and U3A Guidelines on Safety.

So, beginning at the October Monthly Meeng, we will set up the

Registraon Process in the Coffee Lounge . We will return to our use

of Alphabecal Lists where your name will be cked off on entry and

as you pay.

* PLEASE, have your MEMBERSHIP CARD with you *

Visitors will be given a TEMPORARY CARD allowing them their two

Taster Sessions and will be welcomed in the Foyer by our Membership

Secretary and Meeters and Greeters.

This will ensure that we comply with Health and Safety Direcves in

case of Emergencies and prevent the congeson at the Main Entrance

Bear with us in October as we iron out any wrinkles

* PLEASE, have your MEMBERSHIP CARD with you *

PROGRAMME

October 8th. - " Abstract Landscapes".

November 12th. - "People in the Landscape".

December10th - "Winter Landscapes"

The mee ngs will all be "all in together", or rather "all in

anyone who wants to" when anyone who has an interest in

the topic shows an example of their own. We find that

sessions like these provide a remarkable breadth of interest

with almost no duplica on of what is brought in . We call

these our "serendipity sessions" and they are usually fun as

well as interes ng and enlightening.

We are a friendly and welcoming group, most of us without

any special knowledge, but with a shared interest in looking

at art and learning from each other as we go along. No-one

needs any prior exper se to come along and join us. We all

pick it up as we go along . And don't worry if you think you

can't get to all the mee ngs, each of the sessions can be

enjoyed as a stand-alone

The venue is the bowls club. The me is 10 - 12a.m.

The day is the second Tuesday of each month.

BALLROOM DANCING GROUP

For most of us, the summer holidays are already a distant memory.

Whatever you have been doing, Mike and I hope you’ve all had a good

break. However, it’s now me to dust off your dance shoes and hit the

floor again to brush up on old ballroom skills. Perhaps you are an

absolute beginner and want to learn something new. Maybe you just

want to come along and join in the fun while keeping the mind and

body acve. It’s been well documented that dancing can help maintain

physical and mental fitness.

It doesn’t ma5er if you don’t

have a partner, we will

dance with you and there’s

usually someone to partner

up with. We have a break

for refreshments, (the

superior chocolate biscuits

always go down a treat!),

and there’s a plenty of

laughter along the way. So,

if you’ve a couple of hours

to spend one a4ernoon a

month, why not come along and join us at Coddington Village Hall

(please note the address!) on the fourth Thursday of the month from

2.30-4.30 pm.
