Non-Fic&on Book Group

While a great novel can be engaging, there's nothing quite like a true story.

Whether that story comes in the form of

repor9ng on science, architecture,

medicine, or poli9cs - or through

biographies, histories, self-help, etc., Non

-fic9on gives us the chance to look at,

and learn from, the world around us.

By selec9ng and discussing books

together, you can enjoy meaningful

conversa9ons while we share more

about ourselves with our each other.

Come join us! If you’re just now finding out about us (or didn’t read/finish this

month’s selec9on) – come anyway. You will no doubt have an opinion as the

conversa9on evolves!

We meet on the 1’st Wednesday of the month at

Carriages Café NG24 1BL (Castle Gate Sta9on) at 2:00

pm The group leader is Julea Merlin and is best

reached by e-mail: [email protected]

Telephone/Text phone number is 07932 385672. No

need to call ahead, you can just show up!

May 1’st mee&ng at 2:00pm

we will be discussing “McCarthy’s Bar” by Pete McCarthy.

For May reading/June Mee9ng:

Margot Lee Sheerly - “Hidden

Figures”

Out and About Group

We set off with a full bus at 8.30 am on our way to Cheltenham Racecourse

Railway sta9on . The weather was not very promising with rain and dull cloudy

condi9ons most of the way . We stopped for tea at Evesham at a Blue

Diamond Garden centre with associated shopping village , which was almost

worth a bus trip In itself.

We arrived at the racecourse in good 9me and boarded the train at about 12

noon . We had coach C to ourselves - 50 plus of us . The

bus leK us to pick us up later in Broadway . The train

journey was very prey going through the heart of the

Cotswolds . On arriving in Broadway with brightening

weather our bus took about 4 people to

the Broadway Tower , a folly built to enjoy

the fabulous view up there. The rest of us explored Broadway a

prey and celebrated Cotswold village. At 4 pm it was 9me to

board the bus and make our way home. We used the old fosse

way, again through the heart of the Cotswolds villages on the

limestone escarpment with the honey coloured houses and farm

buildings which is the trademark of this beau9ful area.

See more pictures on back page

Join us for the trip to Wells Next the Sea on the Friday 7th June 2019. I’ve laid

on a second bus so no one need miss the trip. Imagine —— half a doz

Brancaster Oysters or poed wells crab , with a glass of sharp white Pinot

Grigio to compliment ( Golden Fleece On the Quayside ) .

History Group This was an illustrated talk on the Fall of Saxon England ( Xmas 1065 to

Xmas 1066 ) given by Mike Kelley .It was a " warts and all " version of a

most crucial year in Englands history . Beginning with the death of Edward

the confessor and ending with the corona9on of Duke William of

Normandy.

Edward died childless and his successor King Harold was duly chosen by

the Witan as King .Meanwhile , Vikings were massing in the North and

were eventually defeated near

York .At the same 9me William led an Invasion force in the South causing

the Saxon army to

rapidly deploy to meet the

threat .Although Harold had ini9al success the bale was eventually lost,

Harold was killed and England began a new era under the Norman yoke.

Mike gave a wealth of detail on the mo9va9on of the many characters

and also the treachery and double-dealing involved making an extremely

interes9ng and informa9ve session .

Next mee9ng : Tues 14 May 2019

Speaker : Chris Weir , NoXnghamshire Heritage

Steve Aram .

The next mee9ng is on Tuesday 9th April at 10am at Newark Bowls

Cra@ Group

At our March mee9ng seven of the group enjoyed a session of Chinese pain9ng

led by Reg Robinson (his second visit). Reg reminded us of the principles, tools

and materials and we had a go at some basic techniques. We then tried our

hand at pain9ng fish and finally simple birds. The process is very calming and

you could have heard a pin drop! The others spent the 9me with Janet

Robinson making really arac9ve scented hangings. All in all an interes9ng and

worthwhile way to spend a Monday morning! Thank you to Reg and Janet.

The Mah Jong group held their annual prize giving at the April mee9ng, when

we rewarded the players who have gained the highest scores during the past

year.

```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
To show you what a diverse game Mah Jong is,
take a look at the scores. The prize for the
High Game score went to Pat Woods with a
phenominal score of 8086. Well done Pat. The
winds and draggons were definately in your
favour that day. In second place was Di
Illingworth with a respectable score of 3060.
(Sadly Di was not with us to receive her giK)
Sue Legge and Sheila Harris took joint 3rd
place both with a score of 1740. AKer gaining
her high
score in September Di then followed it with
the lowest score of 2, in December. This
gained her the 'Booby' prize which she
shared with Sonya, who also had a score of
2 on 2 occasions.
If you feel you would like to have a go at
playing Mah Jong, do come and join us on
the first Wednesday of the month.
