No records directly link to Samuel; however, given the number of early “unassigned” Collinses in the Burin area, it is highly likely that he, along with William, was a founder of this Collins line. Population 1850

    --Lovell’s 1871 Provincial Business Directory

Burin has a long history of settlement. It was first used as a port for Basque fishermen in the 1650s and as a harbour for the British

navy in 1675. The first sign of permanent settlement came in the 1710s, when Christopher Spurrier & Co of Poole, Dorset,

established a ship building firm there. By 1749, there were 266 permanent, year-round residents. Whether the Collins family had

settled by then isn’t known; however, the records show that the first Collins settlers in Burin appear to have been William and

Samuel Collins, born 1747 and 1748, respectively. Without further records, it’s difficult to know whether they were actually born in

Burin or, like many residents of Burin at the time, had been recruited from the British Isles by Spurrier’s to work in the fishery there.

No records directly link to Samuel; however, given the number of early “unassigned” Collinses in the Burin area, it is highly likely that

he, along with William, was a founder of this Collins line.

1 “Community” is the individual’s principal place of residence. It is usually, though not always, where the individual was born, lived, died.2 John was living in Jean de Bay in 1820 and was the father of an infant. This is just a wild guess that he was about 27 at the time.

Question: Did he have an infant son/child named Edwardwho died in 1874? Excerpt from the diary of WilliamHarding: “1874 Dec 13 - SundayArose 7 a.m. Hard, frosty morning. Attended service. However, Edward and Esther Collins of CollinsCove also had a son Edward, born 1843, who would havebeen 31 at the time; it seems unlikely that Harding wouldhave spoken of a mature adult as Ed Collins’s son Edward;he would have named him on his own.

    Edgar(Edward)and Lucy

Born 20 Dec 1874 at Davis Island; baptized 2 Jul 1875 atFortune. Married Lily A. Turner on 21 Nov 1898 at St.John’s; she was 30, he was 24. Witnesses were Selby Joyceand Alice Kelly. Lily was baptized Lily Ann Turner at LowerIsland Cove on 23 Mar 1868 at the age of 6 months, thedaughter of John and Elizabeth Turner; therefore, she wasborn around Sep 1867. The couple had a daughterGeorgina, who married Robie Demont at Halifax, NovaScotia, on 2 Apr 1925. (Birth record incorrectly statesWilliam Thomas was born at Dariss Island and was the sonof Edgar and Lucy. This was meant to be Davis Island and, Ibelieve, the son of Edward and Lucy. His marriagecertificate states he was born on Flat Islands.)
